Now Northern California is the latest port of call for the 2025 atmospheric rivers series. And PG&E is so well not prepared for the power challenges ahead in these storms.

  4. Meanwhile in the Pacific North West, a massive atmospheric river has arrived. Normally this time of year, snow enthusiasts like myself are excited about all the snow that would be falling however the snow elevation is really high, too high to snow at the ski resorts. A series of flood watches has been issued, and while the weather forecasts are not always accurate this storm ain't looking too good for our valuable snowpack.

Here is a shot of Little Tahoma taken last week, Im guessing I was at around 8500ft/2600m which should receive an incredible amount of snow thankfully throughout the week. The forecasting temps are fluctuating daily but in general seem to be holding at around 7000ft/2130m. I attached a screenshot of the forecast for this area, which could receive several feet or about a meter+ per day! At least the glaciers will get some.

If you believe in snow dancing... this is a good time to get your groove on!

A flood watch is in effect for parts west. The screen shot shows the #NCwx low country catching it. There’s another slower blob of rain south of Richmond that is working over Tobacco Road.

An advisory was just sounded and put on the broadcast. I’ve not listened to it yet but it does include the Wakefield AOR inside the mesoscale discussion area.

Good evening to review your flood safety plan.

  10. Risk rises for #mudslides around #LACounty fire zones; prepare for worst-case scenario, officials warn

Alene Tchekmedyian, Rong-Gong Lin II, Melody Gutierrez, LA Times
    January 26, 2025

"With more rain on the way, officials warned Sunday of an increasing risk of mudslides in #LosAngelesCounty's burn areas, with a 10% to 20% chance of significant #FlashFlooding and #DebrisFlows capable of damaging roads and homes in and around areas devastated by #wildfires.

"'This is the worst-case scenario to prepare for,' said Kristan Lund, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

"'We do have increasing concern for the #BurnScars,' Lund said. The charred footprint of the Eaton fire, which blackened more than 14,000 acres, is the most worrisome. 'These #FlashFloods and these debris flows could happen in and near or below these burn scars.'

"A #FloodWatch took effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and was set to continue through 4 p.m. Monday for the burned areas of the #EatonFire in the #Altadena and #Pasadena areas; the #PalisadesFire and #FranklinFires in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu areas; the Hughes fire around Lake Castaic; and the Bridge fire in the San Gabriel Mountains west and southwest of Wrightwood. The flood watch started six hours earlier than originally anticipated as rain began falling steadily around Los Angeles."
