How is it possible to have such a rich and mind-blowing source material, 320 millions, and end up making a weak techno-toystory? How many times are they going to tell us the story of the empathetic robot?

Neurodivergents: *Quietly check watches* "I mean you'd be surprised."

"We had to learn, as a result of trauma. They may well end up having to do the same over the next month or so. I feel bad for them, I would not wish that on anyone. It would be nice if it made them a tiny bit more empathetic, though."

  8. They always had two consistent hosts each season, and a third billionaire they'd rotate. These would range in empathy-capability, but the coldest of all was O'Leary.

Of the consistent hosts, Mark Cuban was the most empathy-capable. I truly believe that he is not a psychopath. He'd argue with O'Leary and confront him when he was especially heartless. When a situation called for empathy, Cuban would step up. I'm not talking about giving money to terrible ideas out of pity, but just human connection when someone showed a human moment.

Often the women guest-hosts were likewise more likely to be empathetic, but not always. Cuban was the mot consistently human.

So when I notice Cuban in the headlines, he is often aligning with the left. He's one of the very few who, say, think people like him should be taxed.

But O'Leary? He is always the cartoon villain of headlines. I know for a fact that he is constantly plotting in a dark room. He even would rub his hands together right on camera, not attempt to hide his inner Mr. Burns.

And with what we know of Epstein now? He's probably already has his shock collar moment whenever he wants it.

But he can't have it on *TV* just yet. And he's still working towards it.

These data centers are essential to his plan.

  10. CW: *The Colors Within* / *Kimi no Iro* spoilers

Apologies for the stream of consciousness approach here; but here goes!

Pacing was brisk; few spots where it felt like too fast but didn't completely outrun me, good overall
The production itself felt really good at least on first glance, loved the lighting and shadows used in scenes, the subtle expressions were great; someone remind me to look at Sakugabooru later... :TamakoPray:

Character development of our trio was great, although not perfect - mainly that Kimi's (implied) crush for Rui didn't get explored as much as I would've thought at the start, and Rui didn't feel as fleshed out as Kimi and Totsuko; but I still love all three (plus Rui kinda me AND kinda cute ngl)

Sister Hiyoshiko's backstory came out of left field, but I thought her involvement was genuinely pretty good; the Catholic school element (including through Sister Hiyoshiko) felt.....MUCH more welcoming and empathetic. Legit kinda wished my own school was like that 🥲

I liked the soundtrack, both the incidental and the diegetic music; you can tell Kensuke Ushio is really getting into his element, with Rui getting good second-hand instruments including the Theremin and utilizing electronic elements.

Coincidentally, I watched the dub; it's pretty good, were a few times where Totsuko's dubbing felt a little awkward (maybe ADR?), but other than that everyone felt really good, I felt like all the VAs conveyed the characters nicely - works well enough if you (or your friends) prefer dubs over subs.

  13. CW: A good / happy dentist story

It wasn’t a fluke. Today I had a sedated dental cleaning and it was absolutely painless and my teeth are clean and I am not at all afraid to go back and at every stage the hygienist and I had hand signals worked out in case I needed her to stop (I didn’t). She has sensitive teeth too. She was the kindest, most empathetic hygienist I’ve ever seen.

I am so relieved to have found this clinic (and so furious I didn’t find care like this decades ago).

  14. CW: Amanda Knox and recovery from trauma

A long-form interview of Amanda Kox by Simon Hattenstone.

I never followed the case much in any detail, and I must admit that I probably thought her guilty at the time. Amanda Knox as a very young woman got falsely convicted of murder, much later that judgement was overturmed, then she got re-convicted, and only in one further twist was she finally cleared. Due to the circumstances of the murder, her person became a canvas for all sorts of projections, telling us much about prevalent fantasies and nothing about her. She is now 37, a justice campaigner, and she writes books and makes programmes on her experiences.

Simon Hattenstone has known her for much of this time. This is a thoughtful and empathetic piece about injustice, prison, the painful struggle to reclaim oneself, the slow and ever incomplete recovery from trauma. Worth reading.

