#California: ‘Seeking seed donations': The #Altadena #SeedLibrary looks ahead to #regrowth
Story by Alysia Gray Painter, January 13, 2025
"Following the Jan. 7 fire that swept through the city, growers and gardening groups are beginning to think about what is next, groups that include the Altadena Seed Library.
"This community is enormously dedicated to native plants, but also had many farmers and growers who lost generations of crops at community gardens and in backyards.
"#Wildlife coming down from the foothills has lost habitat and food. the air quality will be poor and temperatures will be higher without the lush greenery that protected us. not to mention the vast natural spaces that have burned and may benefit from help #reseeding.
"If you have seeds to spare — particularly native plants — please send a message. please share widely.
"Monetary donations are also requested, if you are able to donate.
"Seeds may be sent to 37 Auburn Ave. #8, Sierra Madre, CA 91024 c/o Altadena Seed Library."

The price mechanism 🥰 #CaliforniaFires #economics
”High insurance prices are how the market both signals that an area is a risky place to live […] When governments mess with insurance prices—either through subsidies, cheap public insurance, or price controls—the result is always the same. More people move to dangerous areas that are highly susceptible to natural disasters. (1/2)

Apparently the escape from that is to hold a position of power or authority: in society today, your conduct can be blatantly heinous and people will say it's really justified and you're actually a good person. Must be nice to go through life like that...

Any time I share my grievances about the Palisades Fire and how I have been victimized multiple times over (not just by the disaster itself, but by the response) all I get in reply is lies, mocking, ridicule, and flat-out bullying.

As many in the gaming hobby know, #boardgame artist Rodger MacGowan and family lost their home in the Palisades Fire this month. Two other fiends of mine (and fellow gamers) lost their homes in the Mountain Fire in Camarillo late last year. To raise money for those affected by the fires I am auctioning some board game related mugs on eBay. If you want to support Rodger directly there is a Gofundme campaign.

Risk rises for #mudslides around #LACounty fire zones; prepare for worst-case scenario, officials warn
Alene Tchekmedyian, Rong-Gong Lin II, Melody Gutierrez, LA Times
January 26, 2025"With more rain on the way, officials warned Sunday of an increasing risk of mudslides in #LosAngelesCounty's burn areas, with a 10% to 20% chance of significant #FlashFlooding and #DebrisFlows capable of damaging roads and homes in and around areas devastated by #wildfires.
"'This is the worst-case scenario to prepare for,' said Kristan Lund, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.
"'We do have increasing concern for the #BurnScars,' Lund said. The charred footprint of the Eaton fire, which blackened more than 14,000 acres, is the most worrisome. 'These #FlashFloods and these debris flows could happen in and near or below these burn scars.'
"A #FloodWatch took effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and was set to continue through 4 p.m. Monday for the burned areas of the #EatonFire in the #Altadena and #Pasadena areas; the #PalisadesFire and #FranklinFires in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu areas; the Hughes fire around Lake Castaic; and the Bridge fire in the San Gabriel Mountains west and southwest of Wrightwood. The flood watch started six hours earlier than originally anticipated as rain began falling steadily around Los Angeles."

How wildfires leave communities vulnerable to flooding, mudslides for years
#Wildfires of every size leave behind something known as a #BurnScar, or the area of land charred by flames and left devoid of vegetation.
By Brian Lada
"#Flooding and #DebrisFlows can happen with little warning in burn scars and most commonly occur during a heavy thunderstorm or major #rainstorm.
"'Rainfall that would normally be absorbed will run off extremely quickly after a #wildfire, as burned soil can be as water repellent as pavement. As a result, much less rainfall [than normal] is required to produce a #FlashFlood,' The National Weather Service (#NWS) said."

I've been of a mind to contribute to the relief effort: it makes me feel better than wallowing in a depression at my hotel. But I really wonder if I'm just wasting my time...especially since I have no friends, no family, and only a small amount of money.

