More than the #writer. #SarahPolley adapted the #MiriamToews book into the screenplay, and #directed the film. And while I don't at all begrudge Everything Everywhere it's sweep, #WomenTalking should have been nominated for best picture. It doesn't have the wizbang rollercoaster ride of EE, but like EE, it's about being a woman/mother/daughter/wife, and imho, is actually a better film.

Polley is only the ninth woman to win this category.” #MiriamToews

  9. “That is the tyranny – the climate of fear, of punishment, that has been created,” said Ms. Toews. “The reverberations of that are endless. That culture of control and of shaming – it’s in our DNA, like it exists on a cellular level.”

  14. "Ms. Toews says she’d rather be whipped: “#Shunning is a cruel, barbaric punishment – it sends shivers down my spine. It cuts individuals off from their family and community, and designates them as unworthy of human contact. It happens all the time in different ways, and it’s destructive and sad and ridiculous and hateful.” #MiriamToews

  19. "Mr. Unger, who reads The New Yorker profile aloud to his Grade 11 students – it takes two full periods – says there are two main critiques of Ms. Toews in Steinbach: “That she is airing our dirty laundry, and that her writing is all lies.” Those things can’t both be true, Mr. Unger laughs. “She can be lying or telling our truths. But not both.”

"The author, [#MiriamToews] who was #excommunicated from the family church in her 20s, for birthing a pair of babies out of wedlock, admits she was naïve about the intensity of the outrage that Kindness, which was published when she was 40, would generate. Her wise, elder sister was not... Marjorie told Miriam. “You need to make clear that this is not an indictment of #Mennonite people or the Mennonite faith but of fundamentalism, and its culture of control.” #books #oscar

Women Talking - the last one we saw! Might be a bit of recency bias but I really liked it - very much the “this movie feels like it was a play” of this year (it wasn’t, it was a novel) with amazing performances and great, slightly stagey dialogue. Though that might be the setting. Highly recommended. #womenTalking #SarahPolley #MiriamToews #theOneThatFeelsLikeAPlay

  31. WOMEN TALKING PODCAST Claire Foy, Rooney Mars, Frances McDormand, Sarah Polley, Miriam Toews.

Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith.

The film is a striking interpretation of a novel that is loosely based on a horrifying true story about women in a Mennonite colony who were raped persistently by the men in their community while they slept, attacks the colonists initially blamed on Satan or hallucination.

The circumstances of the attacks that inspired Women Talking are nightmarish. For years, men in the Manitoba Colony used an anesthetic initially made for cattle to render girls and women unconscious and rape them. #womentalking, #clairefoy, #rooneymars, #francesmcdormand, #podcast, #podcasts, #sarahpolley, #miriamtoews, #movie #movies

  32. I picked up All My Puny Sorrows by #MiriamToews at the library, thinking it was #WomenTalking (which is now a film). Was disappointed for about half a sentence... now I can't put it down. What a great writer. #books #Canada
