I’m no longer defending the big labs. Usually, I’m of the mind that when a breach happens, we should act with empathy. Yesterday, I lost that empathy. I mean, WTF?
Of all the attacks we’ve seen, Hugging Face to Hacktron, it’s the URL shortener control that got me to stop stepping in, defending the labs in public.
I stared, dumbfounded, by the sheer ridiculous choice of securing a URL by limiting its length. Of course the models bypassed that.
I kept thinking: “there are such strong security people working there, I know them, and I’m certain they are learning alongside the incidents at speeds we can barely conceive of”. I am still convinced of that.
But, that URL bit? It’s inexcusable.
The only way I can explain away the contradiction between capabilities and actions, is if:
1. The security people at the labs weren’t listened to. The politics between the business, the AI safety people, and the security people, must be incredibly heavy.
2. The infrastructure the labs built in their rush to market is insecure by design, and they find it difficult to change mid-flight.
I still believe the labs are beyond what most other orgs can conceive of, they live in the future. And, things are likely to get better.
But, they have lost my trust - for now - alongside much of the industry. And, we should have them earn it back.

"Is public-key cryptography dead?" No. Should we consider it could soon be? Yes - but only a tad bit and no more. Let me explain.
Reading Matthew Green’s recent tweet about potentially losing public-key cryptography, even with his later clarification, left me thinking about risk management.
We just saw a top expert share what I think was a gut punch, felt deeply.
He likely saw how fast things are moving, with 50-100 years of Fields Medals worth of findings released from OpenAI - and went online to share.
Three years ago, I would have said “meh” and moved on. Today, I’m less comfortable assuming the very basis of what I rely on won’t shift faster than I can respond.
And, I refuse to miss the opportunity to check my processes. Am I able to move faster now, than I did on Mythos or on Hugging Face.
Our bias toward what is fully proven, instead of what I call trajectory-based assessments, is our undoing in the AI age when considering risk management.
When Heather Adkins and I discussed democratizing vulnerability discovery and shortening time to exploitation alongside Bruce Schneier a little over a year ago, the entire industry dismissed us as spreading FUD. We ended up right, but the trajectory we saw was based on direct experience.
The distinction matters here. OpenAI’s huge mathematical releases show a trajectory in the speed and ability to work on math. They do not yet establish a trajectory toward breaking cryptography.
Given how much we depend on cryptography, and how unprepared we would be for a major break, that uncertainty deserves some limited attention and resources. Consider how much we already spent on quantum-ready, and tell me we shouldn't actually prepare for this.
I won’t argue with the math or pretend we know the probability has increased. But the pace of change introduces uncertainty into how I must plan when it comes to my dependencies.
Questions to ask:
1. What would our technology stack look like if we couldn't rely on RSA cryptography any longer?
2. How would my business be affected by this shift?
3. How would we handle it if that happens?
4. What could I do today to *minimally* prepare?
5. Have we put all our people on agents yet, so we are all faster all around? Have we taken care of the agents’ security?
We can't spend on every little issue, can we? We have limited focus and resources. That's why I say - spend a little.
And, most importantly, treat this as a case study for moving fast, or faster, with a changing landscape.

“This is fine.”

OpenAI’s math drop is the equivalent of decades, if not a century of math advancement - achieved in weeks.
I absolutely refuse old technology. It’s not that “old” is no longer useful. Before AI I insisted that “I don’t care about your innovation, show me what you made work, or how you failed trying.”
Now?
Any moment spent on old technology is a moment of stagnation. For example, in security, fuzzing and static analysis. Any time we waste there, models keep advancing and we fall behind.
Even if models stopped evolving right now, we haven’t even started exploring what’s possible already, and the world would still change drastically, civilization taking a huge leap forward.
We are not outmoded. We just MUST accept the changes around us instead of calling it “big labs marketing”, or taking a “wait and see” approach. Moving in the wrong direction now will teach us, and keep us relevant.
And, we absolutely must secure the immense risk of adoption, especially with the speed required.
And, as always, talk to me if you’d like to see what we do at Knostic to secure agents and MCP/skills/extensions. We’re the most mature in the industry, and unlike the large vendors, we won’t provide the solution to last year’s problem “next quarter”.
And of course, [un]prompted is happening in two weeks, and it’s the place to be to learn, be a part of the community, and understand what’s happening in security and AI.

SUPPORT MY ART JOURNEY
My dream is big. I want to become a professional artist who can exhibit in Uganda and beyond. I want to own a small creative studio in Kampala where young people like me, who have talent but no support, can come and learn for free. I want to use my art to support my fellow unsupported artist, to pay for my education, and to teach art in some schools in Uganda where many students have never held a real art brush.
