  1. The Sense of Fatigue

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Yesterday I went for a run and I struggled. The distance was four point five kilometres so it was short. I suspect that it's running straight after lunch that made me find the run hard.

Last night I felt fine. I felt like cycling today, and I hesitated between the group ride and going for an Ingress First Saturday event in Geneva. Now I find that neither motivated me this morning. I woke feeling tired.

I don't know whether it's for atmospheric reasons, given that the barometer is going down ahead of rain, or because of pollen as my immune system fights the pollen from two types of trees. I suspect that the barometer and pollen are playing a role.

I also suspect that the weather today, and the thought of a strenuous bike ride also contribute. I enjoy cycling but I like to be on top form. As I flit between sports I am not as strong a cyclist as some of them.

I also suspect that I have little to no desire to go to Geneva. Ever. That also weighed on me this morning. My desire to go to Geneva was killed by their desire to discourage cars. I also don't want to go to a population centre when I hear coughing, and people don't mask, or at the very least, use their sleeves to absorb some of the spray.

    And Finally

Yesterday's run was affected by running too soon after eating but today's is due to the slight decline in sunlight, and the huge amount of pollen in the air. And finally, if the weather was good and I felt full of energy I'd cycle to Geneva, participate in the event, and then cycle home. It's because I feel fatigued today that I question whether to participate. The joke of going to Geneva and back is 10 CHF.

It feels like a waste given that I don't feel one hundred percent.

  2. CW: Medical "fun"

Learned an interesting fact today... Its kind of common sense iff you have a persistent and powerful cough it can irritate your lungs but when the outside lining of you lungs become irritated it can produce sharp chest pains that don't seem related to breathing or coughing at all.

I've had a horrible cough for about a week or two with spells that last for a minute or more and cause me to get light headed or grey out (obviously POTS related). Last night it got worse to the point that I began vomiting and then started having pains across my chest and occasionally down into my stomach as well. Reluctantly I talked myself into going to the ER and after Iabs and X ray as well as (thankfully) 2L of saline that's what was explained to me.

  4. Sigh. After a week of me #coughing & going through tissues at a great rate, last night I #tested #positive for #RSV.

Me, being me, had never even heard of it.

Sigh. It’s just after 5am, let’s see what fun life has in store for me today.

  5. Simulating a Sneeze

Sneezing and coughing can spread pathogens both through large droplets and through tiny, airborne aerosols. Understanding how the nasal cavity shapes the aerosol cloud a sneeze produces is critical to understanding and predicting how viruses could spread. Toward that end, researchers built a “sneeze simulator” based on the upper respiratory system’s geometry. With their simulator, the team mimicked violent exhalations both with the nostrils open and closed — to see how that changed the shape of the aerosol cloud produced.

The researchers found that closed nostrils produced a cloud that moved away along a 18 degree downward tilt, whereas an open-nostril cloud followed a 30-degree downward slope. That means having the nostrils open reduces the horizontal spread of a cloud while increasing its vertical spread. Depending on the background flow that will affect which parts of a cloud get spread to people nearby. (Image and research credit: N. Catalán et al.; via Physics World)

Some people will see that it's running, and that they are still recovering and think "I'm not running in that. I did and my "short run" project was changed to a full run. I had planned to run two to three kilometres but ran five instead. The Apple watch wasn't happy, not with the running, but with the rain. It got a false tap and paused itself for 300 or more meters.

The rain was quite heavy. Heavy enough to get the trousers and the shoes wet, and heavy enough to get the hat wet, but not so heavy as to soak my core, which was quite welcome. The advantage of running or doing anything on a rainy day is that most people stay indoors so we have fewer people to avoid.

I am still coughing and still do not feel recovered, but yesterday I felt good. Today I feel that the cold is still lingering. I miss feeling good. I will not hesitate to mask in future.

Some people will see rain and think "No way am I running in this weather but I don't think that way. If you go for a run, or a bike ride you will heat up, and you will be wet from effort, so whether it's raining, or sunny the result is the same. The key difference is that in rain you'll be less salty.

I made sure that my core remained warm for the duration of the run. As long as the core is warm we're fine.

As I write this post today I notice that it's very windy today. I can hear the roof react as it's loaded with wind every so often. I can see that branches are swaying and I suspect that the lake is covered in sea horses today. If I had waited, to run today, then the wind would be my challenge, today. I'd rather run in rain, than wind.

I look forward to feeling well again.

  11. Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Sunday, less than a week ago I was on a train. I could hear someone coughing, and coughing. She sat in the seats a set of seats in front of the group of people I was with. I could hear the bronchial cough and I considered masking but didn't and now I regret it.

Over the last two days I have had a sore throat and last night I didn't sleep much so I chose to listen to podcasts with my eyes closed.

At Four AM I was meant to get up to run at 0530 but aborted that idea. If I had run in this state I might have been sick, and I would have suffered. It would have been nice to run with such a brilliant moon. I can try next year.

