Clinical Arsenal earn precious win against Everton thanks to Konsa and Gabriel
By Ed Aarons at the Emirates StadiumThe wait goes on for David Moyes. The Scot must have been hoping that, on his 14th visit to this stadium as Everton’s manager, his luck would finally change. Yet from the moment Ezri Konsa slammed home his first goal for Arsenal as the Premier League champions rediscovered their knack of scoring from set pieces, the writing was on the wall for Moyes against his former captain, Mikel Arteta.

Who owns your phone, when you buy a new one? Easy answer would be: the person who bought the phone. But that's not completely true.
In UK we see that people who bought a new iPhone had to verify their age using their ID card to get unrestricted access to the device as David Bombal explains in this short.
We see that baselines are shifting, slowly. Once we are used to it, the next step is about to follow. Today it's age verification. C'mon, it doesn't hurt. It's done very quick, you only need your ID, once....
But what's next? The digital wallet is just around the corner. It will make everything so much easier, for everyone – including those who want to monitor us.

Economist Says Philippines Has Crossed into Stagflation
As far as one economist is concerned, the Philippines has crossed into stagflation pointing to factors like domestic government spending reductions, soaring costs of food, high price of oil and more, according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…
The Philippines has crossed the line from a standard cyclical slowdown into genuine stagflation, driven by global energy price shocks, domestic government spending cuts, and soaring food costs, according to a regional economist.
Speaking at “CFME Talks Macro Outlook: Global, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines” briefing hosted by Center for Financial and Monetary Economics (CFME) on Wednesday, Oct. 21, David G. Fernandez, senior fellow at CFME and visiting professor at Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED), warned that consensus growth forecasts for 2026 have plummeted from more than five percent to around 3.2 percent.
When asked what markers signal the shift to genuine stagflation, Fernandez said: “Well, I think that we’ve crossed the line. The revisions indicate that that’s what markets are expecting.”
He added that near-term growth could fall below already lowered forecasts while inflation could exceed expectations, emphasizing that this outlook “has to do with—not [the] fault of the Philippines—but the oil prices and potentially significantly higher food prices.”
“Growth could even be below the lowered forecasts and that inflation could be even higher than the higher forecasts that people have,” Fernandez added. “I worry about is that the optimism or the consensus forecast that we get back to five percent growth and you see inflation come down could be too optimistic themselves.”
Stagflation is generally understood as the simultaneous occurrence of elevated inflation, stagnant economic growth, and high unemployment, although economists do not have universally accepted numerical thresholds for determining when an economy has entered such a period.
In his presentation, Fernandez said inflation projections have shifted sharply upward, from an initial 2.6 percent toward six percent, with headline consumer price index (CPI) inflation already reaching 7.2 percent.
He described the country’s near-term trajectory as an extreme stagflation story, with forecast revisions becoming increasingly severe and the Philippines remaining firmly “under the radar” for international investors.
The economic slowdown was reflected in second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth, which fell to a post-pandemic low of 2.3 percent.
Fernandez cautioned that growth was cushioned by inventory stockpiling and a doubling of government fuel subsidies even as underlying domestic demand weakened.
He said public investment plunged by nearly 14 percent following public sector retrenchment linked to the flood control scandal, while private consumption growth dropped below three percent as family incomes were eroded by rising transport and food costs.
Fernandez said it remained very difficult to build a narrative for a strong recovery. While growth may have reached its floor, he projected that any subsequent rebound would remain shallow and well below the economy’s six-percent potential trend growth.
Compounding the energy crisis, he said, is a rapid acceleration of second-round effects, with businesses passing higher input costs on to consumers faster than in previous shock cycles.
Headline inflation reached 7.2 percent in both April and September, with Fernandez pointing to rice prices surging by more than 20 percent and transport costs climbing nearly 15 percent.
He also flagged the possibility of a “Godzilla El Niño” pushing food prices even higher, warning that consumers and policymakers may have to endure headline inflation hovering around seven percent for an extended period.
Meanwhile, Fernandez said the widening economic fallout has pushed the Philippines’ current account deficit forecast to more than four percent of GDP, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to imported energy shocks.
Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the economist is correct that the Philippines has crossed over into stagflation? Do you think there is nothing the national government can do to lower the prices of oil, fuel and other things that are essential for Filipinos? Do you think the national economy will fall into a recession by early 2028?

Depeche Mode, Music For The Masses, 1987 on Mute / Sire
Depeche Mode's sixth full length album and the follow up to Black Celebration, Music For The Masses was the first album where Alan Wilder took ownership of a lot of the production, though David Bascombe and Daniel Miller (of Mute) also get producer credit. It would be their last studio album of the 1980s, with Violator coming out in 1990. It concludes with an instrumental hidden track (on vinyl as well) at the end of Pimpf which has come to be called "Interlude #1 (Mission Impossible)." Everywhere you turn in Florence there's a lion.
1. One of the Medici Lions. Originally placed at the Villa Medici in Rome, now guarding the statues in Piazza Della Signoria. This is the Vacca lion created between 1570-90 to accompany the 2nd century Fancelli lion. In the backgroud you see the copy of the David statue, replacing the original when moved inside the Accademia.

