Tuesday afternoon update on the Mukluk wildfire near Tok. Multiple homes have been lost and it’s too late in the season to rebuild. I’ve spent a lot of time in Tok and hope the community can come back from this.

6:00AM: 55F, overcast.
Our showers yesterday were actually real rain, although I don't know how much we received. The forecast has gone from showers to rain at the end of the week, so fingers crossed for the salmon!
Terrible fire in Tok yesterday. Several of my friends lost their homes. They will know more about the devastation this morning. Tok did receive 2 hours of hard rain that helped in the fire suppression.

7pm AKDT Monday update:
The current estimated acreage is now over 1500 acres, with fire spreading to the east and northeast. Multiple ground resources including engines, dozers and firefighters are implementing structure protection as helicopters with water buckets work on suppressing the fire directly.

5:45AM: 60F, light rain, fog/mist.
Woke up at 3 to the sound of rain. Showers continued for a couple of hours. Not a pour-down, drenching-type rain, so I don't think it will have much effect on the salmon.
But hope springs eternal.

Record high temperature for the second day in a row at Deadhorse (North Slope, Inupiat country). Through 3pm Sunday up to 73F (22.8C), breaking the previous record for August 16 of 68F (20.0C) set in 2012. Climate observations in the Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay area since 1968. @Climatologist49

Ongoing sea ice melt resulted in a big increase in low concentration ice and open water in the seas north and northwest of Alaska during the second week in August. Loss was especially dramatic in the Chukchi Sea, where after having the highest extent in 20+ years for most of July and the first days of August, extent is now below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

6:00AM: 53F, fog.
The fog is no joke. Last night it rolled in SO fast! The night flight in from Seattle had to turn around at Sitka and fly back. A little over 2 hours turned into 4 1/2. Not a fun time.
This morning the 6AM flight was outright cancelled.
John was out fishing yesterday and fought the fog the whole time. Fishing alone (mostly steering, running a line occasionally) is dangerous.
He's coming in today.

Sea surface temperature departure from from the 1991-2020 baseline around Alaska show increasing areas that warmer than normal in the Gulf of Alaska and western Bering Sea. Eastern Bering Sea still mostly cooler than normal. North of the Bering Strait, waters cooler than normal except areas that have been sea ice free for a while. Monday was a tough day when we learned that NOAA was ending support for the Arctic Report Card. Since then we've received many expressions of solidarity, showing the value of the ARC to a wide audience. For that I am VERY grateful. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Friday. Record high temperature for August at Juneau Airport of 85F (29.4C) capping off a very warm day, especially for this late in the season across southern mainland Alaska eastward into the southern Yukon Territory and northwest British Columbia. Also the warmest day of the summer St. Lawrence Island and Bering Strait. #akwx #weather

5:30AM: 56F, fair.
Sun today, high near 70F.
We may get showers Monday. Eh.
I'll enjoy what little precipitation we get, but it's not the full-throated rain that's needed.
No real rain for the rest of the week either.
