  10. Hype for the Future 39E: Amish and Mennonite Communities

While the Amish and Mennonite communities are obviously identifiable by the abstinence from modern technology and related amenities of modern life, the Mennonite communities are often more diverse, with communities ranging from Amish-style to Mennonite communities with full modern conveniences, though continuing to prefer plain colors such as white and/or black. While horses and buggies are usually unable to exceed 25 miles per hour safely, thus the legal obligation for the safety triangles, […]

#MennoniteAction is turning two, and it's a sobering anniversary. We wish to see a free #Palestine, and see our work become obsolete. And yet, we're encouraged by two years of faithful expression of #solidarity, two years of learning, training, taking bold public action, and experiencing unity together in this movement. We invite all in our community of #Mennonites 4Ceasefire
to join us on November 20th for our Anniversary Call, this month's Mass Call oriented to reflection, remembering, and recommitting to the work that still lies ahead. RSVP to join here: mennoniteaction.org/call

Die Amish, #Hutterer & einige Old Order #Mennonites wachsen dadurch sogar rapide.

  30. Book Review: Miriam Toewes’ latest!
““Nah, Abe, maybe you should read it yourself,” he says, but I wouldn’t be the Schteinback Post’s top book reviewer if I actually read the books, now would I? I just go by whatever the pastor & the gossip tells me. “

CBC: U of Winnipeg project aims to keep stories of Mennonite immigration to Canada in 1920 from disappearing. “Researchers at the University of Winnipeg are working on what they say will be the largest oral history project on Mennonites in the country, trying to capture stories of those who fled the Soviet Union in the 1920s before those stories are lost.”

  37. This picture looks like it was taken in early spring or late winter. Judging by my father’s outfit, my sister’s outfit, and my polished shoes it was a Sunday morning. My mother snapped the pic just before we piled into the ‘55 Oldsmobile my father adored. We were on our way to worship and sing at one of the local Mennonite churches. The church my grandparents helped found in the 1930s after their wanderings from Russia, Siberia, the civil war, Mexico, and Manitoba brought them to Black Creek on Vancouver Island.
My father was about 25. Today, August 21, is his birthday.
He wasn’t an easy father. But I always knew he loved me, and when I stopped expecting him to be the father I wanted him to be, then he became the father he was. I was 40 before I really came to appreciate him. Then we had about 20 good years together. Thank god for the wisdom that, sometimes, comes with getting a little older.
