Book Review: Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
Author: Terry Pratchett
Title: Guards! Guards!
Publication Info: Gollancz, 1989
Summary/Review:In the first installment of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch series of Discworld novels, the tall human raised by dwarfs Carrot joins as a new recruit. Carrot is very literal and by the book, but his arrival brings a new sense of idealism to the corrupted Night Watch lead by Sam Vimes. At this time a secret monastic order is plotting to overthrow the Patrician who governs Ankh-Morpork by summoning a dragon and then have their puppet slay the dragon and become king. Things go awry when the dragon burns down wide swathes of the city and declares itself king instead. In this hilarious and clever story, the Night Watch – and their tiny dragon mascot Erroll – have to summon the heroism to save the city.

The mission was hella fun. I added a stop for snack shopping and then the longer shore leave was a picnic in the Alewife Brook Reservation, which was a great place to stop and hang out and be in nature with a bunch of weird bike freaks. There was also a stop in Davis to make a small shrine to pTerry; at some point I need to replace the framed photo with something more weather-durable. We ended up with seven children on the mission which was rad as hell.

"The singers all loathe the sight of one another, the chorus despises the singers, they both hate the orchestra, and everyone fears the conductor; the staff on one prompt side won't talk to the staff on the opposite prompt side, the dancers are all crazed from hunger in any case..."
Terry Pratchett, Maskerade

It was funny how people were people everywhere you went, even if the people concerned weren't the people the people who made up the phrase "people are people everywhere" had traditionally thought of as people. And even if you weren't virtuous, as you had been brought up to understand the term, you did like to see virtue in other people, provided it didn?t cost you anything.

Mr 11: "I've read a few fantasy books. I've really enjoyed the RimWorld books I've read."
Me: "Oh no. Where did you get RimWorld novels?"
Mr 11: "Uh... You look worried. Is there something wrong with Pratchett's novels?"
Me: "Oh!! *sighs in relief* No, the DiscWorld novels are great. I'm so glad you're enjoying them!"
Mr 11: "Yeah! DiscWorld, that's it! What did I say?"

Book 15. Going Postal by Terry Pratchett.
Back on the pratchett. This book feels very timely because it's all about an invention (the clacks) being run into the ground by profit-seeking vultures who kicked out the engineers and don't understand their technology.
In this world, Vetinari can just deploy con man Moist von Lipwig to solve the problem by rejuvenating the post-office. In ours, we need more action.
My next pratchett will probably be Making Money