  17. #BookBans jouez avec les #bibliothécaires
    littlefreelibrary.org/about/bo
Expanding access to #books is at the heart of our mission. The rise of book bans in America goes against our organization’s core values — especially when the bans overwhelmingly target #BIPOC and #LGBTQ+ authors. When these voices and perspectives are erased through book bans, our world becomes a less informed, less empathetic, and less inclusive place. #trump

    #Day7 Favourite character of 2024

    Ju Hye-Ri /Ju Eun-ho in Dear Hye-Ri

Double personality roles are always a difficult thing to pull for actors or actresses and #ShinHyeSun totally nailed it.

I'm baffled when the performance is so good I forget it's the same person. The character evolves from a cold and cynical TV announcer to an insecure and starved-for-love woman.

Her 2nd personality goes from extremely weird to honestly keen and empathetic.

  19. #PennedPossiblities 4/10
How do your characters want to be perceived?

Vic: Dependable and intelligent. Not that she isn't already, in her own way, just that others often just see her as a bit reckless with her tenacity. She just hasn't learned how to use it to project the image she wants.
Robert: Caring and empathetic. He struggles with expressing his care and his emotions. The people closest to him have figured out his tells, but it's new people that he has a tough time conveying that to.

  20. #WordWeavers 2025.08.19 — Could you imagine a story in the same world where your MC is the antagonist?

Yes. Of course. Antagonists don't need to be evil or villainous, and few of mine are. Also, my MCs can be dangerous (however you wish to classify that), and for those SCs who deal with them, they are often antagonists already. In the current WIP, the MC and SC roles are switched from another story. MC finds our former heroine mysterious, frightening, and very challenging to deal with.

The main series antagonist has appeared as the MC in a few stories. I'd argue she's as empathetic a character playing MC role as the antagonist role. She's always very challenging, even when weak and vulnerable.

    The Judge from Hell (2024)
    (2024 - Disney+ 14 1:10 eps)

Justitia, the judge of Murderer's Hell sends a non-sinner to hell. Her punishment is to go to earth & find unforgiven, unrepentant murderers & send them to hell. She meets a detective who could foil her plans.

Great special FX, fabulous outfits, fun & relevant OST, & good writing. A lot of violence, but it fits the rage &/or vengeance of the perpetrator. Park Shin Hye in her best role yet! She did many of her own stunts. Kim Jae Young portrayed a vulnerable, tortured soul brilliantly.

"What is Justice?" is integrated into the story, with everyone judging everyone. Who & how should judging happen tie it all together. As Justitia becomes empathetic to the victims' suffering, her understanding of judging changes. The director took a weighty theme, with suspense & drama, but made it fun at times, & even teased the audience - very well done!

  28. Legendary Actor/Author/Activist George Takei Named Honorary Chair of Banned Books Week 2025

Here’s the Full Text of Today’s Announcement From the American Library Association (ALA):

Pioneering actor, author, and activist George Takei has been named honorary chair of Banned Books Week, which will take place October 5 – 11, 2025. Takei will be joined in leading the annual event by youth honorary chair Iris Mogul.

“Books are an essential foundation of democracy,” said Mr. Takei. “Our ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’ depends on a public that is informed and empathetic, and books teach us both information and empathy. Yet the right to read is now under attack from school boards and politicians across America. I’m proud to serve as honorary chair of Banned Books Week, because I remember all too well the lack of access to books and media that I needed growing up. First as a child in a barbed-wire prison camp, then as a gay young man in the closet, I felt confused and hungry for understanding about myself and the world around me. Now, as an author, I share my own stories so that new generations will be better informed about their history and themselves. Please stand with me in opposing censorship, so that we all can find ourselves — and each other — in books.”

Mr. Takei is recognized as an award-winning actor, outspoken civil rights activist, social media icon, and New York Times–bestselling author. He has leveraged his popularity as a star of the Star Trek franchise and a social media influencer to advocate for several causes, including the rights of Japanese Americans and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

His award-winning New York Times bestseller “They Called Us Enemy” (Top Shelf Productions, 2019) uses both words and images to depict Mr. Takei’s childhood as one of 125,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned in concentration camps by the U.S. government during World War II. This graphic memoir has been targeted by censors multiple times since publication, most recently in Monroe County School District in Tennessee, where it was among nearly 600 titles removed in an attempt to comply with the state’s vaguely-worded Age-Appropriate Materials Act.

