  1. I have a Baofeng DM-32. After setting up channels in CPS and writing to the radio I found all of my repeaters defaulted to Talkaround mode. I can't find a way to change this in CPS. Can someone point me in the right direction? TIA.

  2. Baofeng celebrates it's 25 year anniversary with a special edition of the UV-5R. Baofeng drastically lowered the prices of handheld VHF/UHR radios with the UV-5R in 2012 priced at 20 to 30€.

In my opinion, it's the #glock of ham radio. Many people still buy or recommend buying the UV-5R even though there are way better alternatives for the same price. It doesn't have USB-C charging or upgradeable firmware. The UV-5R only has 128 memory channels and the display / ui is very... "basic". Glock owners would say "but it's so reliable", baofeng fans might say "but it' so cheap, don't complain".

    Let's talk about the alternatives.
The Quansheng UV-K5 has USB-C charging and custom firmware like the F4HWN firmware that supports 200 memory channels and a spectrum view among other features.
The Tidradio TD-H3 has USB-C charging as well as programming over USB which the UV-K5 cannot. The Quansheng UV-K1 also adds USB programing. The F4HWN firmware supports the UV-K1 as well.

  3. The new #Baofeng UV-5R Mini arrived today, and ooooh is it TINY?!?! Will have play time later. First brief 2 minutes test I did was : does external PTT work properly with and without squelch (it doesn’t on Quansheng UV-K5(8) ) - yes it does. For eventual low-cost packet node use, this is essential.

One oddity though, will re-test when I have more time. External mic attached, squelch off, turn the volume right up to max - it starts generating RF as though you were keying up randomly.

  4. I have seen pictures of #ICE agents carrying #baofeng radios, how much do you wanna bet they're using them on the default frequency and unencrypted

  5. Security Radio 101
    Capitol Hill Tool Library.
    Saturday, January 17·12:00 – 2:00pm

This event was found on sustainablecapitolhill.org/eve

Learn how to use the Baofeng UV-5R as logistical and security organizers at actions. We will outline FCC laws for MURS, GMRS, and HAM channels. Please purchase a radio beforehand if you are able.

This course will cover most relevant functions and operation of a standard UV-5R radio. UV-5R is an easy, accessible, affordable device of low/mid quality. Most radios can only transmit on a small, specialized range of channels (bands). The advantage of the UV-5R is that it can be unlocked to access many of these bands. This makes it the preferred choice for new radio operators.

Bands are defined by the Federal Communications Commission. We will cover two bands. MURS (5 channels) and GMRS (22 channels). If you bring your own radio, arrive early and the instructor will program these channels into your device. We will discuss best practice when communicating over radio frequencies and how to employ effective messaging techniques.

  6. I bought a cheap #Baofeng for my dad, a UV-7B

He wants to listen to the local #Skywarn repeater near him

I'm gently encouraging him to study and take the exam for the Technician license sometime over the next year (hopefully before July 2026, when the question pool changes)

I also have a book on order that I'll be giving to him for the holidays

I think he would enjoy talking to local folks with this handheld, he likes to "shoot the shit" already which will be good for rag-chewing, lol

  7. After the ham event at the weekend, I decided to make a few little upgrades. Today, I received a USB-C charging battery and TWAYRDIO RH 660S for my Baofeng UV-5R. I’ve also got a SignalStick en route. Bought BNC adapters for it all too.

Then in a couple of weeks we’re driving past a Ham Radio Outlet and I’m hoping to pick up a Yaesu FT-5DR.

  8. I solved my Baofeng UV-5R Mini problem - for good!

(Boy, was that shitty software) #baofeng #mini #turd

  9. My first #GMRS radios - Baofeng GM-5RH found a 2 pack with 3 antennas for each radio, 2 charging docks, and a couple of USB-C cables, and a programming cable.
I personally like drop in chargers, but I have a couple of radios now that use USB-C. So for me it's not to have either or.
The long antenna is a Abbree AR771 GMRS antenna.

These radios are probably the same as the UV-5G Plus - and look a like like my UV-K5 pro (Which uses the same battery from the looks of it)

  10. For some reason #baofeng can not break squelch of my #anytone on PMR466 frequencies. Only possible ways I've found are:
    1. Completely turn off SQL level on AnyTone (not an option).
    2. Configure PMR channels on AnyTone to use wide bandwith. Not the best option as well.

Baofeng bandwith is set to narrow but probably that setting does not do much.

  11. I just got my Quansheng TK-11 in the mail today. Initial thoughts that aren’t covered in any unboxing videos:

There was a power adapter taped to the inner box. The charging dock has an Asian power plug. Fortunately, I can charge it via USB-C.

This isn’t as heavy as my Motorola XTS 1500, but this has enough heft to be used as a bludgeoning weapon.

I love the circular lanyard connector!

I hate how fragile the rubber port covers are.

The T-shaped antenna is meant for the LF/MF/HF bands, but it has “0.153-18 MHz” stamped on it, so you won’t need it for anything about 17 meters. Set it aside. The rubber duck is very long.

On that note, you do know this can only transmit FM, right? You read the website before clicking Buy, didn’t you? That limits you to 10 meters and up.

It can receive CW on 2200 meters. Fat lot of good that does when you can’t transmit that low.

If you had told me this is my UV-K5 with the Ezgumer firmware, I would have believed you. It’s virtually identical, down to the fonts and screen layout. The blue backlight is your only clue.

Dear lord, the CPS is awful. It’s perfectly cromulent, but it’s missing simple things like copy and paste. That means if you want to insert a channel, you need to edit every single one below that.

The radio can receive on 33 cm and maybe 23 cm, but the CPS won’t let you program frequencies above 600 MHz.

Someone opened a ticket with CHIRP to support this model. They’re working on it. GOOD!

No programming cable is included, but your Baofeng one works fine.

  12. @Dave_Goldsmith thanks! ^_^

the baofeng comes with a belt clip, of course, but it's bigger and also more mobile so if I just used that one, it'd rattle around, and might even find a way to fling itself off. With this basic little slab clip, it should be held tight.

To the strength of the material, of course. But print in the obvious orientation and there's no really vulnerable layer lines, so it should be okay.

(or so I hope xD )

  13. Today I made a joke commercial for my newly designed & printed EXTREME Ham Radio desktop accessory for the Ultimate Net Commander. The "UV-Commander", a #baofeng radio holder for all those extreme social nets discussing ham radio and antennas and bodily functions! #3dprinting #hamradio #uv5r #prepping #extremeweather Also fits #vx6r #yaesu and #ft5 #radio

  14. Does anyone have a view on what is the best external speaker/mic with a Kenwood K1 for a #Baofeng or #Quansheng radio? A relatively inexpensive one - I know there’s a Kenwood KMC-45D but it’s a tad pricey (although probably very good). #HamRadio
