I had performance problems in #Doom over #IPX, that turned out to be because one of my nics was running at 10 half duplex.

So I replaced it with a PCI nic. But it wasn't getting an IRQ at all. So I had to move it to a different slot which was directly next to the AGP. So now there's capton tape on the back of the NIC so it doesn't short out against the VGA heatsink.

Aren't #retrocomputers just the best? 😄

Gestern war es soweit, es wurde das alte DOS-Spiel "Master of Orion 2" gespielt jedoch nicht wie zuerst angedacht in englisch sondern in der deutschen Version (na ja eher einer denglischen Version 🤣).

Gespielt wurde es via DOSBox über IPX-Netzwerk im Multiplayer.

How does #DOSBox #IPX emulation work within its environment? I get the "tunnel packets over UDP" thing but my question is, how does a game (DOOM, for example) within DOSBox know the IPX network is "running" and how to send packets into it?

Usually DOS stuff had to have drivers for everything - a game would have 10 different soundcard drivers, for example, because no common soundcard API existed - how is this not the same situation for IPX networks, which could be on an NE2000 or a 3c501 or any other NIC?