Antonino X The Motels – Suddenly Last Summer (Bitty Summer Beats Mix) MUSIC DOWNLOAD
Found Objects celebrates the return of the remix and the art of sampling (as in found audio).
Australian audio artist and Cream magazine editor Antonino Tati trawls the internet to find cool soundbytes that he then layers over alternative mixes of great songs.
The Ultimate Eurythmics Archives calls it “a series of imaginative audio collages that feel part remix, part radio drama, and part pop culture time capsule,” while the series has also been acknowledged by the David Bowie fan site maggioreonbowie.com and other music sites.
Each day a new track is added, building up to a compilation of songs that go beyond the normal parameters of music mixing.
And each track is an awesome head trip. Good to show off on the playlist. The music featured is varied, with Volume 02 containing mixes of songs by Soulwax, Kate Bush, David Bowie, R.E.M., Tori Amos, Air, Lily Allen, Taylor Swift, Malcolm McLaren, and more.
Today’s addition is a classic from The Motels, Suddenly Last Summer. The song was actually inspired by the film of the same name, which starred Elizabeth Taylor in a holiday romance/drama. So naturally elements of the film have gone into this new version – dialogue from Taylor herself, along with over-the-top trailers for the movie.
Slip on a pair of earbuds or ‘phones and be transported into worlds of aural delight and mad sonic adventure. A musical universe where cool beats are paired with vintage educational fodder, insane radio ads of the 1950s, and classic film quotes.

Hubble and Webb find that far-out #solarsystem objects 'remember' the past
Used #NASA's Hubble & #JWST to study some trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Unexpectedly found fewer small TNOs than expected and that the colors of these bodies followed the same relationships as those of their larger family members.
"These dynamically 'hot' TNOs retain a signature of where they were born, even though they've been orbitally scrambled since then," said co-author David Trilling

From Fair Vote Canada
BC Conservatives receive 69% of the seats with 48% of the vote. BC voters cheated by first-past-the-post and pushed further towards a two-party system.
Only 48% of BC voters supported the BC Conservatives, yet the voting system has handed Lorne Doerkson's Conservatives 69% of the seats and 100% of the power.
The election results did not reflect what voters said with their ballots:
The BC Conservatives got 69% of the seats with 48% of the vote.
The BC NDP got 29% of the seats with 38% of the vote.
The BC Greens got 2% of the seats with 11% of the votes, electing only 2 MLAs to represent their voters.
CentreBC got no seats with 1.6% of the votesFirst-past-the-post is to blame for giving former Premier David Eby the incentive to waste millions of dollars on an unnecessary, opportunistic snap election.
While the political right was temporarily split into several competitive parties, Eby saw an opportunity to sail to another majority govt w a minority vote.

The Brain Is Not Designed for Thinking
“As the cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham has written: ‘Contrary to popular belief, the brain is not designed for thinking. It’s designed to save you from having to think.’ Because the brain is naturally inclined to avoid effortful thinking and to rely instead on familiar patterns, complete freedom tends to lead to unoriginal ideas, simply repeating what is known. Constraints push the brain beyond its default tendencies, forcing it to engage in deeper problem-solving. Total freedom, then, is the enemy of creativity, and constraint its companion.” — David Epstein, Inside the Box

