  12. This is sad. According to @nysfocus, the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility, which is New York's biggest #ICE detention center, has banned all #book deliveries. Rejected books have included an illustrated Spanish-English dictionary and “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work”.

Advocates are arguing that the book ban "violates detainees’ First Amendment rights".

  19. #Censorship #BAnnedBooksWeek #Movie #writers #libraries #Schools
Monday, the DC area chapter of the Authors Guild invited members to attend a showing of Banned Together. I feel enough stress for other reasons that I was reluctant to throw a scary, depressing documentary into my mix. Still, I needed to go, and to go despite being already tired and reluctant to take on the night driving.
It was well worth the trip. The story of the censorship campaign, funded by dark money, was disheartening. The story of the high school students, and parents and teachers and librarians, fighting and winning was heart-warming. The testimony about threats and intimidation chilled me. But the movie was crafted with enough uplift to make me happy I went, willing to watch it again on Kanopy with my sweetheart, if she chooses. (Our county library subscribes.)
After the show, we enjoyed a Q&A session with a producer and a researcher.
Thanks, Bethesda Landmark Cinema; thanks, Kanopy for co-sponsoring the production; and thanks, DC AG Ambassadors, for the invitation.
