My old #FRS radios still work. The Motorola Talkabout FRS radio was first sold in 1997, but I bought my pair around the year 2004. It's like #AmateurRadio except it requires no license. I gave one of our cats an opportunity to say something over the radio, but he was too busy eating.

Digital modes are allowed over #FRS radio (as of 2017), without an #AmateurRadio license. Here is a test I performed, using #fldigi to decode the data.

#FRS has the advantage of being free to use without a license. I never felt compelled to get GMRS, since I already have an #AmateurRadio license I could use if I wanted more power.

So, why did you consider #GMRS worth the additional effort?

After seeing the videos of #Japanese #radio enthusiasts using low-power radios to hopscotch a message for the funz, I have the urge to do something similar. Message passing via #FRS. Looks like #Canada uses the same frequency list for their "public #UHF FM radio service" as well... And Mexico... And Brazil... and "most South American Countries."

I have brought up ideas like this for emergencies for communal information exchange, and people often go down the "just do X" route... And, look, not everyone is getting a #hamRadio license. Not everyone is getting GMRS. EVERYONE has an #FRS radio in a drawer someplace. The infrastructure is there, people CAN self-organize

Added a GMRS antenna to the car. It blends in great and looks good. Ignore the dirty car, I just drove 1500 miles.

I added a Midland 15 watt transceiver right before the trip and used it quite a bit. Craftsman and I used it in Denver for a couple of hours.

Went looking for a #NOAA weather radio, discovered that there's a ton of options, then discovered that you can get walkie-talkies with NOAA, and that a well-reputed model is not an #FRS radio but a #GMRS radio, and then went looking for GMRS info in the local area ....

Okay, that's a rabbithole for sure.

Just had a lake trip where there were definitely a few times that radios would have been useful, but I was the only #ham in the group.

As much as the Radio-nerd in me would prefer #GMRS for flexibility, #FRS would be sufficient and easier for this sort of outing. Are there any quality FRS radios that people recommend these days?

Preferably with USB-C charging.

FRS is the kind specifically designed for families and no license required.

These 2 are cheap portable HAMs that can be "detuned" to work like a FRS but have way more capability.

"Quansheng UV-5R or UV-K8 are generally pretty cheap on AliExpress, I'd recommend the latter myself - not so much intended for family comms, but will absolutely do the job"

They're ~$30 each. Even with tariffs.

Short test - 9 miles but some hills and stuff - and the thing's a rock. So far, anyway. That radio did not move.

Also, the second-lowest volume level is plenty loud. So far, I'm pretty chuffed about it. Enough so to print another copy for Anna's bike.
