In 1812 the U.S. started a war of aggression with its neighboring country to the north.
(From an article in the American Heritage magazine, Fall 2026 issue.)
“The acquisition of Canada this year, as far as the neighborhood of Quebec, will be a mere matter of marching,” wrote Thomas Jefferson soon after war was declared.
Henry Clay, assured Congress that “the militia of Kentucky are alone [able] to place Montreal and Upper Canada at your feet.”
British forces freed as many as 6,000 black U.S. slaves during the War of 1812.

PENYRHEOL: ‘The Punch’ Colin Jones painted on the wall of his old boxing club
A giant portrait of boxing great Colin Jones has gone up on the wall of Penyrheol Boxing Club, the club he boxed for as an amateur.
It is the latest community mural by artist Steve Jenkins, who paints as Jenks.
The black and white portrait shows Jones mid-punch in red gloves and red shorts with “Colin” on the leg, against a packed arena under the lights.
Jenks shared photos of the finished wall on Facebook, writing: “This one is celebrating another local sporting legend, Colin Jones MBE.”
He said he’d had “a great time squeezing this one in during dry weather this week”, and that he had “some inside bits to do in the gym next”.

Jones was born in Gorseinon in 1959 and learned his boxing at Penyrheol ABC.
He was 17 when he boxed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, the youngest British boxer at the Games, according to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
As a professional under manager Eddie Thomas, he won the British welterweight title in April 1980 by stopping Kirkland Laing at Wembley.
Commonwealth and European titles followed, the European belt won by stopping Hans Henrik Palm in Copenhagen.
In 1983 he fought Milton McCrory for the vacant WBC world title, drawing the first fight and losing the rematch on a split decision.
His third world title fight, against Don Curry in Birmingham in 1985, was stopped in the fourth round on cuts. He finished with 26 wins from 30 professional fights, 23 of them inside the distance.

Jenks: the artist behind murals from Pontyates to Port Talbot
Jenks started out painting NHS tribute murals while furloughed from a factory job during lockdown, and went full-time as the requests kept coming.
He told Swansea Bay News that story in June, when he finished the Pontyates village mural, a wall packed with ideas from the village’s schoolchildren that he called his “gift to the community”. Among the pupils’ picks was EastEnders’ Dot Cotton, because actress June Brown was evacuated to Pontyates during the Second World War.
His other work includes a five-panel seafront mural in his home town of Llanelli, which he paid for himself, and a tribute in Port Talbot to Meyrick Sheen, the late father of actor Michael Sheen.
Back in 2023, he worked with pupils at Tŷ Trafle School in Gowerton to turn their own designs into a graffiti mural on the school wall.
Not every wall has lasted: his Brunel mural in Briton Ferry was painted over in July after the building’s owner objected.
For the Penyrheol wall, Jenks thanked councillors Andrew Stevens, Jan Curtice and Nicola Matthews “and of course Colin”.

New from Knostic Research: Where AI Vulnerability Discovery Harnesses Go Quiet: Structural False Negatives and Hidden Vulnerabilities
AI vulnerability discovery harnesses can miss real, reachable vulnerabilities because of how the surrounding software is built, and how potentially, this can also be used by an attacker to hide vulnerabilities in plain sight.
This study began while hardening two harnesses I help maintain, Knostic's own OpenAnt, and raptor. We then conducted an exploratory survey by feeding known vulnerabilities to harnesses, analyzed the root causes of the misses, and used the data to run a cross-sectional survey of 10 other harnesses.
The paper aims to share these findings with the community and, hopefully, spark a broader discussion of the engineering challenges and threats involved with harness engineering, in cyber security, and beyond.
A common pattern is that descriptive rules become prescriptive. Assumptions about typical file extensions, function names, entry points, or model responses become filters that determine what gets analyzed.
This is similar to work such as from Thomas Ptacek and Timothy Newsham's "Insertion, Evasion, and Denial of Service: Eluding Network Intrusion Detection", all the way back in 1998.

