Now, I’m not exactly what you would call a retro hardware enthusiast, but even I knew Iomega never made a FireWire ZIP drive.

Growing up, my #Dad always went with the #underdogs in the #tech world, and it trickled onto me. We lived in #Texas. We didn't have a #Nintendo, we had a #Sega #MasterSystem. We didn't have an #intel processor, we had Cyrix. We didn't use #jazz or #iomega, we used SyQuest. We didn't run #Windows98, we used #Linux. We didn't go with #AOL, we went with #Compuserve. That spirit of #offthebeatenpath was awesome to grow up with, I saw so much cool obscure shit that others people never saw.

I'll probably never own a drive to read those, but these are some very impressive floppy disk cartridges. Also, 20 megs in 1984 - that's more than a typical hard disk had at that time. 😲

The card was about $250 ($473 today) and the media was $10 each or $ 0.25 per MB. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain…

Does anyone have a raw image (DD, sector image) of an "Iomega Tools" Zip disk? I'm curious how they implemented the dual Mac/PC format.

Beware: don't put it in a PC or Mac with the Iomega Tools software installed. If it sees a Tools disk, it'll delete the other partition and 'reclaim' it as free space. Guess how I ruined mine!
Imaging on Linux with "dd" should be safe.
An unmodified disk will report as being read-only.

Приветствую всех! Казалось бы, о накопителях iOmega ZIP не писал только ленивый. Даже здесь, на Хабре было несколько статей, посвящённых этому во всех смыслах неоднозначному формату. Но вот в мои руки тоже попал такой привод, и я подумал: а что бы не затронуть и эту технологию? Тем более, что мне есть, что добавить к предыдущим обзорам. Итак, в сегодняшней статье поговорим об iOmega ZIP — носителе информации, совмещавшем в себе недостатки как дискет, так и жёстких дисков. Узнаем, как устроены и работают такие устройства и посмотрим, что они могут. Традиционно будет много интересного.

От перфокарт в облако. Где вы хранили файлы десятилетие назад?

В годы моей бурной юности в ходу были пятидюймовые дискеты. Их и вправду можно было назвать “floppy”, то есть, гибкими — футляр из плотного коленкора довольно легко сгибался, пробивался степлером и даже с некоторым усилием сворачивался в трубку. Перфокарты я тоже застал — родители иногда приносили их домой из вычислительного центра, в котором работали, и маленький я рисовал на этих забавных карточках с напечатанными типографским способом рядами цифр (и совой, сова с надписью «КАНГАС» почему-то накрепко засела в памяти) короткими фломастерами от плоттеров-графопостроителей, которые в ассортименте добывались там же, в ВЦ. Сейчас, используя многогигабайтовое облако, смешно вспоминать эту бумажную карточку емкостью 80 байт. Зато можно сказать, что эволюцию носителей информации от перфокарт к облаку я увидел собственными глазами.
