Yay, #diy #repaired a free lawnmower. Ignition was fine as it was firing on some break cleaner. All carb gaskets were brittle (1997 vintage...). A New carb costs 18 bucks and after adjusting the mixture (it drew way too much fuel) it runs fine. But I already have 3 lawnmowers 🙈 lets see if it finds a good home.

Additionally, it’s looking like there are some transistors gone too.
I see zero conformal coating on this, meaning moisture can get everywhere. What finally killed it was a broken automatic waterer, but still….
I think probably about 20 components need to be replaced in order to get this back to functioning, and I’m not entirely sure that that is worth my time. I would buy a OEM replacement, but frankly as the company that made this purchased it from a third-party, and I don’t seem to be able to buy it direct from either of them. I’m just gonna go with a third-party solution.

OK, so now I know why my e bike stopped charging….
There’s a massive amount of corrosion. Luckily, I found a replacement online that didn’t have the correct connector. I repurposed the original connector on the new unit. SAdly, the new unit doesn’t have an NTC connection, so aill have to keep an eye on it to prevent overheating.

I finally decided to buy my first pair of #luxury #sunglasses from #rayban after spending decades wearing cheap stuff. The big reason is because Ray-Bans can be #repaired while cheap sunglasses cannot. So between the 20% discount I received and that little factoid, the purchase made sense. I believe strongly in #righttorepair as a way to keep goods out of the landfill and I appreciate having things that can reasonably be expected to stand the test of time. #fixit

My favourite hammock for on our balcony broke and landed me on my ass, last month. Just got around to fixing it with parts of a new lashing strap that's rated for much more weight than me. The hammock itself is still in good shape, so this should last me some more years, now.
(I got the hammock from Kickstarter years ago, in a time when I was still fascinated by that website... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/element5/skyfloat-a-true-must-have-for-your-outdoor-adventu)

Looking back at the archive I downloaded from the #birdsite, I found some fun pictures. Those are from 2016, when I got a #Tektronix 576 curve tracer. It was designed to be #repaired! It even sported a roll of special soldering wire for the repairs. I love the notice "IT IS DESIRABLE THAT ONLY SILVER-BEARING SOLDER BE USED ON THE CERAMIC TERMINALS AND FOR THINNING THE IRON. ORDINARY TIN-LEAD SOLDER MAY BE USED BUT REPEATED USE WILL BREAK THE SOLDER TO CERAMIC BOND. SEE YOUR INSTRUCTION MANUAL"

I received some spare pieces for the #RevoxB77, motor capacitors and ball bearings. Someone tried to lubricate the reel ball bearings, but they were completely shot. #repaired #AnalogAudio

Well, this Mobo + #AM386 CPU combo survived all the benchmarks I threw at it, and all the checks in CheckIt. It has never shown any sign of instability even after leaving it on continuous mem testing for hours.
This means that:
A) this mobo is #repaired
B) I can release my QFP->PGA adapter for 386DX as it seems stable at 40Mhz
Barring unexpected issues (which have been disturbingly common in the last month), tomorrow I'll work on the repo to make it presentable, then release it. -

Okay, so here's what was wrong with it: there was no way it could turn on! The blue wires from the switch should have gone into the right-hand side of the power board, and the red and black wires need to go to the connector on the amp board. Switch it round, charge a battery for a bit from the 15 V input, and it works. And is LOUD!
I put the service manual up on Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/sm_tvm10

Today, I #repaired another #9V #LEGO #cable. As you can see, they were in terrible condition. I ran out of the white cable, but I still had this red-black one.
Now, the old #LEGOTrains can run again. -

Today, I #repaired two old #LEGO #Technic #9V #cables, luckily having a suitable one at home. It's not the original color, but that's fine as long as it works. I #extended the #wires significantly.
The #process was straightforward. I opened the LEGO #connector #housing, removed the old #cable, inserted the new one, and then closed the housing, pushed back in the contact pins with a #hammer and an old #screwdriver. lol
I #checked continuity after each connector to quickly #identify any #issues.

Spent a good few hours yesterday watching some episodes of "Den store strikkedyst" (The great knit off) season 1.
Yes the show is in Danish, and no I don't fully understand it all, but enough to at least get the gist of what the judges say to the contestants.
Today, I #repaired my small packback and sorted some things in the hobby room.
I also did an attempt at crocheting a Tunisian hexagon in the round pattern taken from a CAL (https://knitterknotter.com/tunisian-blanket-cal-2024), it was fun

So a couple of months back, when I moved into the new house, a friend of mine brought me over his dead #UPS.. It's an #APC #rackmount device similar to this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/384941952263
He gave it to me because I fix stuff, and if I can't fix it, I part it out for other projects. It wouldn't power on for him.
It wouldn't power on for me, either...until I popped the top of the case off and found a loose/corroded connection. Did a quick and dirty repair on that and the unit powered on... then I checked the battery pack
Holy crap he's lucky... The balloons^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hbatteries had expanded and had gotten so hot that a couple of them, literally, MELTED TOGETHER. He literally dodged a bullet - this was a fire waiting to happen.
I ordered new batteries for it, which will arrive on Tuesday. This means I get to spend tomorrow going over the circuit board making sure that all the connections and solder joints are good, all the components are good, etc, etc, etc. before I put new batteries in the battery pack and run a full test.
So, basically, I just got a 3000VA 120V rackmount UPS for the cost of 50 feet of 10/3 Romex (I'm only using the white, ground, and black wires - saving the red in case I ever need to switch to 220/240V), an L5-30 socket, a plastic wall box, a cover plate, a 30A single-pole breaker, and 8 batteries - totaling somewhere near $180.00 US.
Deal of the friggin century.
Everything I have computer-wise right now is #used, #repaired, #recycled, or #repurposed. Even the video cards were used when I bought them.
Frugality pays off, sometimes, and I LOVE it.
EDIT TO ADD (and fix typos):
I managed to get one "row" of batteries going. These are the only four out of the 16 (two battery packs of 8) that tested "OK". I've got it up, on the bench, charging. We'll see what happens as I keep an eye on it throughout the day. -
"Narratives of supply chains and raw materials are a poor fit for early modern Europeans’ “thrifty” habit of reusing and reworking goods into new forms. This essay stresses the importance of such habits for early modern work using the example of paper, as a medium, instrument, and epistemic resource in various domestic and scientific spheres. Thrifty perspectives challenge not only linear supply narratives but also enduring accounts of the identities of materials themselves."
