Hey, all, Massive Bookshop in Western Massachusetts is a volunteer-run online bookstore that exists to raise money for "bail funds, current and former prisoners, volunteer jail support and books-to-prisoners groups, and various other mutual aid and community-building projects." They do some pretty great work, including offering a 50% discount on books ordered for people who are currently in jail/prison.

Right now they're running a matching campaign to send even more books to incarcerated people. Below is the text of their new newsletter. Read at your leisure, and give them some support, if you're able!

Hello Friends,

We are long overdue for a report on our finances, which you'll find below. But before we get to that, we want you to know that it's WISH LIST MATCHING SEASON!

That's right; once again, in conjunction with Prison Banned Books Week (Oct 19-25th), all sales from our books-to-prisoners wish lists will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by a generous donor.

If you're new to this promotion, the way it works is mercifully simple:

1. You buy books from one or both of our two wish lists, for Great Falls Books through Bars and Noname Book Club's Prison Chapters. (These books are priced at our wholesale cost, so your dollars go further than they would otherwise.)

2. We buy the books and deliver them to each group.

3. We report how many dollars we collected from you, so the generous donor can make their monetary contribution.

4. Each books-to-prisoners group now has a whole bunch of new books, plus the equivalent in cash to spend on postage!

As both of the above groups are entirely volunteer-run, the cash they collect each year through this promotion goes a long way. And buying them books is a great way to show that you support their mission to get reading material to our incarcerated neighbors.

Indivisible Mesa's book club is taking on banned books this month. The fiction pick is Fahrenheit 451, and the nonfiction pick is How to Defend Books and Why by Danny Caine. Read one or both. The number of books dropped from school reading lists and public library shelves is the highest since the organization, PEN America, started keeping track.

Fueled mainly by conservative pressure groups and elected leaders at the school board and state legislative levels, the challenges to books target what opponents consider obscenity and themes that are too mature for younger readers. But books by Native writers that cover issues like race, social justice, and historical accounts that go against more patriotic portrayals are also caught up in the attempts to control what people can read.