Sunday Morning Reading
Writing a blog is an interesting experience. So is reading them. The best blogs are the ones where the person behind the keyboard shines through. You can say it takes courage to put yourself and your opinions out there. You would be correct. A lot of that got diminished when social media took over because of its hit and run nature. But blogs and the writers behind them are still there and surface now and again. Today’s Sunday Morning Reading features a few along with a few other tricks and treats. Hope you check them and the rest of the links out.
Good writing stands out. Even on the Internet where it comes in small waves and ripples, subsequently washed away by more of the same, or often overwhelmed by the slop running alongside threatening to take it over. David Todd McCarty’s A Stream Has No Memory isn’t about that necessarily, and yet it is. All things flow.
As I mentioned, personal blogging took a hit when the age of social media dawned. Yet, those that still exist, though not always as prolific, still provide insight when a writer allows you to peek into deeper waters. In many ways putting yourself out there, regardless of where, can easily become a personal hell. There’s been quite a controversy eddying about in tech circles about some who loudly condemned what was formerly Twitter reversing course and just as publicly announcing that they are returning. To each their own personal hell, I guess. I’ve stated my feelings about that here and here. Noted developer Marco Arment took to his blog with a post simply and aptly titled Community. It isn’t about what X marks the spot, it’s about what I believe deep down we all search for when we choose to share ourselves in our writing and our creative work. It can be lonely even with a magnitude of followers in whatever personal hell you choose to put yourself into.
Jason Snell links to an excellent post by Cory Doctorow called Critique And Writing. Yes, it’s about AI and folks using it to generate editorial feedback, but it’s about so much more. We develop critical thinking by critiquing the work of others who work in the same field, whether it be writing or other disciplines. I had an acting professor once tell the class that the way we responded to the work of others told him more about how we were developing (or not) as actors as the work we ourselves did onstage.
In the category of things we all share but wish we didn’t Neil Steinberg takes on scams and their persistent and constantly replicating existence in I Look Forward To Reviewing Your Proposal And Learning About The Quest For Pie.
Natasha MH takes a look at perhaps the year’s most controversial film, Digger, in Hail The Conquering Heroes. That film is becoming a personal measuring stick for me as to who sees the world we live in as I do and who doesn’t.
Halloween is upon us. With grandkids that’s quite a treat. But it can also be tricky. I’m headed there next weekend because my grandson has convinced us that we have to go trick-or-treating with him and his sister. He’s chosen for me to be costumed as a T-Rex. (Wearing costumes is my own personal hell.) Regardless of my escapades, I marvel at all of the decorations that abound and proliferate in yards up and down every block of every town rendering them all somewhat meaningless. Rex Huppke takes on the topic in America Has An Addiction To Giant Halloween Skeletons.
And if Halloween spirits swirling amongst all of the evil things going on in the real world aren’t enough to scare the beejeebus out of you give a read to Max Seddon’s piece The Putin Whisperers about three men who worked to stop Putin from unleashing nuclear Armageddon. Some things are just damn scary.
All things flow.

CW: National leader Christopher Luxon poses with child sex offender, shock horror
National and Act have cranked up the rhetoric this week because left-wing candidates spoke with gangs. That tactic has backfired because endless photos exist of Nat MPs doing exactly the same thing.
So for no particular reason, here's a photo of Christopher Luxon posing with convicted child sex offender Roger Buchanan.
National's vetting process is still lax. Buchanan was convicted in 2021, yet National still appointed him to their Palmerston North electorate committee.
And of course everyone remembers David Seymour protecting paedophile Tim Jago when he was Act party president.
People in glasshouses etc.

The task is "to give yourself unconditionally to the conditionality of each overwhelming, disturbing, and rewarding guise of love." (D. Whyte) I think this is in fact what one-on-one organizing is about. It's easier to think in terms of formulas -- two ears, one mouth; ask questions; meet them where they are -- but if we know the urgency of our need for solidarity, we need to think in terms like those articulated by David Whyte.

Synopsis (via Letterboxd):
When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.
My Thoughts:
Night of the Living Dead co-writer John Russo split off from George Romero to create his own zombie franchise beginning with this 1980s time capsule of a movie. The movie is set around a medical supply warehouse in Louisville where drums of the toxic gas that causes zombieism were accidentally sent by the military. Remember the Reagan Era 80s when nonetheless the cultural zeitgeist was deeply mistrustful of the military rather than “support the troops?” Naturally, the gas is released affecting not just the warehouse but the nearby cemetery where a group of punks have gathered to party.
The blue collar workers (all of whom seem to be played by familiar character actors that I cannot place where I’ve seen them before) get most of the best lines. There’s the wiseacre Frank training the new hire Freddy, their hapless boss who makes all the wrong decisions when he takes charge, and the deadpan mortician Eddie. The punks are funny in that 80s movie punks are always the same over-the-top stereotypes. The girl who strips naked for the entire film is gratuitous though.
And then there are the zombies who just want “BRAIIIIIINSSS!!!” because they stave off the pain of decay (possibly a metaphor for substance abuse?). It’s hard to believe that is the first depiction of zombies craving brains. The idea of zombies who not only talk, but can hold conversations is a bit off-putting, but then again the “Send more cops!” gag is hilarious.
This isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s corny fun with a lot of great one-liners, and probably would be exponentially more enjoyable at a crowded theater screening.

This slipped past my radar when it happened, but this ruling is a significant sea change in #copyright vs #LLMs training theft.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled on September 29, 2026, in Thomson #Reuters v. ROSS Intelligence, that using copyrighted text to train an #AI model does not constitute fair use when the AI product directly competes with the original work.
For authors and artists who have seen prompts like “in the style of Terry Pratchett, or in the style of David Hockney”, this is an important ruling. All bets are off when it comes to the Supremes though. I guess we need to find out how much Reuters has preemptively paid #GOP whisperers to know if things will go their way. https://www.courthousenews.com/ai-training-of-copyrighted-material-not-fair-use-third-circuit