Some people might find it paradoxical that I consider this a victory. Usually when I hear someone coughing, whether in shopping centres, or trains, even outdoors, I mask. This time I didn't mask and that's a victory. It's a victory because I controlled my reflex to mask. It's a victory because it's normal to catch a cold every so often.

On the flipside if I had not caught this cold I could have run this morning in the moonlight, and tomorrow I could hike to La Dôle, and then on Sunday I could walk in the Canton of Geneva. Now I have the frustration of not knowing how long I will feel sub-optimal.

    And Finally

I see this as a pyrrhic victory because I resisted the urge to mask, which is great because I'm normal, but at the same time I could have avoided falling sick. Not masking in this context was absurd. I find the masks I wear comfortable. From now on I will feel more confident in masking in situations where I calculate there is a risk. Despite not being on top form I still managed to write a normal blog post today.

  15. Traditionally I am not one who suffers from seasonal allergies too much. I get a little bit of a reaction now and then, but generally speaking it’s not a problem for me.

I am working from home today and I have the windows in the room open. The landscapers came and mowed the lawn a few hours ago. Ever since I have been in mild allergy land. The lawn mower must have kicked up a few gigatons of pollen and shot it right through my open window right into my nose. I’ve been sneezing and coughing and my eyes are itchy and my throat is scratchy and my nose is running.

  20. Hey, remember that post from earlier today when I said we were planning the next two vacations already?

We’ve already scrapped one of them. California in the fall has been eliminated. We might do a staycation at that time, or maybe something short that’s close to home. The reason? The second planned trip, Florida early in the new year, is morphing into a major deal. We’re going to take the budget for Cali in the fall and roll it in to Florida in the winter. We have buy in from one of the kids. The other one will still be in school but might be able to come along for part of the time. That would be awesome. Awesome, I tells ya!

In other news that is also related to that same post from earlier today, I feel sick! My head cold was much better yesterday, then a little worse throughout the day today but not too bad. Around the time I sat down to dinner it decided to kick me in the balls and it got so much worse. I can’t breath through my nose anymore. It feels like my nasal passages have been completely bricked up. This sucks. Even worse, dinner went bad on me tonight… twice. Twice? WTF, bypassed stomach? Two bouts of the foamies complete with portions of dinner coming back for a return visit? (TMI, I know) All while being unable to breath through my nose? WTF, body?

The good news is, the first episode (or is it episodes?) of the brand new Star Wars show The Acolyte was supposed to be released on Disney+ about 23 minutes ago. I’m off to get my Jedi Knight fix on, kids! May the Force Be With Us, and our vacation plans, and my nose! Ah-Choo!

  23. @augieray

A news report about the widespread incidence of long-term coughing (8 weeks or so) following an illness listed several possible illnesses that might cause such a thing: influenza, sinusitis, asthma, and whooping cough/pertussis.

Not mentioned — *vividly* not mentioned, as in "elephant in the room" — was Covid.

That seems clearly to be denial at work.

  24. Reading Time: 2 minutes

This morning, for the first time in months I used Sleepcycle manually to mark the start and end of my sleep and I noticed that they added the Cough Radar. This is a quick and easy way of seeing whether there is a lot of coughin in the region where you live, or not.

I find this to be interesting. Governments are no longer tracking COVID and other diseases so we’re flying blind. With an app like SleepCycle current beta testing coughing nearby we have an interesting incite into how clean the air is, or how sick people are.

That’s because coughing could be provoked by air pollution. If there is a forest fire, or heavy smog then people will struggle to breath and air pollution will affect whether they’re coughing, or not.

If the air is clean then people could be coughing due to colds, the flu and other diseases. It’s a good way of establishing whether a region is healthy or not. It’s also interesting to see that the tracking of coughing has now been extrapolated and illustrated with heat maps. I won’t share the heatmap I see, for privacy reasons.

The makers of SleepCycle wrote about the feature here. By aggregating this data over weeks, months, and years policy makers can look at this data and decide whether to encourage mask wearing, air filtration and more. It could be used to track seasonal and regional changes.

There are four classifications. Normal, Elevated, High, and No Data. I am not clear whether this feature is available via Test Flight or the Premium version of Sleep Cycle for me. I used to be on the Testflight version.

    And Finally

This is a sleep tracking app so it tracks coughing within peoples homes, not out in the street or in offices, unless someone is tracking their office siestas. It represents active users of the app rather than the situation more globally. It reflects the health of sleep cycle users.

The worst part of being #sick isn't the #exhaustion, the #coughing #pain sometimes leading to a dry heave, the sinus pressure, the fevers, etc... it's the very apparent disappointment in others' faces when I say I won't attend an event. How could I ever expect them to tolerate any #unmasking I might want to achieve in the future? All while being fed BS about #DEI initiatives mattering and being important.
