  4. oh neat

this thing also has an FM radio which is nice enough - it doesn't sound amazing but it sounds better than you'd expect - but if you're on a GMRS channel in the background and it gets activity, it'll silence the FM and play what's coming in on GMRS.

i mean idk maybe that's normal on these little HTs but I hadn't encountered it yet, nice little feature baofeng

  6. What this does is let me have basically the same labels on here as I set up on the Midland 40W unit, instead of frequency which is the default. Why frequency? I _do not know_. GMRS is _channelised_. This radio _does_ let you _receive_ on arbitrary frequencies and lets you store like 1000 presets, which is _great_, but the default on the bottom 30 should bloody well be the defined channel numbers.

But no, big string of digits showing the frequency that literally no one in GMRS needs to care about. Arf.

  8. There we go, that's much better. Had to use CHIRP to give channels names, but that's fine, it's way better than Baofeng's software anyway and now I have it set up on the pocket PC.

Also I definitely need to relabel these little handhelds Beifong insead of Baofeng.

  14. If you have a #qrz1 Explorer HT and programmed it with CHIRP and it does a weird thing where it's receiving a signal from a repeater but it will not break the squelch, I found a workaround that should at least fix the issue for some of the repeaters:

In CHIRP go to View -> Show Extra Fields

In your saved QRZ-1 config find the affected repeater(s)

Change the Optional Signaling option to OFF

Save the config and upload it to the radio

  16. It is not just about words, but meaning. Professional translators and interpreters know this. We got you! 🐙📖

    > In a way, human language acts as a compression and decompression scheme—the listener must decompress the meaning of words in the same way the speaker intended when encoding the message for them to be properly understood. 20. I just got my Quansheng TK-11 in the mail today. Initial thoughts that aren’t covered in any unboxing videos:

There was a power adapter taped to the inner box. The charging dock has an Asian power plug. Fortunately, I can charge it via USB-C.

This isn’t as heavy as my Motorola XTS 1500, but this has enough heft to be used as a bludgeoning weapon.

I love the circular lanyard connector!

I hate how fragile the rubber port covers are.

The T-shaped antenna is meant for the LF/MF/HF bands, but it has “0.153-18 MHz” stamped on it, so you won’t need it for anything about 17 meters. Set it aside. The rubber duck is very long.

On that note, you do know this can only transmit FM, right? You read the website before clicking Buy, didn’t you? That limits you to 10 meters and up.

It can receive CW on 2200 meters. Fat lot of good that does when you can’t transmit that low.

If you had told me this is my UV-K5 with the Ezgumer firmware, I would have believed you. It’s virtually identical, down to the fonts and screen layout. The blue backlight is your only clue.

Dear lord, the CPS is awful. It’s perfectly cromulent, but it’s missing simple things like copy and paste. That means if you want to insert a channel, you need to edit every single one below that.

The radio can receive on 33 cm and maybe 23 cm, but the CPS won’t let you program frequencies above 600 MHz.

Someone opened a ticket with CHIRP to support this model. They’re working on it. GOOD!

No programming cable is included, but your Baofeng one works fine.

  22. oh yeah the other thing I did as part of today's Tesla Takedown protest

I finally took along the HT - handheld shortwave transmitter - using the parts I made to hook it to my bike:

    thingiverse.com/thing:7027125

kinda scary at first because of hard bumps making me worried about jarring the radio badly, then I remembered "oh right I can engage the fork suspension" and after that everything was pretty great! Being on the handlebars, the radio and holder get the full benefit of the suspension so it gets a super smooth ride.

I didn't really try to use the radio, tho', being busy with the protest. I did some scanning but didn't really pick up much. maybe next time?

Last week, we visited Genova, here in Italy. While tuning into the local frequency 📻 with my portable Quansheng UV-K5, I managed to make contact with Fabio #F5VKV from France! It still amazes me every time I make a cross-border contact with just a handheld. 🌍

  26. wo, i wish there is someone here in #Italy that can create an #Allstarlink node that i can connect my cheap quansheng #UVK5 on. if anyone knows, i am on a budget so looking for as cheap as possible. i just wanted to talk to english speaking people using my #HT #Radio. using a mobile phone in DVSwitch feels unnatural. #BlindHam #HamRadio #AmateurRadio #DY1AJD

  28. Is there a common name for this user interface behavior? You press and hold a button on your handheld transceiver to start scanning. The radio will either: 1) start scanning as soon as you’ve held it long enough or 2) only start scanning when you release the button, provided you also held it long enough in the first place. #2 is evil and should die but I think it has to have a name before we can start killing it.

  29. @thomholwerda

I'm with #OpenBSD on this one.

    Disable #HT by default.

It's not worth the scores of security vulnerabilities for a 20-30% performance boost.

Traveling with my #yaesu #ht #FT5 #HamRadio. bag was pulled off security conveyor belt and opened.
#TSA agent pulls out my #magnetic mount, 1/4 wave, dual band #2m / #70cm #antenna with the #coax wound around the base.
    TSA agent: “what’s this?”
    Me: “an antenna”
TSA agent to the agent running the X-ray: “it’s an antenna!”
I stuff it back in my bag and head to my gate. This is the first and only time this has happened.

  31. @howardu I'm sure one of #howarduniversity #homecoming2024 #corporatesponsors would be happy to pay for more cell coverage. As I said in the video, #amateurradio was working. #APRS was pinging and I could reach the K3ERA #repeater in District Heights, MD on 145.230 - pl 110.9 pgcera.org/ with my #HT. Future events should have #commsplans coordinated with #CERT and other community organizations--including W3HAC who had volunteers at the #womensmarch and #marinemarathon years ago 4/

  32. Pulled these out, just to make sure they are still working - they are.... the Model 100 has picked up some lines in the screen thou. I'm really not sure how to fix that.

I've held on to these for years - mostly because they are just cool to have, and some because I always think these would be great to use for portable #packet #radio
At one time I even had all the cables to for a #KenwoodTH-D7 #HT
