    Cuando llegaron los ataques de los hombres de Cornelisz, por primera vez alguien dijo “hasta aquí”.

    Y aguantaron.

    Esa resistencia cambió el curso de todo.

    Meses después, el barco de rescate apareció en el horizonte.
    Pelsaert había logrado regresar.
    Pero lo que encontró no era un grupo de náufragos esperando ayuda.
    Era el rastro de una masacre.

    Cornelisz fue capturado.
    Y el castigo fue inmediato y brutal.
    En un juicio improvisado en las propias islas, le amputaron ambas manos antes de ahorcarlo el 2 de octubre de 1629.
    Murió sin arrepentirse, gritando y negando su culpa hasta el final.

    Sus seguidores más cercanos fueron ejecutados también: algunos colgados tras amputaciones, otros sometidos a castigos aún más duros.
    A varios se les rompieron los huesos como parte de la ejecución pública.

    Y luego está uno de esos detalles que parecen irreales: dos implicados, Wouter Loos y Jan Pelgrom de Bye, fueron abandonados en la costa australiana.
    Nunca se volvió a saber de ellos.

    El tesoro, en parte, se recuperó.
    Siglos después, nuevas expediciones sacaron del fondo del mar monedas, objetos y restos del barco.
    Pero lo más valioso no era eso.

    Porque el Batavia no es solo un naufragio.

    Porque en medio de todo eso, hubo quienes eligieron resistir.

    Y eso, al final, también forma parte de la historia.