They literally have done nothing to help me at any stage of the disaster. Even when I waited in line for hours to get an "escort" to go back to my house it turned out these illustrious "first responders" were fraudsters: there were no escorts. And there still is no access.

You know, online and offline I see so much "thank you, firefighters!". Yeah, thank you? For what!? Nobody lifted a finger to help me or gave a damn about me: up until the moment I witnessed the flames and bugged out I saw not a single "first responder" doing a lick of work.

New Fast-Spreading #Wildfire in #LosAngelesCounty Prompts Evacuations
Story by Ben Fritz, Victoria Albert, Alexa Corse, January 22, 2025
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — "A fast-spreading wildfire sparked in northern Los Angeles County, prompting renewed fears of death and destruction in a region already decimated by historic wildfires this month.
"The #Hughes fire, which broke out north of #SantaClarita in the Castaic, Calif., area earlier Wednesday, has scorched more than 9,400 acres and is 0% contained, officials said. Evacuation orders have been issued for some 31,000 people, and an additional 23,000 were told to prepare to evacuate.
"No lives have been lost or structures reported damaged in the blaze, which is being fought by some 4,000 firefighters.
"Castaic is a remote, unincorporated part of northern Los Angeles County with a lake that draws many visitors in the summer. It has a population of about 19,000, but is close to the city of #SantaClarita, home to about 224,000 people and the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park.
"At a press conference Wednesday evening, local officials speaking in front of large plumes of gray smoke said winds weren’t as strong as during the infernos two weeks ago, allowing them to drop tens of thousands of gallons of retardant from the sky. In addition, firefighters from across the U.S. and overseas have surged to L.A. this month and were able to deploy quickly.
“The situation remains dynamic and the fire remains a difficult one to contain, although we are getting the upper hand,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Maroni."

Just like with #PFAS-laden #FirefightingFoam, less #Toxic alternatives are out there, but expense is often cited as a roadblock. TBH, things that benefit the environment and society shouldn't cost more than the toxic originals -- and toxic chemicals should be replaced! Period! Make #BigChemical pay! (Since they probably knew about the hazards but hid them from the public. As usual with Big anything these days...!)
A #PinkPowder is being used to fight #CaliforniaFires. It's getting everywhere
by Nadine Yousif, January 13, 2025
"Its use has been controversial in the past over its potential effects on the #environment.
"A lawsuit filed in 2022 by the #ForestServiceEmployees for #EnvironmentalEthics, an organisation made up of current and former employees of the #USForestService, accused the federal agency of violating the country's clean water laws by dumping #chemical #FireRetardant from planes onto forests.
"It argued that the chemical kills fish and is not effective.
"The following year, a US District judge agreed with the employees, but in her ruling allowed the Forest Service to continue using the retardant as it seeks a permit to do so from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
"The case drew the attention of communities devastated by #wildfires in the past, including the town of #ParadiseCalifornia, which was destroyed by fire in 2018.
"Its then-mayor, Greg Bolin, hailed the judge's ruling, saying it ensures communities 'have a fighting chance' in the face of fires.
"The Forest Service told NPR that this year, it phased out the use of one type of #PhosChek formula - #PhosChekLC95 - in favour of another - #MVPFx - saying that the latter is less toxic to #wildlife.
"The Forest Service also has a mandatory ban in place on dropping fire retardant in sensitive environmental areas, like waterways and habitats of endangered species. There are exceptions to the ban, however, in cases 'when human life or public safety are threatened.'"

#FireRetardant #FishKills #Wildfires #Firefighting -
Just like with #PFAS-laden #FirefightingFoam, less #Toxic alternatives are out there, but expense is often cited as a roadblock. TBH, things that benefit the environment and society shouldn't cost more than the toxic originals -- and toxic chemicals should be replaced! Period! Make #BigChemical pay! (Since they probably knew about the hazards but hid them from the public. As usual with Big anything these days...!)
