Hello fellow #laserdisk and/or #electronics nerds. I bought a #pioneer CLD-2700 today for scrap pricing. It does not turn on, at all. No standby light, no nothing.
I found a suspiciously rusty looking screw in the psu area that looks suspiciously like electrolyte damage?
Can someone with a bit more experience than me weigh in? I'm pretty comfortable with soldering and such but I'm really not good with analogue electronics or power supplies.

It's always best to, when you create debug messages, show them to your users.
That way your users don't have to GUESS whether you give a shit or not!

Hey fellow #retrocomputing kids. In my quest to make the very bestest #PATA (#IDE) emulation device there's some tradeoffs to be made.
The device would allow you to emulate up to two PATA devices as once. Any combination of HDD/CDROM/ZIP maybe more.
Listed speeds are of course dependent on what you spend on the actual backing storage :) The 128mb card you got for free in "my first digital camera" is going to be slow :P
Would you prefer, (ordered by device cost. cheapest first.)

I've been playing around with #LiteX and #migen #HDL lately and I think it's finally starting to sink in that you can really just do almost arbitrary amounts of "stuff" per clock (limitations apply, objects in mirror may appear closer etc).
It's really very fun! And between trellis, #yosys and #nextpnr you can just... Do it without begging any vendor for a free copy of an EDA.
I highly recommend it! It's so much fun!
You can make your own SoC with deranged peripherals!

My current thinking is that in order to make a resolution independent UI toolkit one must first have a resolution independent drawing library?
The things I've found on that were algorithms based on device independent pixels.
Is that still actually the state of the art?
My primary design constraint is that I want the scaling to be zero cost when there's no actual scaling happening.
Can anyone point me to some good books/posts on the subject?

It occurred to me that I've had a #harddisk fail on me and lose data in like 2001 and vowed to only use #raid ever since.
And I have, my primary laptop has 4 #nvme drives in raid10, my thin and light has 2 in raid 1, my desktop 4 in raid 10 also.
It also occurred to me that even since the first sata ssd I've used I've never not even once had an #ssd fail without warning, ever.
I'm probably gonna keep using raid but I'm beginning to think maybe it's not really necessary any more...

If you were wondering if you could print from a #hpux system running a #windows3 application via Wabi via JetDirect being emulated on an Oki c542 printer.
Yes, yes you can. It all just kind of works without much fuss, except that I had to change the snmp community name for my printer because the old hpux drivers don't seem to like the snmpv2 stuff?
I'm kind of floored this all works.

Die ersten Bilder des Vera C. Rubin Observatory wurden der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Allein schon die technischen Daten des Teleskops sind atemberaubend, gar nicht zu sprechen von den wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen, die durch die Beobachtungen zu erhoffen sind.

I had performance problems in #Doom over #IPX, that turned out to be because one of my nics was running at 10 half duplex.
So I replaced it with a PCI nic. But it wasn't getting an IRQ at all. So I had to move it to a different slot which was directly next to the AGP. So now there's capton tape on the back of the NIC so it doesn't short out against the VGA heatsink.
Aren't #retrocomputers just the best? 😄

@golem Telefonica will an die #Kulturfrequenzen um billig Reichweite ausbauen zu können.
Der Schaden für die #Kulturwirtschaft - bis zu den kleinsten Dorf-Vereinshäusern - wäre unermesslich hoch und würde für viele den Ruin bedeuten.
