look, I'm not saying telling people that are venting about [some issue] in [some platform],

to use [some other platform] due to [some platform] being under bad leadership and decaying for over a decade now is empathetic.

..but if people pose the vent like an ask for assistance, I don't think it's weird to receive such answers, especially if the switch fixed it for those people.

I could really use a service like #7Cups right now, but not only is it #ProprietarySoftware, but it might use "aggregated" data from chats for R&D. Yikes.

I do have therapists, but I feel like I'd like to first chat unprofessionally with an English speaker anonymously… which is what 7 Cups provides.

... think about the purpose the utopian hallucinations about AI are serving. What work are these benevolent stories doing in the culture as we encounter these strange new tools? Here is one hypothesis: they are the powerful and enticing cover stories for what may turn out to be the largest and most consequential theft in human history. Because what we are witnessing is the wealthiest companies in history ( #Microsoft, #Apple, #Google, #Meta, #Amazon …) unilaterally seizing the sum total of human knowledge that exists in digital, scrapable form and walling it off inside proprietary products, many of which will take direct aim at the humans whose lifetime of labor trained the machines without giving permission or consent.

#TIL about Inner Source, which is basically Open Source minus the Software Freedoms. Coined by (surprise, surprise) that great friend of Free Software, Tim O'Reilly, Inner Source is the parasitic use of Open Source development practices by proprietary software companies, with no respect for the software freedoms of the people using the resulting software. *shudder*

The #proprietarySoftware scene may have a bit more momentum from the #moneyPump post-1971, from Epstein-type backing *cough* *#Microshaft, c'flare, and lucrative govt contracts and collusion with organised crime like the ClA (#SpaceX).

From advert campaigns funded by ever lower interestRates (Ggle, Amzn), #stockBuyBacks (Apple), taxAvoidance etc.

Honestly, #FOSS is what you MAKE IT.
