@evildanwallace Du baust die Festplatte aus, und hängst sie an einen modernen PC/Mac mit Linux/macOS/Windows.
- Ist es eine EIDE-Festplatte (UDMA & Co.), nimm einen billigen USB-IDE-Adapter
- Ist es eine prä-IDE-Festplatte (CHS, meist erkennbar daran, dass Cylinder/Heads/Sector-Angaben obendrauf stehen), dann nimm entweder einen alten PC (mittlere 486er Klasse), oder einen "ATAboy“ IDE-USB-Adapter. Letzterer kann C-H-S-Adressierung.
Moderne PCs und moderne, normale USB-IDE-Adapter können CHS nicht und erkennen die Festplatte nicht oder falsch. Dann geht nichts.
Nachdem sie angeschlossen ist: mit ddrescue in ein Image auslesen. Mit Kopien dieses Images arbeiten. Nie auf der Originalfestplatte.
Nächster Schritt ist dann „in welchem Dateiformat liegen die Daten vor“ …

Hey fellow #retrocomputing kids. In my quest to make the very bestest #PATA (#IDE) emulation device there's some tradeoffs to be made.
The device would allow you to emulate up to two PATA devices as once. Any combination of HDD/CDROM/ZIP maybe more.
Listed speeds are of course dependent on what you spend on the actual backing storage :) The 128mb card you got for free in "my first digital camera" is going to be slow :P
Would you prefer, (ordered by device cost. cheapest first.)

I spent this evening trying to get my physical retro PC, a Pentium 166MHz running Windows 98 SE, to connect to an 80GB IDE harddisk. The BIOS seems to be limited to a maximum of 8GB, but in the end I managed to get it working. I needed to use Ontrack's Disk Manager 2000 to install a DDO driver.
I guess I became too lazy! Emulating old hardware is so much more convenient than dealing with real-world limitations like this. 😅