CODEINE (US)
OCCII, Saturday, May 15 at 08:30 PM GMT+2
CODEINE (US, Numero Group)
+ support
Early slowcore pioneers | “Leve Codeine, leve de traagheid”Tickets on sale on Friday, October 23rd, 10h.
After a brief European tour in 2023 (including sold-out shows in London and Paris), and more recent performances in South America and Japan, 90’s band Codeine returns to play a dozen shows in support of their lost album Dessau, recorded in 1992 but recently(ish) released by the archival label Numero Group, along with remastered vinyl of their original Sub Pop/Glitterhouse records.
With the release of Frigid Stars LP (1990), Codeine almost single-handedly invented what would later become known as “slowcore.” Predating influential albums by kindred spirits Low and Duster by half a decade, Codeine’s slow, graceful songs support lyrics that are a disturbingly gentle embodiment of depression and disassociation.
Codeine – D (HD Visualizer)ABOUT DESSAU
Recorded June 1992 at Harold Dessau Recording studio in New York City with founding drummer/guitarist Chris Brokaw, Dessau consists of alternate versions of songs later re-recorded for their Barely Real EP and The White Birch, the latter with drummer Doug Scharin (Rex/June of 44). Numero Group resurrected the Dessau recordings, now released with the original planned artwork: a turbulent blue-green painting by American tonalist Thomas Wilmer Dewing.“Dessau arguably stands as the best of Codeine’s three albums, a perfect snapshot of the existential anxiety that can arrive in one’s late 20s, when adolescence fades far into the rearview, but the future is closing in fast.” –Grayson Haver Currin/Bandcamp
PERSONAL QUOTE
“I was very reluctant to play again, afraid to breathe life into these songs again. But talking to people who hadn’t seen the band back then and to whom the music means a lot has absolutely changed my mind, not just about playing but also about what music is actually for. And we’ve been honored by the response to our shows, with even people singing along! So I want to bring that new focus and understanding to these shows now.”
–Stephen Immerwahr“Listen to Stephen Immerwahr’s dour poetry, John Engle’s tolling guitars, and Chris Brokaw’s glacial drumming, and picture falling snow. The sound, which typified the slowcore indie-rock sub-genre, is so chilling, precise, and beguilingly extreme — shy, then crashing — that it recalibrates the vast spaces around each inquisitive note. It becomes an exploration of tone and tension, and a desolate meditation.” – The New Yorker USA 2023
– Dansende Beren BEL 2023“Codeine has some antecedents, from Pink Floyd and Neil Young — Mr. Immerwahr shares his high-tenor register — to the arty post-punk of bands like MX-80, but it forged its own sound. Its songs start out quiet and sparse, only to gather volume and gravity, crashing and tolling, yet somehow staying austere, even diffident. They crest and then fall away, often with a lingering instrumental coda, ending up no more fulfilled than they were as they began. The music was grunge’s withdrawn, desolate cousin. The era’s preferred suffix was “-core,” so Codeine was tagged “slowcore” and “sadcore,” mini-genres that would be continued by bands like Low and Red House Painters after Codeine disbanded.”
– New York Times USA 2012“Codeine’s deliberate pace suited songs freighted with Immerwahr’s angst. “My emotional state, my disassociation from others, was the core of it,” he admits. But this music was emotional without the histrionics of grunge. “It was a reaction to that Eddie Vedder style of singing. What suited these songs, my own lived experience, was something smaller, something anti-epic.” Possessed of a simmering power, their 1990 debut album Frigid Stars LP was championed in the UK by John Peel.”
– The Guardian UK 2023Presale/door prices adjusted: our events are set up by volunteers in favour of supporting DIY touring acts, but it is getting ever more risky to plan and book events – please support the community and buy your tickets early! Presale closes 18.00 on day of the show.

