I'm sharing an essay I wrote that has a controversial thesis: that Judaism should welcome and support converts who engage in another tradition's practices.

This weekend was a really big weekend for myself and my family. My wife and 16 year old step-son completed the process of conversion to the Jewish people! They did it through our local Reform temple (a wonderful community that I'm proud to be part of), which involved a lot more ritual and ceremony than my own conversion through the #Humanistic movement a few years previous.

But much more important than noting this difference, the biggest takeaway for me was how touching my family's earnest and intense desire to join this tradition was. This was best shown by their nervousness. ---- Despite my frequent reminders that, "the rabbi wouldn't be sponsoring before the bet din if she had any concerns about your Jewishness" they were both so anxious, and it was such a beautiful, precious thing that they cared so much.

And I got to be there for it all --- they let me sit in the room during the #BetDin (both of them did great as I knew they would) and then I got to be my son's witness for the #mikvah. It was such a moving day.

Typing this mostly for my own memories, but also because I'm so proud of my household for now being 100% converts to #Judaism, which makes it all the more precious. We all worked for this and I think it is a good thing to be proud of.
