  1. Losing federal support for the Arctic Report Card has consequences beyond the bare facts. Losing leadership and losing unified info in an increasing chaotic world matters a lot. #akwx #Arctic #Climate

  2. High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Wednesday. Warmest in the southeast Interior into the Yukon Territory. Cool and rainy on Kodiak Island. #akwx #weather

  3. 6:00AM: 57F, fog/mist

Rain likely, then rain, rain, rain. Yay! 🥳 🎉

In honor of all the folks in Tok, who are experiencing the devastating aftermath of wild fire, I'm attaching a moose pic. This was taken across the road from my first house in Tok. I used to joke there was nothing north of us but the Arctic.

  4. High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Tuesday. Still warm in northwest Canada. Overall for Alaska, still milld but closer to normal than it's been for over a week. #akwx #weather

  5. 5:45AM: 55F, overcast.

"Rain" and "rain likely" as far as the eye can see in the forecast.

Once again, all is right in the world.

Hopefully salmon will soon be thick in the streams.

  6. Tuesday afternoon update on the Mukluk wildfire near Tok. Multiple homes have been lost and it’s too late in the season to rebuild. I’ve spent a lot of time in Tok and hope the community can come back from this.

  7. High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Monday. Cooler across most of Alaska except the southeast Interior, though still near to above normal in most areas. Hot weather returned to the Mackenzie River valley. #akwx #weather

  8. 6:00AM: 55F, overcast.

Our showers yesterday were actually real rain, although I don't know how much we received. The forecast has gone from showers to rain at the end of the week, so fingers crossed for the salmon!

Terrible fire in Tok yesterday. Several of my friends lost their homes. They will know more about the devastation this morning. Tok did receive 2 hours of hard rain that helped in the fire suppression.

  9. 7pm AKDT Monday update:

The current estimated acreage is now over 1500 acres, with fire spreading to the east and northeast. Multiple ground resources including engines, dozers and firefighters are implementing structure protection as helicopters with water buckets work on suppressing the fire directly.

  10. High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Sunday. Warmest in the northeast Interior into northwest Canada. Continued warm northwest Arctic with warmest day of the year at Kotzebue and Kivalina. Cooler and rainy in southwest Alaska. #akwx #weather

  11. 5:45AM: 60F, light rain, fog/mist.

Woke up at 3 to the sound of rain. Showers continued for a couple of hours. Not a pour-down, drenching-type rain, so I don't think it will have much effect on the salmon.

    But hope springs eternal.

  14. Ongoing sea ice melt resulted in a big increase in low concentration ice and open water in the seas north and northwest of Alaska during the second week in August. Loss was especially dramatic in the Chukchi Sea, where after having the highest extent in 20+ years for most of July and the first days of August, extent is now below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

  17. High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Saturday. Continued very warm on the North Slope with a daily record high of 71F (21.7C) at Deadhorse. Warm in northwest Alaska. Continued hot in northern Southeast Alaska into the southern Yukon Territory and northwest British Columbia. #akwx #weather

  18. 6:00AM: 53F, fog.

The fog is no joke. Last night it rolled in SO fast! The night flight in from Seattle had to turn around at Sitka and fly back. A little over 2 hours turned into 4 1/2. Not a fun time.

This morning the 6AM flight was outright cancelled.

John was out fishing yesterday and fought the fog the whole time. Fishing alone (mostly steering, running a line occasionally) is dangerous.

    He's coming in today.