🧿𝑳𝒐𝒔 𝒛𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒅𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒈 𝑵𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆 🧿

-------------------------------------------------TITLE: New biological marker could end trial and error in depression care
URL: https://www.psypost.org/blood-test-could-predict-if-an-antidepressant-will-work-for-you/
Major depressive disorder is often treated through trial and error, but a blood test may soon help doctors choose the right medication on the first try. Researchers have identified a circular RNA molecule in the blood that predicts whether a patient will respond to a common class of antidepressants. The findings were published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Millions of people globally experience major depressive disorder. Doctors frequently prescribe selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, commonly known as SSRIs, as a first line of medical defense. These drugs block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, leaving more of the chemical available to help transmit messages between nerve cells.
Less than half of patients experience relief from their symptoms after trying their first prescribed antidepressant. This forces patients to spend months trying different medications before finding one that works. The prolonged wait imposes a heavy burden on individuals and adds substantial costs to the healthcare system.
Medical professionals currently lack biological tests to predict which drug will work for a specific person. Genetic tests exist to show how fast a person’s body might metabolize a drug. They cannot, however, forecast if the drug will actually relieve depression symptoms.
To find a better biological indicator, a team of researchers investigated circular RNAs. These are stable, loop-shaped genetic molecules that influence how other genes operate. Because they lack exposed ends, they resist degrading enzymes in the body, giving them a much longer lifespan than standard linear RNA molecules.
Circular RNAs are highly concentrated in the brain and help regulate how neurons connect and communicate. Some of these molecules can pass through the blood-brain barrier, the semi-permeable membrane that separates circulating blood from brain fluid. Because they leak into the bloodstream in a stable form, researchers can detect brain-derived circular RNAs using a standard blood draw.
The investigation was led by scientists Grigorios Papageorgiou, Eleni T. Tzavara, and Nikolaos Mellios of Circular Genomics and various research institutes in the United States and France, along with Madhukar H. Trivedi at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. They focused on a specific circular RNA called CDR1as. This molecule is highly abundant in the brain but rarely found in other human tissues.
The researchers first analyzed baseline blood samples from patients enrolled in two independent clinical trials. They extracted RNA from the blood of patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder who were about to begin taking the SSRI sertraline. Using a technique that amplifies genetic material, the team measured the starting levels of CDR1as for each patient.
The team found that patients who did not respond to sertraline after eight weeks of treatment had notably higher baseline levels of CDR1as in their blood. Patients who experienced symptom relief had lower starting levels of the molecule. The researchers observed that unaffected control subjects also showed lower baseline levels of the molecule.
Taking advantage of the clinical trial design, the researchers also measured the patients’ blood at different intervals after they started taking sertraline. They discovered that patients who responded well to the drug experienced an increase in CDR1as levels after treatment began. Patients who did not respond to the medication saw no such increase in the molecule’s concentration.
To test if this molecule simply predicts general improvement rather than specific drug responses, the researchers looked at other treatment groups. They measured baseline blood levels in patients who were given a placebo pill. They also evaluated patients who failed to respond to sertraline and were subsequently switched to bupropion, a different type of antidepressant.
Baseline levels of CDR1as did not predict whether a patient would feel better on a placebo. The molecule also failed to predict if a patient would go on to experience remission while taking bupropion. This suggested the biomarker is specifically tied to the mechanisms of sertraline.
The research team then wanted to know if this predictive power applied to the entire SSRI drug class. They examined blood samples from patients in other clinical programs who were taking fluoxetine, citalopram, or escitalopram. They also analyzed samples from a small study of patients taking alternative medications like serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.
The researchers observed that CDR1as levels successfully identified patients who were faring well on various SSRIs, not just sertraline. When evaluating patients taking other classes of antidepressants, the molecule’s levels did not predict symptom relief. This pointed to a specific relationship between the circular RNA and SSRI medications as a whole.
To understand exactly how the brain produces this circular RNA, the team conducted experiments on mice. They administered different chemical compounds to the animals to block specific brain receptors. They then extracted brain tissue to measure changes in Cdr1as, the mouse equivalent of the human molecule.
When the researchers blocked the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, levels of the circular RNA dropped across three different regions of the mouse brain. Blocking dopamine or glutamate receptors did not produce a similar drop in the molecule. This established a direct link between serotonin system activity and the production of the circular RNA.
The investigators conducted a final set of experiments on lab-grown human and mouse nerve cells. They treated the cells with chemicals that inhibit brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that promotes the survival and growth of neurons. Inhibiting this protein’s receptors caused the cells to produce less of the circular RNA.
The researchers noted that certain medical conditions could interfere with the accuracy of this blood test. For instance, the test performed poorly in depressed patients who had a family history of mania, which is often a sign of undiagnosed bipolar disorder. When the researchers excluded these patients from their analysis, the test’s predictive accuracy improved.
Medical events that disrupt the blood-brain barrier might also artificially alter the amount of circular RNA in the bloodstream. Severe head trauma or strokes could potentially cause these brain molecules to leak into the blood at abnormal rates. Future research will need to verify how such physical injuries influence the test results.
The study authors noted that high baseline levels of the molecule correlated with specific depression symptoms like anhedonia and social withdrawal. These symptoms are often associated with a subtype of depression that is historically harder to treat with SSRIs. Further studies will need to explore exactly how this biological marker overlaps with different clinical subtypes of the disorder.
The study, “A brain-enriched circRNA blood biomarker can predict response to SSRI antidepressants,” was authored by Grigorios Papageorgiou, El Chérif Ibrahim, Victor Gorgievski, Gabriella Maxson, Evelyn Lozano, Eric Gordon, Antoine Lefrere, Marie-Julie Toupet, Philippe Courtet, Raoul Belzeaux, Jane Foster, Thomas Carmody, Roy H. Perlis, Madhukar H. Trivedi, Eleni T. Tzavara, and Nikolaos Mellios.

