A #sewage leak of 20 million gallons of wastewater into a #ContraCostaCounty wetland could have considerable ecological consequences for fish & wildlife.

As Baykeeper executive director Sejal Choksi-Chugh explained to KQED, "When you’ve got a lot of this wastewater discharging in concentrated levels in an area like that, we’re going to see some exposure to chemicals that are in wastewater. That's going to have an impact; whether or not we see that impact in this generation of fish and wildlife or in their next generation is something that we would have to see." https://www.kqed.org/news/12016804/how-major-east-bay-sewage-leak-could-harm-fish-wildlife

Tara Duggan: Why the Bay Area is home to one of the most effective carbon sinks in the world: Dutch Slough, a restored wetland in Contra Costa County, stores carbon at a higher rate than nearly all other sites studied around the world. Here’s why.

"Dutch Slough, a restored wetland in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta near the town of Oakley, stores carbon at such a high rate that it is in the top 1% of thousands of locations studied worldwide, from pine forests to arctic tundra, according to UC Berkeley scientists who have worked at the site since last year."
