6:00AM: 45F, light rain.
Showers today, sun comes back Saturday.
Side note: This tourist season is much more stressful right off the bat than in the past.
PEOPLE! When you visit a village/town/city/metropolis....
🚨 CROSS AT CROSSWALKS! 🚨
Do not dart out to jaywalk and "beat traffic" or wander into the street and pause, taking picture after picture.
🚨 AK is in the 21st century...we have cars. Cars that can hit you and absolutely ruin your vacation.

Tis the season for the land to emerge from the winter blanket of snow. More and more of Alaska and northwest Canada with bare ground showing every day. Snow and ice extent analysis courtesy NIC/NSIDC. @anisian @Climatologist49

The Kuskokwim River ice broke at Bethel Tuesday morning (May 12). This is a few days later than the modern average but would been a few days early prior to 1980. The trend toward earlier break-up, about a week in the past century, is similar to trends on elsewhere in Alaska. #akwx #ClimateChange

High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Tuesday. Continued chilly Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. Very mild Seward Peninsula and most of Northwest Arctic Borough and milder than recent days in the northern Interior. Still quite chilly North Slope coast eastward to the MacKenzie delta. #akwx #weather

6:30AM: 48F, overcast.
After an especially gorgeous, sunny day yesterday (Yes - even this sun-grouch can appreciate a clear day now and then!) showers and clouds are back in the forecast.
Sun-lovers fear not! It's back in the picture for Saturday.

5:30AM: 38F, fair
The fact that the sky is clear hit home this morning when I woke up at 4:30AM to lots & lots of light....and my brain said, "It's time to get up!!"
Here's my annual grumpy grouse about the sunlit summer in the far North.
It sucks for sleep.
I said what I said.

High temperature so far this spring at Anchorage Airport is only 52ºF (11.1ºC). It’s been more than 20 years since a spring had a lower highest temperature through May 10. @Climatologist49 @EyeOnAlaska

6:00AM: 44F, clouds are breaking up a bit.
Showers today, clouds this week, rain/showers mid-week on.
In short, a Sitka spring...at least these days.

Sea ice melt continues apace in the Bering Sea with the total extent well below the 1991-2020 median. The most unusual feature is the persisting ice in upper Bristol Bay. This is the latest in the Spring with sea ice in Bristol Bay since May 2012. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

6:30AM: 47F, light rain.
We had a lovely November day yesterday and it looks like another November morn right now.
We sat in the rain and wind yesterday, freezing our asses off, selling baked goods and coffee, but it was worth it. 😍
John swears up & down we had a cold, wet, late spring last year also, that "we were robbed of May." I vaguely remember something like that, but if nothing else, I've learned NOT to trust my weather memory! lol

Fairbanks airport 605pm AKDT Saturday temperature up to 60F (15.6C) for the first time this year. This is more than a week later than the typical "first 60º" in the 21st century. Nonetheless, the trend since 1930 for earlier first occurrence by about a week is significant. #akwx #Climate #Spring2026

The temperatures dipped to -1F (-18.2C) early Saturday morning at the NOAA Climate Reference Network station at the Barrow Observatory north of Utqiaġvik. Later than usual for a sub-zero (F) temperature but it's nowhere close to the latest on record. @Climatologist49 @cinderbdt

Sea surface temperatures difference from the 1991-2020 baseline around Alaska for the week ending May 8. Eastern Bering Sea remains cooler than normal and recent storminess has cooled SSTs relative to normal in the central Gulf of Alaska. Western Bering and Eastern Gulf of Alaska remain warmer than normal. Data courtesy NOAA/PSL/ESRL. @Climatologist49

6:00AM: 49F, overcast.
It rained off & on last night and will rain off and on today.
At 9:00AM is the 33rd annual SE Alaska Women in Fisheries' (of which I am President) annual Fishermen's Flea Market. SEAWIF will sell baked goods and coffee while fisher men and women bring out their gear to buy/sell/trade.
But mainly is a fisher person BS session. The biggest of the year.
Same size as that fish that got away. 😉

Bare ground is emerging across Alaska and northwest Canada as the winter snowpack melts out. The IMS analysis this time of year usually runs a few days behind, e.g. low elevations in the Copper River basin are mostly now snow free, as is the Yukon River valley Dawson to Eagle. Spring river break-up on the big rivers in Alaska and the Yukon Territory is under way. A little later than usual and so far, no major problems, though there's still a long way to go. Details and the climate context of this year’s break-up in the latest post from the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter. @Climatologist49

6:00AM: 46F, overcast.
Showers, clouds, chance of showers, rain.
Rinse, repeat.
Happy dance from me.
Rinse, repeat.

