  1. A wee treat tonight.

Ardnamurchan Tokaji finish, NC, NCF, 52%, distilled in 2018 and bottled in 2026.

So much orchard fruit on the nose: bright green apple and pear, with hints of tropical banana and floral notes. Silky and rounded on the tongue, with stone fruit, sweet spice, a touch of saltiness and gentle oakiness. Lingering honey and peach, with a slightly peppery finish.

  2. Saturday night sipper.

Cadenhead's Ardnamurchan 5, Oloroso Cask. NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.

Bags of red fruit and a touch of liquorice on the nose. Sweet, treacly mouth-coating, cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel. A slight savouriness.

    Young, vibrant and delicious. 🥰

  7. A wee Woody's midweek sipper whilst watching Olympic curling.

The Scottish men destroyed the USA Team earlier, and two magnificent wins for the Scottish Women, gubbing the USA Team and then the Japanese Team, put both teams with a slim chance at medals.

Woodrow's Highland Park 7, Whisky Bar of The Year 2025, 58.9%, NC, NCF.

Finished in 1st fill Oloroso firkin. Orange peel on the nose with subtle almond and slight smoke. Silky smooth mouthfeel, chocolate, and mint. More citrus on the tongue, which lingers into a spicy finish of nutmeg and cinnamon.

  8. Friday night football and Airdrie face leaders St Johnstone in the Scottish Championship.

Fragrant Drops Glen Garioch 13, 58.2%, NC, NCF.

Fresh, bright and fruity on the nose with hints of cedar wood and vanilla. Wooft! What a wonderful mouthful: initially red fruit, especially strawberries and black cherries. Buttery, floral, and peppery, with a long, warm, spicy, oaky finish. 🥰

  9. Popped into Tesco in town earlier for our annual #SingleMalt #whisky shop in time for #BurnsSupper tomorrow, I always go one peaty/Islay and one smooth/Speyside — doesn't necessarily need to be geographically exactly from those locations, it's more of a flavour guideline. I have a preference for the peaty stuff (I miss the days of Lagavulin 16 being easily available, and somewhat affordable) but for a whisky sauce and to go with the haggis I prefer the non-peated whisky, with the peated one for afters/"dessert".

It's funny how the Tesco/supermarket whisky range has changed in the span of my 20 years in the UK. It used to be many of the big classic "age" specified brands. Now days they're mostly gone and it's all weird special releases and a lot harder to have a feeling for what it is you're buying. When you like whisky but you only buy 2 or 3 bottles a year it's a little stressful trying to pick something out.

  10. Deanston 12 PX finish, NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.

Vanilla and hints of marzipan and orange, some green apple developing. Quite hot, a bit of water quells that. Spicy clove, liquorice and orange marmalade. Nice waxy mouthfeel and a lingering spiciness.

  11. Feddie Single Malt Whisky

  12. Cadenheads Ben Nevis 25yo Authentic Collection, NC, NCF, 52.2% ABV

Packed with fruity deliciousness, floral notes, strawberries and raspberry jam. Complex flavours, citrussy notes which develop into sweet tropical fruit with brown sugar and spicy black pepper. Juicy, buttery finish with slight herbal notes and cinnamon. Lingering blackcurrants that go on and on.

    Simply outstanding.

  13. Advent Dram #23

    Cadenhead's Ardnamurchan 5, NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV

Wonderful sweet cherries, strawberries, red currants, and a touch of earthy dunnage. Rich, thick, and mouth-coating, mulled wine with cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, and more dark fruit. Jammy with a slight savouriness. Despite its youth and high ABV, there is no alcohol burn. It is beautifully smooth and quaffable. The cask must have been really active, as the depth of flavour and complexity is astonishing.

    This is a real beauty.

  14. Just a wee one, keeping an eye on my units.

    Whisky Advent #15

Deanston 8, finished in a Banyuls cask. NC, NCF, 55.5% ABV.

This ticks all the boxes for me! On the nose, luscious dark fruit, sultanas, raisins, figs, all coated in sweet, sticky black treacle, similar to a PX finish, only more so. That familiar Deanston waxiness brings dark chocolate, coffee, sweet caramel, spice and more rich fruit. I’m getting a wee hint of Haribo Happy Cola sweeties as well. 😍

    An immensely satisfying dram.

  16. Spent a nice chunk of time this afternoon divvying up our quarterly scotch group’s bottle samples. Selections include a powerful IB Port Charlotte, a 20yo Highland Park, and classic Glendronach 18. Darn good spread! Looking forward to tasting through these over the next few weeks with my fellow members.

  17. Friday night fitba and sipping this outstanding Geery from Cadenhead's

Cadenhead's Glen Garioch 11, NC, NCF, 46% abv. Sweet and fruity, plums, pears and lingering spiced apple. Subtle floral notes with a slight savouriness.

Difficult choice for the football: Raith vs Dunfermline in the Scottish Championship or Bayern vs Leipzig in the Bundesliga? Actually, no contest, it has to be the Fife Derby 😂

  18. I rarely drink anymore. A bonus that the whole range of emerging non-alcoholic beverages – beers in particular – has been a lot of fun.

When I do have a rare taste of something 'hard' that makes it a particularly special event.

#SingleMalt Scotch is such a treat! In decades past I've sampled a wide range of Scotland's best, and came to have a few particular favourites.

This evening it's a dram of #Bowmore. I've really gotta visit #Islay some day. Several of the best ones are from there.

  19. A quiet Sunday afternoon sipping this fantastic Deanston and browsing a music book about The Byrds, written by a friend.

Of all the Deanstons I have had, this is my favourite. Nine years in Bourbon barrels and finished for three in Pedro Ximenez casks. Probably not a first-fill PX cask, as whilst the influence is there, it's not overpowering the wonderful Deanston spirit.

Cask Strength at 58.1% ABV, and of course, no chill-filtration or added colour.

Chocolate, orange peel, and strawberries on the nose, with a touch of water releasing further aromas of dark fruit, including figs and raisins. Lovely and sweet on the palate with more fruit, along with nuts, vanilla and caramel. A beautifully balanced dram.

Just 2015 bottles were produced, and sadly, all gone now at the distillery, so I will sip and enjoy it while I can.

  20. Friday night drams and fitba.

Eight-year-old Deanston finished in Banyuls casks, a French fortified wine from the French/Spanish border, NC, NCF at 55.5% ABV.
Dark sticky raisins, sultanas and dates on the nose with wafts of liquorice and cola. Big flavours hit the tongue with more dark fruit, chocolate, treacle toffee, and gentle spice. Lovely waxy mouthfeel to finish.

  21. Monday night football and the friendly between Liechtenstein and Scotland. Dram to dull the pain, just in case Scotland play anything like they did on Friday 😩.

Tri Carragh Glen Elgin, NC, NCF, 55.5% abv.

More and more I am enjoying Port Cask finishes, and this 1st Fill Tawny Port finish is excellent 🥰. Not particularly
bold on the nose, rather, subtle chocolate, red fruit, floral and slight savoury notes. Juicy mouthful of dark fruit and caramel, citrus, almost marmalade-like. The port eventually comes through, sweet and sticky treacle, chocolate and cinnamon spice.

The whisky wasn't needed to calm the nerves, Scotland won comfortably😀
