La novela narra las peripecias de Genly Ai, un humano de visita en Gueden o Invierno, planeta helado compuesto por las naciones antagonistas Karhide y Orgoreyn. La finalidad de su visita es incluir a ambos en Ecumen, la confederación estelar pacífica de planetas habitados por los seres humanos. Genly Ai comparte el peso narrativo con Estraven, el primer ministro de Karhide, que es acusado de traición y desterrado. Finalmente, ambos, que parecían tan distantes, terminan trabando una amistas a través de un viaje infinito cruzando páramos helados.
“La mano izquierda de la oscuridad” es una novela de Úrsula K. Le Guin, prolífica novelista de ciencia ficción. Al inicio se hace un poco compleja de entender (y la terminología exótica no ayuda) pero poco a poco, todo va cobrando sentido. Destaca sobre todo la naturaleza introspectiva de sus protagonistas, pero, sobre todo, la comprensión de mundos distantes, con sus peculiares características fisiológicas. La más llamativa de todas es el hermafroditismo de los habitantes de Invierno, algo que implica una forma de ver la vida y unas costumbres totalmente diferentes a las de los seres humanos. En suma, la novela es un relato de viaje, conocimiento de mundos de otras estrellas, y una historia de lealtad y fraternidad que trascienden las apariencias.

Fordham's art is great: the Earthsea archipelago looks cool and misty, like it's in the Pacific Northwest, and there are 2-page spreads that remind me of JMW Turner's ocean paintings. It also pares down the text a great deal, which is good; many literary adaptations end up being too wordy, but this adaptation is admirably sparse.