Much of southwest Alaska, Interior and Southcentral areas were noticeably lacking in sunshine in April. In parts of the western Interior and Susitna valley, this was the least April sunshine since 1979. ERA5 Data courtesy @CopernicusECMWF and graphic courtesy @Climatologist49.

6:00AM: 44F, light drizzle.
Woke up to some lovely rain once again! Thursday looks to be mostly sunny, then kinda sunny Friday, then rain for the weekend.
See - THIS is equal opportunity weather. Something for everyone.

Ice went out on the Tanana River at Nenana Monday evening, extending one of Alaska's very best climate relate time series to 110 years. Although break-up was later than normal by 21st century standards, this would have been a bit early for the ice to go out prior to 1960. #akwx #Climate #Spring2026

6:00AM: 50F (!!), overcast.
We hit 60F yesterday, as predicted. I did not get out to see the booty short situation, but I can confirm none passed by my office window.
Klawock hit 82F. I believe that's "bikinis downtown weather" (female AND male), but again - I have no persona experience on which to draw.

2025-26 winter snowpack at Fairbanks is gone, with NWS obs site (UAF West Ridge) down to less than one inch snow depth, about 10 days later than average. This is the fourth time since 2018 that the snowpack survived into May. There's no long term trend in meltout date. #akwx #Climate #Spring2026

It might hit 60F today.
Time for the booty shorts to hit the streets!
(Not on me, never on me! 🤣 )

6:30AM: 45F, overcast.
Cloudy today, mostly sunny tomorrow.
A 4000 tourist day.
If I want to walk in Totem Park in peace and go to the grocery store and find food, I need to do both soon!

Sea surface temperatures (ºC) around Alaska relative to the 1991-2020 average for the week ending May 1. Upper Bristol Bay especially cool due to late season sea ice. Eastern Gulf of Alaska SSTs above normal with recent mild weather. Data courtesy NOAA/PSL/ESRL.

Lowest temperatures (ºF) reported during the 2025-26 cold season (Nov-Apr) in and around Alaska. Braeburn, YT -68F (-55.7C) was the lowest reliable temperature in the region this past winter. The low temp of -59F (-50.6C) at Glennallen was the lowest temp there since 1975. #akwx #Climate #Winter2026

6:00AM: 46F, light rain.
Woke up to the lovely pitapat of rain on the roof and looked out to see a foggy/misty morning.
I'm at the point in the season where I start cursing how long the light lasts in the AM and PM, so waking up to a wee bit of darkness was most welcome.
-
6:00AM: 43F, overcast.
"Chance rain" in the forecastable future, low in the low 40's, high in the low 50's..
Which means grey and cloudy. YAY!
-
5:45AM: 48F, light rain.
And rain it did....
Sitka got 1.31" in the last 24hrs. Only Yakutat, way up north on the panhandle, beat us with 1.54".
Still dark & rainy this morning, it will stop in the early afternoon.
-
6:00AM: 45F, overcast.
RAIN today! For once the central panhandle is projected to get the most precipitation. Could be 1"+ after it's all said and done.
As you all know, I'm here for it!
Mainly because I get to sit in my office and watch. If I was out working in the rain, I might have a different refrain. (See what I did there?)
-
6:00AM: 44F, partly cloudy.
Still headed toward actual rain Wednesday. Yay!
We are relearning to drive with tourists in town. it is not fun. The sheer number of people who stand in the middle of the street and force cars to drive around is flabbergasting.
Yes, I'm a tourist in other places, but no, I do NOT impede traffic while taking pictures of a stuffed bear! (Although the bear is wearing a plaid vest and earflap hat this year, so just maybe....)
-
6:00AM: 41F, mostly cloudy.
Rain is slowly creeping back in until rain is "likely" on Wednesday.
First cruise ship day went well yesterday...just 195 days to go. 😎 😉