Mr. Takei’s latest acclaimed graphic memoir “It Rhymes With Takei” (Top Shelf Productions, 2025), which Publishers Weekly described in its starred review as challenging “Americans to look to how past humanitarian injustices speak to current political debates,” has not appeared on banned books lists yet. But the memoir’s depiction of Mr. Takei’s life as a closeted gay man and decision to come out at the age of 68 will likely meet resistance in places where state and local laws target the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ materials in schools and libraries.
In addition to Mr. Takei, youth honorary chair Iris Mogul will also raise awareness about censorship threats throughout Banned Books Week. Ms. Mogul is a Florida teen who started a banned books club in her community after the state implemented laws that resulted in the removal of hundreds of books about race, history, and sexuality from schools. Ms. Mogul continued her advocacy work as a student leader in the National Coalition Against Censorship’s Student Advocates for Speech and received an honorable mention from the Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards in May 2025..

Since 2021, the American Library Association and PEN America have tracked a sharp escalation in the attempts to ban books, with thousands of unique titles targeted annually. Books by or about LGBTQIA+ individuals and people of color make up nearly half of those titles. The majority of book censorship attempts now originate from organized movements. According to ALA, pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries in 2024.

Since it was founded in 1982, Banned Books Week has drawn attention to attempts to remove books and other materials from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Now in its 43rd year, the theme for Banned Books Week 2025 is “Censorship is so 1984. Read for Your Rights.” George Orwell’s cautionary tale 1984 serves a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship, and this year’s theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

Let Freedom Read Day, a day of action, will be observed on October 11. Everyone is encouraged to take at least one action to fight censorship — all you need is 5 minutes! For information about ways to participate and resources, visit bit.ly/LetFreedomReadDay.

Visit BannedBooksWeek.org for information about events, ways to participate, and promotional materials. Follow Banned Books Week on social media (@BannedBooksWeek on Bluesky, Facebook, and X, @banned_books_week on Instagram) for the latest updates.

    About George Takei

George Takei is a civil rights activist, social media superstar, Grammy-nominated recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, and pioneering actor whose career has spanned six decades. He has appeared in more than 40 feature films and hundreds of television roles, most famously as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek. He has used his success as a platform to fight for justice on a wide range of issues, particularly those facing the Japanese American and LGBTQIA+ communities. His advocacy is personal: during World War II, Takei spent his childhood unjustly imprisoned in United States incarceration camps along with 125,000 other Japanese Americans. He also spent the first 68 years of his life closeted, finally coming out as gay in 2005 to become a tireless advocate for marriage equality. His books include the autobiography To the Stars, the award-winning graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy, and the children’s picture book My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story. In 2025, he reunited with the team behind They Called Us Enemy for a new graphic memoir reflecting on his life on both sides of the closet door, titled It Rhymes With Takei.

    About Iris Mogul

Originally from Miami, Florida, Iris Mogul is determined to resist censorship from her state’s legislators and around the country. As a high schooler, Iris started a banned books club in her community after the state passed laws to remove hundreds of books about race, history, and sexuality from schools. She continued her advocacy work as a student leader in the National Coalition Against Censorship’s Student Advocates for Speech where she spoke and wrote about topics like book banning, political censorship in AP US History curriculum, and the failing humanities education in Florida. Last Banned Books Week, she joined the Miami bookstore Books & Books for their musical Sing for Freadom event!

Now a freshman at the University of California Santa Cruz, Iris finds joy in music, reading, writing, and learning. She envisions a life of working towards collective liberation for all people through the vehicle of fighting mass incarceration and criminalization.

  30. Concubine Android: These pleasure focused androids were among the most common varieties ever made.

Concubine androids survived into the new era in greater numbers than expected because so many passed as humans, or else belonged to a human who concealed and protected the unit out of either financial considerations, lust, or emotional reasons. In short, concubine androids of old were nearly always the property of an individual, not a government or corporation, and so hidden away and cared for, often because their owner had developed a relationship with the sexy, always attentive and empathetic machine.
