  1. A happy birthday to my Grandpa Henry Neufeld. Born this day in 1922 at present day, Hrushivka, Zhaporihzia,(Russia-occupied) Ukraine.

Here he is beside my Grandmother on their wedding day in 1943.

Oh cool! You know... Google maps is incredible. I was just looking at the location of the old Mennonite village on Google Earth and up popped a landmark pin and photo just down the lane from his birthplace. It is named:

"Staryy Holandsʹkyy Mlyn - Historical landmark
    Unnamed Road
    Hrushivka
    Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine
    71775”

Which translates as “Old Dutch Mill”... which would jive with Mennonite history!! I wonder if my Grandpa was ever in that mill, likely not as he was only 2 or 3 when they left for Canada but surely his parents and siblings were.

I wonder if it has survived the war? Another war…

  2. PLANNING AN EPIC RAIL TRIP/SPEAKING TOUR

I was able to snag a half-price #Amtrak railpass on a special, so I'm planning some cross-country travel, but I also would love to take advantage of this opportunity to get to do some speaking in different communities while traveling.

The cities I'll be at (and would have time to speak in) are: Seattle, Portland, SF Bay area, and Denver.

The topics I can present on would include:

    1. #DraftCounseling - Why local groups need to start getting ready to help people who may face military conscription under the Trump administration?

    2. The issue of #IllegalOrders under US #MilitaryLaw as well as #InternationalLaw

    3. #Indigenous Draft Resistance - stories and reflections from the history of resistance by Indigenous Americans to being drafted

    4. The joys of engaging in MRP (multi-religious practice) --- I'm a Humanistic Jew who is also an active member of a progressive #Mennonite church.

    5. Something else? - I'm open to other topics related to military law, #HumanisticJudaism, and the progressive Mennonite tradition.

As far as cost goes, I'm asking for local groups who can afford it to either: (1) find me a place to a stay, ideally a private bedroom that I can get to by mass transit from the Amtrak station, or (2) pay me an honorarium of at least $100.

I'm firming up my travel plans, but it looks like the cities and dates that I would be available for speaking engagements would be:

    #Seattle, WA
    Wed, April 29 (evening)
    Thu, April 30 (all day)
    #Portland, OR
    Fri, May 1 (evening)
    #SF Bay Area
    Sunday, May 3 (all day)
    Monday, May 4 (all day)
    #Denver
Tuesday, May 6 (late evening, if train is on time)
Wed, May 7 - morning or lunch

If you know any groups who want me to speak for them and/or have other ideas, please me a message or email me at girightslawyer at gmail dot com.

    Thanks!

If you are like me and looking for an alternative way to engage with the #Jewish holiday of #Purim this year, I strongly recommend this bit of midrash (which lets us see into the mind of #QueenVashti before she bravely said no to the king) written by a professor at Eastern #Mennonite University.

Also, on a side note, I'm really happy with the number of recent articles in Anabaptist World magazine that have brought Jewish thinking and ways of engagement (such as midrash) to its pages. It obviously fits into my own bi-religious orientation, but I also think there is fertile ground for some new epiphanies when we consider concepts from different theological/philosophical perspectives.

  19. Trudno mi znaleźć jakieś obszerniejsze informacje o zabobonach i wierzeniach ludowych Olędrów.
Mennonici z Pensylwanii i Apallachów do XX wieku zachowali zwyczaj szeptania zaklęć. Czy kiedykolwiek podobna praktyka była żywa między Płockiem a Warszawą?
Czeka mnie jeszcze sporo zgłebiania historii osadników. Pewnie powinienem przekopać Kolberga. Może tam coś znajdę.

I'm sharing an essay I wrote that has a controversial thesis: that Judaism should welcome and support converts who engage in another tradition's practices.

Along the way, I discuss two past classes from the #Unyeshiva (a school of Jewish learning and unlearning from the folks behind the Judaism Unbound podcast) by Susan Katz Miller and R Esther Hugenholtz, as well as share a fair bit about my own journey.

In light of this legal ruling, I hope every #Mennonite and #Quaker family with kids in public schools objects to compulsory patriotic indoctorination.

I also recommend that families with objections to #heteronormativity raise their objections, on religious grounds.

    Why not? It's only fair.

  28. Mennonites join #ApacheStronghold on #PrayerJourney to Supreme Court

    Anabaptist World
    September 6, 2024

"#Mennonite congregations and individuals from the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery are supporting Apache Stronghold’s two-month prayer journey across the United States to deliver their appeal directly to the #USSupremeCourt.

"The #SanCarlosApache and their allies argue that a land swap tucked into a defense spending bill that gave away their sacred location of Oak Flat to create a copper mine violates their religious freedom. The journey culminates Sept. 11 in #WashingtonDC.

"The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Apache Stronghold earlier this year in a 6-5 ruling. The group is represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which will petition the high court to hear the case.

"'Obliterating the birthplace of #WesternApache religion would be a tragic betrayal of our nation’s promise of #Religious Freedom for all,' said Luke Goodrich, Becket vice president and senior counsel. 'We will ask the Supreme Court to take this case, #ProtectOakFlat and ensure that #IndigenousPeoples receive the same protection for religious freedom that all other faith groups enjoy.'

"Mennonites congregations involved in supporting the journey through prayer and hospitality included First Mennonite Church of San Francisco, Pasadena Mennonite Church in California, Shalom Mennonite Fellowship in Tucson, Ariz., Albuquerque Mennonite Church in New Mexico, Joy Mennonite Church in Oklahoma City, Raleigh Mennonite Church in North Carolina and Hyattsville Mennonite in Maryland. Acts of solidarity with the Apache ranged from preparing food to offering space to sleep to arranging public gatherings of prayer.

"'I asked myself: what does it mean to Dismantle the #DoctrineOfDiscovery? I have learned that the Apache Stronghold is not just fighting for Oak Flat, but for #MotherEarth, the greatest gift we have received. They are fighting for all of us,' said Frances Loberg, a member of Salem Mennonite Church in Oregon and the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. She has been on the prayer journey for its full course. 'I am being healed as I have seen how Mother Earth is alive. We have seen the pain and struggles all across the country. This fight for mother earth is for all of us.'"

Very thoughtful response to this query in The Bintel Brief (advice column from #TheForward).

My favorite part is this quote, "“I do think you can find your place in Jewish community, but you might not find everything you’re looking for in one community,"

This has definitely been my experience. I would be very unhappy if I was forced to choose one Jewish Community to belong to exclusively. I need my #humanistic #havurah for fellowship, inspiration, and intellectual engagement with fellow non-theists, but I also need my local brick and mortar #Reform synagogue for the experience of being part of a large pluralistic community, as well as all of the in-person opportunities for community engagement (and of course all of the programming they provide for my son).

And... I also need my non-Jewish spiritual community, my lovely quirky progressive #Mennonite church where I remain an associate member. I need to be in a space sometimes where I can be unapologetic about prioritizing #peace above all other values.