Atkinson ends up 36 not out, and England thanks to a last wicket stand end with 241 all out from 46.4 overs. If I did not know better than to make predictions about Pakistan cricket teams I would say they were nailed on to win.

Century up for Ben Duckett, his fifth in ODIs, and it is come from 104 balls with 10 fours and two sixes, and he has done it on a day when the rest of the England top order have all failed, as shown by an England score of 178-6 in the 35th over.
#cricket #ODI #ODITriSeries #EnglandvPakistan #ENGvPAK -
Leading edge back to the bowler (Razaullah) and Jacks goes for 13 to make it 175-6 in the 34th over. It is Razaullah's first ODI scalp. Duckett is still there on 98, and is joined by Liam Dawson.
#cricket #ODI #ODITriSeries #EnglandvPakistan #ENGvPAK -
Jordan Cox walks open eyed straight into one of the more obvious traps ever set in international cricket. He goes caught by Babar Azam off Haris Rauf for 6 and England crash to 52-4 in the tenth over. They have strengthened their bowling after failing to defend 429 against Sri Lanka last time out, which means that S Curran is in at number six, which looks quite high for him at this level.
#cricket #ODI #ODITriSeries #EnglandvPakistan -
It goes from bad to worse for England. Brook has been run out coming back for a second making England 19-3 after five overs. Brook gone for 1.
#cricket #ODI #ODITriSeries #EnglandvPakistan -
England have made a dreadful start to today's must win match in the #ODITRiSeries - after four overs they are 18-2.

#24 Demon Knight (1994)
A murderer's row of character actors, apparently this script went through like six great horror directors before it landed with Ernest Dickerson, best known as Spike Lee's cinematographer, and you can tell it lost a little budget and prestige every time. It's not terrible, but I think it has found redemption mostly because of how bad Bordello of Blood turned out two years later.

A last extended ride before the clock switches back from summer to winter time.
Late autumn was in the air: the sunshine gave little warmth, and the rain was certainly cold.
When I came home there was still sufficient daylight for servicing the bike: I swapped the sprocket (the chain is again at > 0.05mm wear), and changed the inner cable of the derailleur.
Tomorrow, the weather forecast has "rain from night to late afternoon". Let's see.

🏴 Henry aus dem Antifa-Ost Verfahren ist gestorben! 🏴

I've just updated my post about why I have exited the tech industry and what I'm doing now. For those who haven't seen it, you may be interested in my experiences with trying to find a job in the current job market. For those who have, I've added some information about how my first season went with the new business.
