  1. Saturday night sipper.

Cadenhead's Ardnamurchan 5, Oloroso Cask. NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.

Bags of red fruit and a touch of liquorice on the nose. Sweet, treacly mouth-coating, cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel. A slight savouriness.

    Young, vibrant and delicious. 🥰

  2. Popped into Tesco in town earlier for our annual #SingleMalt #whisky shop in time for #BurnsSupper tomorrow, I always go one peaty/Islay and one smooth/Speyside — doesn't necessarily need to be geographically exactly from those locations, it's more of a flavour guideline. I have a preference for the peaty stuff (I miss the days of Lagavulin 16 being easily available, and somewhat affordable) but for a whisky sauce and to go with the haggis I prefer the non-peated whisky, with the peated one for afters/"dessert".

It's funny how the Tesco/supermarket whisky range has changed in the span of my 20 years in the UK. It used to be many of the big classic "age" specified brands. Now days they're mostly gone and it's all weird special releases and a lot harder to have a feeling for what it is you're buying. When you like whisky but you only buy 2 or 3 bottles a year it's a little stressful trying to pick something out.

  3. Deanston 12 PX finish, NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.

Vanilla and hints of marzipan and orange, some green apple developing. Quite hot, a bit of water quells that. Spicy clove, liquorice and orange marmalade. Nice waxy mouthfeel and a lingering spiciness.

  4. Just a wee one, keeping an eye on my units.

    Whisky Advent #15

Deanston 8, finished in a Banyuls cask. NC, NCF, 55.5% ABV.

This ticks all the boxes for me! On the nose, luscious dark fruit, sultanas, raisins, figs, all coated in sweet, sticky black treacle, similar to a PX finish, only more so. That familiar Deanston waxiness brings dark chocolate, coffee, sweet caramel, spice and more rich fruit. I’m getting a wee hint of Haribo Happy Cola sweeties as well. 😍

    An immensely satisfying dram.

  5. Finn Thomson Glen Garioch 12. NC, NCF, 59.3% abv finished in Tokaji.

Slight ginger spice with wave after wave of red fruit on the nose: raspberries, redcurrants and sweet strawberries, like Angel Delight 😀 (a powdered dessert mix here in the UK). Citrusy orange hits the tongue which develops into sweet candied orange peel, caramel and a lovely dry, woody spiciness. A long finish of liquorice, spice and subtle grassy notes.

It is superb 😍 I get something different with every mouthful. A bottle that is unlikely to last long.

  6. Off to an event for Laphroaig tonight. I always say that I love it (and Islay drams in general) but it occurs to me that I've not actually had any in a few years now.

Will I *still* like it or will its briny iodine smoke slap me around the chops and poke a finger in my eye?

  7. A Bottle and a Friend

Here's a bottle and an honest friend!
What wad ye wish for mair, man?
Wha kens, before his life may end,
What his share may be o' care, man?

Then catch the moments as they fly,
And use them as ye ought, man:
    Believe me, happiness is shy,
And comes not aye when sought, man

Enjoy yer Burns Supper of haggis and neeps 'n tatties - all washed down with a fair few drams shared with friends.

  8. I like to take a photograph of every #whisky I drink and I keep a note of the ones that I like and the ones that didn't quite hit the spot. This year I have tried nearly 200 whiskies and the outstanding ones for me were a 14 y/o Glen Garioch from Independent Bottlers "Tri Carragh", a Deanston 10 y/o Le Panto Butt and a Teaninich 14 y/o from IBs "Fragrant Drops". The biggest disappointment was (whilst still an OK whisky) The Hearach.

A Happy New Year, when it comes.

    Most of these I have had in #Diggers #pub #Edinburgh #singlemalt #scotch #whiskey

  9. I was at a whisky tasting in #Diggers #Edinburgh last night organised by EuroWhiskey, a company, well one bloke, Harry, who travels around Europe show-casing whisky (whiskey) from small independent distillers across Europe. Tonight's offerings were from Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark and Finland. I took a few notes as I was tasting and these along with details in the photographs.

It was a good night, interesting, good company and there was some whisky enjoyment but that we had to finish with one closer to home might tell you something. None of these will offer a threat to the Scottish Whisky Industry, yet! 😀
