  1. Eligible men will soon be automatically registered for #MilitaryDraft

    by Melina Khan
    Updated April 9, 2026,

"Most male U.S. citizens ages 18-25 are required to register with SSS, though there has not been an active military draft since 1973, according to the agency's website.

"Now, the agency is moving to an automatic registration process, rather than requiring eligible men to sign up manually.

"The amendment to the Military Selective Service Act implementing automatic registration is set to take effect one year after the #NDAA was enacted into law, according to the bill text.

"On March 30, #SSS formally submitted automatic registration as proposed rule to OIRA, which will now review and finalize the regulatory action.
According to the SSS website, the change 'transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources.' "

  2. I'm sharing a paper that I wrote about the story of Pia Machita, a Tohono O'odham elder who led his village in resisting military conscription from 1940-1941.

It is a powerful story and one that brings to mind other moments of Indigenous resistance to the draft, including the Oklahoma Green Corn Rebellion.

FYI- the paper was first written for a class at Tohono O'odham Community College, but I did some rewriting on it after I turned it in.

Is it true that only religious people who are part of traditional peace churches, are eligible to exempted from a #USMilitary draft on the grounds of #ConscientiousObjection ?

Also what about non-Christians, including Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, etc.?

The good news is that current US law recognizes that religious faith (or even affiliation with a traditional peace church) is not required to be recognized as a CO.

Sharing this important snapshot of Jewish history, a statement signed by 23 South African Jewish conscientious objectors during the days of apartheid.

Excerpt: NATIONAL JEWISH CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS STATEMENT.

Without coercion, influence, and of our own free will and conscience; we, individual members of the Jewish community, have adopted the following stance:

As Jews, members of a people who possess a religious tradition of social justice and who have endured a history of oppression, we have resolved not to serve in the South African Defence Force. South African society is founded on a system of racial inequality and discrimination, rejected by the majority of its people. The SADF plays a role in maintaining the universally condemned system of apartheid. We regard the system of apartheid as working against the interests of the people of South Africa and in obstructing peaceful development in the region. The SADF’s ongoing destabilisation of the Frontline states, its role in South Africa’s black townships and the general militarisation of South African society are also particularly worrying to us. Our opposition to being conscripted into the SADF is based on our Jewish identity which consists of religious, historical, and cultural elements. Jewish sensitivity and consciousness, born out of oppression in the form of ghettos, pogroms, inquisitions, expulsions and the unique suffering of the holocaust; when combined with our religious and traditional longing for a just society, demand the active pursuit of peace and the elimination of all forms of injustice and racism.

“One who has the opportunity to protest against evil and remains indifferent is deemed culpable by G-d“
    (Shmot Rabba 1:2)

We see our objection to serving in the SADF as an expression of our Jewish faith and heritage, and as loyal to the majority of South Africans. We wish to make a constructive and peaceful contribution to South Africa’s future in the interests of all its people.

There are very limited options open to those opposed to conscription. We therefore call for alternatives to be made
available. We believe that non-punitive, constructive community service provides such a concrete alternative to military service. In this way, national service will become beneficial to the entire South African community.

We stand in solidarity with Jewish objectors Dave Bruce and Saul Batzofin and other imprisoned conscientious objectors and call for their immediate release.

Signed by 33 Jewish conscientious objectors, in Johannesburg and
in Cape Town. 21 September 1989.

  12. CW: N word on protest sign from 1960s

Countless #BlackAmericans had openly opposed the #VietnamWar. As early as 1965, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee produced a statement that unequivocally lambasted the war, and said that no Black American should “fight in Vietnam for the white man's freedom, until all the Negro people are free in Mississippi."

Still, thanks to the draft's implicit #RacialBias , Black Americans disproportionately served in Vietnam. This is largely because then-college students — the majority of whom were white men — could defer enlistment. As such, the burden of enlistment fell more on non-college educated men, particularly non college-educated #BlackMen. As a result, by 1967, 64 percent of all eligible Black American males had been drafted. Only 31 percent of eligible white men had.

  13. #Myanmar’s junta-ordered #MilitaryDraft has exacerbated a shortage of workers caused by the country’s #CivilWar, and the gap is being filled by minors who are vulnerable to #LaborRights violations, experts and rights groups said Friday.

The growth in #ChildLabor is an #underreported impact of the #junta’s People’s Military Service Law, enacted in February as part of a bid to shore up its forces amid heavy losses to various ethnic armies and rebel militias since its 2021 #CoupDetat.

Under the law, men between the ages of 18 and 35 and women between 18 and 27 can be drafted to serve in the armed forces for two years.
