#Mucus is more than just a sticky substance: It contains a wealth of powerful molecules called mucins that help to tame #microbes and prevent #infection. In a new study, MIT researchers have identified mucins that defend against #AbbreviationsSalmonella and other #bacteria that cause diarrhea.

Should You Spit Or Swallow Mucus? Here’s What An Expert Says
Pustile Mince, seen here gallantly spitting mucus into a cup, and not on us.
(Photo by Bermix Studio on Unsplash)The Daily Isotope researched whether one should spit mucus or swallow it. In our research, we’ve reached out to Pustile Mince, a renowned mucologist and Ig Nobel Prize recipient, who works for The Mucus Clinic of America and Luxembourg.
When we’ve put the question to Mince, she explained “It is better to spit the mucus. Spit mucus finds itself in a hostile environment. I mean, unless you happen to be a champion spitter, and spit it right into the mouth or nose of a loved one, or a pet, or onto a Petri dish.”
She continued, “If you swallow the mucus, well, first of all, ew… What the fuck do you think you’re doing swallowing mucus??? Secondly, the swallowed mucus can organize itself in a colony in your gut, and foment revolution. Nobody wants communist mucus to revolutionize them, do they?”
She ended our interview by spitting mucus on us, as if to prove a point. Our research assistant, an immigrant, grunted while wiping himself, and mumbled something about “first-world problems.”

Microscopic marine organisms can create parachute-like #mucus structures that stall CO₂ absorption from atmosphere https://phys.org/news/2024-10-microscopic-marine-parachute-mucus-stall.html
Hidden comet tails of #MarineSnow impede ocean-based #carbon sequestration https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adl5767
"marine snow sometimes creates parachute-like mucus structures that effectively double the time the organisms linger in the upper 100 meters of the ocean. This prolonged suspension increases the likelihood of other #microbes breaking down the organic carbon"

This week for @Kitty #TuneTuesday @derthomas gave us a theme of "The Opener."
It probably was a local act like #Mucus #AgainstTheGrain or #BlueDirt in a venue like De Sloep.. not sure.
The first festival i've attended was #Waterpop in '93.
#RadioHead was the headliner, i rember watching #MTV that evening and #Creep was on.
A Dutch band that played (and still does) was #HalloVenray
#HenkKoorn is a big inspiration for my singing. Maybe that seed was sown that day? -

CW: Gross COVID stuff
It's amazing how much thick #mucus I can have in my #lungs. I can only imagine how the unvaccinated must suffer. Like, my lungs are still doing a badass job at breathing, but LORDY that shit never ends and might as well be made out of a DQ Blizzard shake base. 🥤 I feel bad for waking the partner up in a totally different room with my coughing though. 😥 Took more generic #NyQuil. Probably just going to keep taking it as allowed until this passes. I don't want to be awake for COVID anymore. I was hoping it'd be a bit less painful and I could get some #knitting, #work, or #gaming in since I can't work ... 😮💨😒
-
Someone sat opposite me on train this morning called their #GP. The person is #coughing their #lungs out. I can hear their #mucus in #chest, it’s that bad. They have had #fever. They can’t #breathe while talking. They just came back from a small nation in #South #Asia. What’s the likelihood of this being #TB? Their #COVID test has been negative for a week, everyday in a row.
-
@geewiz I think that it's pretty natural to do that (suppress a cough in public) especially in #CovidIsNotOver land. We want to do the right thing and we can't always know whether we're at risk of spreading something but I have to wonder whether suppressing a reflex has consequences and, if so, who might experience those consequences. #Mucus has a job to do in our airways after all and it's mobile for a reason.
