  1. Good News Alert! Over a year now & the nation's first #traffic #congestion law is a success. #NYC's #cleaner, safer, faster (at least the #tunnel), and businesses are doing fine. Traffic's down 9% in the region and 22% in the #zone! #Bus speeds are up only 2.3% tho. $6B already in use, $15B total to come.
Op-Ed from #Environmental Defense Fund: traffic did not go up in S Bronx (plus fewer #trucks!), monies are going to area sick & to more trees, air filtration in schools.

  6. REVEALED: Swansea named worst for commuters in Wales as gridlock hits home

Shocking new analysis has revealed that the city has the toughest commute in the country, topping the rankings for average journey times, congestion, and slow traffic speeds across Welsh towns and cities.

The research, conducted by office infrastructure experts Co-space, shows that Swansea workers face a gruelling 26-minute average commute each way.

When combined with a 15% congestion level and average peak speeds of just 25 km/h, Swansea hits a chart-topping “commuter pressure score” of 19.7.

Over a full year, that 26-minute journey adds up to more than 215 hours spent travelling to and from work—the same as sitting in a car or on a bus for nine entire days.

The findings highlight a massive divide in travel experiences across the region, with Port Talbot motorists already feeling the pinch from a year of major roadworks. Motorists on Mumbles Road are also facing three months of lane closures for vital gas pipe upgrades.

Perhaps surprisingly, Cardiff didn’t take the top spot, despite having the highest congestion rate at 16%. The capital’s shorter 22-minute average commute kept its pressure score down at 9.7, ranking it well outside the top ten.

In our area, Neath and Ammanford both saw smoother runs with average commutes of 22 minutes, while Llanelli recorded a 24-minute average journey and a pressure score of 12.1.

William Sokes, CEO of Co-space, has warned that even small differences in commute times can have a “knock-on effect” on employee wellbeing and productivity.

“What’s striking about this data is how clearly Swansea stands apart from the rest of Wales,” Mr Sokes stated, adding that infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with growth.

The news comes as Swansea-based research programmes continue to look into smarter, greener ways for the region to move forward amid the ongoing climate challenge.

"What’s so frustrating, beyond the fact that money and time have been wasted designing a facility and lining up a site that in 2025, as we suffer dual #climate and #congestion crises forces most […] to drive to a new hospital […], is that it so obviously doesn’t need to be this way." @reece An Urgent and Avoidable #Transit Mistake in Waterloo Region.

  11. The amount of damage a late summer flu can do didn’t occur to me until this week… and my job is just as damaging.

I did not expect to spend two weeks trying to get over it and get back into shape, but that’s how it went out. Thankfully the chest congestion is finally clearing up… after taking a week to show up.

  12. The Absurdity of Commuting by Car

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Yesterday I drove to an event in Geneva and I parked at the P&R étoile. I went by car for a simple reason. I wanted the trip home to be fast and efficient. It worked. What wasn't fast and efficient was the drive into Geneva.

I left with at least one and a half hours of time to get to my destination but got to the event with just three minutes to spare. The journey time that takes half an hour out of peak traffic takes one hour or more during rush hour.

Part of my motivation for taking the car is that parking cost just 4 CHF for the duration, whereas taking the train would have cost 11-14 CHF. It made financial sense to take the car even if I wasted a lot of time in getting to Geneva.

Twenty Six minutes to get home, rather than an hour to an hour and a half justifies the traffic jam when getting to Geneva.

When heading to Geneva there is a paradox. If you leave early enough, the journey will be quick, but the wait will be long, but if you leave at just the wrong time the one hour drive takes an hour and twenty minutes or more.

That's why when hikes and other events are organised on the other side of Geneva I skip them. By this I mean hikes in the Alps and more. It takes as long to get to Noiraigue, as it does to get into Geneva.

In contrast the train is fast, and efficient. When I work in Geneva, especially if I pay for parking, I will not even consider the car. Why would I? It costs 30-40 CHF per day to park, and that's without petrol, electricity and other costs.

The A1 motorway is quiet today because people are not commuting or shopping. I thought that the pandemic had taught people to live without cars but that isn't the case. Their addiction is as bad as ever. The noise pollution is as bad as ever.

    And Finally

If you have to be at work from 08:30-17:30 it makes little sense to use cars. It makes sense to use public transport because you save time, and money on parking. As soon as parking costs more than the price of a train ticket it is rational to use the train.

In addition, by taking the train to go to an event, you can suggest a co-working session in the afternoon, to do some networking before an event.

Cars were liberating, a decade or two ago, when congestion wasn't as bad. Now driving to and from Geneva is a chore, which is why trains are so great. It's quick, it's convenient, and it is consistent.

  13. CW: M25 collision, Court Case + sentence

    An #Ipswich #lorry driver got 3 years jail + 3 years #driving
ban after lack of attention led to multi vehicle #collision with fatalities and serious injuries (the relatively short sentence is due to an early guilty plea).

He was not on drugs/drink or using a mobile phone, but if driving to South Mimms should have been aware that traffic on #M25 is often slow around that area due to #congestion and reduced his speed..#RoadSafety
