So what's that #conscription good for? Well, one retiring FDF officer apparently called up for a refresher exercise a platoon of people [about 30] with the surname "Korhonen." (I wasn't involved, sadly.) My sources say the platoon performed admirably, but had some communication issues.

I used to worry about the draft a lot when I was young. Active conscription ended when I was eight, but there was still talk about bringing it back. As a young civil-liberties activist, it outraged me that the Supreme Court had sleazed it's way into handwaving the obvious antiConstitutional nature of the draft; that was probably the start of my disenchantment with the Constitution as well as the whole political establishment of the USA.

I was a worrier, and I worried about the draft •enormously•.

So when my high school social studies class was set up as a mini "Senate", my very first bill outlawed the draft.

Needless to say, my position wasn't exactly popular. In fact, I had virtually no support. But as an outraged political junkie, I knew what to do: FILIBUSTER!

And I did! I filibustered the whole damned class until the school jocks grabbed me, dragged me outside, and threw me into a deep snowbank.

Later the teacher told me that based on my filibuster I deserved an "A". I think he gave me a "B" instead, though. And I don't remember where he was when I was dumped into the snow, but he certainly didn't stop them from doing it!
