  1. I tested #bootc on a cheap #MacBook Air A1466 to solve "MacBook driver hell."

Instead of manually layering kernel modules on each install, I baked Broadcom Wi-Fi, FaceTimeHD webcam, and thermal fixes directly into the container image during build.

The project is just a Containerfile, easy to fork and customize. If you're running an A1466 and want a bootc rebase that works seamlessly, check out the repo: github.com/CleoMenezesJr/bootc

Tested covid + again, but for first time the rapid test indicator line was slightly faded. I'm going to tell myself that's because the virus is starting to retreat and that I may test neg soon. Note that when I test, I swab the back of my throat, both cheeks, and then nose.

Still slightly congested with a cough and intermittent headache , but I'm mostly sleeping through the night now (yay!).

Still testing covid positive. Same basic symptoms EXCEPT:

I've been careful not to exert myself as we know that covid+ patients can do more harm than good by pushing themselves. Needed to do some moderate physical activity for about 1.5 hours. By the end, I was nauseous with a headache because my BP had spiked again. I can only hope this condition is temporary.

Finally tested negative on rapid test and PCR test backed it up (yay!). I have returned all my things back to the bedroom and santized everything in my office.

Aside from the light, congestion, cough and headache, my diastolic BP is staying around 97 which indicates an increased CV/stroke risk. I'll have to continue daily monitoring.

Here it is over 3 weeks later, and I'm still dealing with congestion, cough, higher BP, and the resulting headache. My energy level and BP IS slowly returning. I'm back to work but I'm pretty wiped out by the time I get home. I still mask at work and in all public places.

Note that we're still seeing patients getting infected with Covid almost daily, just a regular part of our life in primary care now.

  3. Just tested my Prosody server against the compliance checker at compliance.conversations.im My Prosody server got itself a 100% compliance rating, with in-band registration being disabled as it's more of a personal server than a public one, even with that public conference. If you want to see the results for yourself, check out compliance.conversations.im/se I will also point out that both Prosody and CoTurn (which provides media relay services for Prosody) are configured to be dual-stack, meaning everything works both on IPv4 and IPv6. Even got all 8 SRV records configured in DNS so CoTurn's STUN and TURN implementations will hopefully work flawlessly, both via TCP & UDP (and the TLS-based option is included). #Prosody #CoTurn #XMPP #StandardsCompliance #OwnYourData #SelfHosting

  5. I tested a 10×2.7 mm ERM motor to measure its current draw at different PWM duty cycles. The results are shown in the attached graphic. For typical smartwatch use, this translates to ~0.35 mAh per day

  6. Just tested the #BTCPayServer connection to #CLN on a #Raspiblitz.
Easy as suggested in the help clues. It is all about the file permissions. Will make an entry in the CONNECT menu about it.

  7. I tested out a new cane (it's really pretty - purple with colourful flowers) & used my umbrella hat for our rainy day hike today.
We ran into 3 younger hikers with a super rad Aussie shepard dog along the trails & 2 of them complimented me on my blue hair. I responded with - I love colourful things! I'm wearing a mini circus tent on my head, as you can see! Then we all laughed 😂🤣

  8. I tested whether framing an #LLM as a "safety researcher" actually improves its failure analysis. In short: it changes the words, not the judgement.

The fun bit: there are 9 words that literally don't exist in the model's output until you tell it what kind of researcher it is.

  9. "Ai2 tested DataDecide across a wide range of datasets and model sizes, using 10 benchmarks to evaluate how well small models predict large-scale performance. The findings aren’t earth-shattering, but they present useful takeaways for AI developers and researchers.

For one, Ai2 found that small models (around 150 million parameters) can predict large-scale outcomes with surprising accuracy. Some benchmarks reached over 80% decision accuracy using just 0.01% of the compute compared to billion-parameter models.

Since small-model experiments use less compute than other methods, developers don’t need to run full-scale tests just to predict outcomes. “The promise of this work is lower compute costs during training,” said Pijanowski.

Ai2 found that scaling laws didn’t outperform the simpler method of ranking datasets by small-model results. Scaling laws, a more sophisticated and more costly testing method, aim to predict how accuracy improves with model size. For now, “just stick with ablating things at one scale,” advised Magnusson.

The findings should give LLM devs pause for thought, Hunt said: “There are scaling laws that have been derived from empirical studies between data volume, compute resources and performance. Ai2’s research points out that we may want to revisit some of those assumptions.”"

  10. Just tested the new coverage tool [1]: [1] is already 100% covered with the tests. :partyparrot:

In fairness, it is a very small program anyway, so it was more of an excuse to test the newly introduced feature 😄 .

  13. Having tested Tesla's Full Self Driving (Supervised) on greater #Boston streets this past summer in my 2023 Model 3, my finding was that the level of effort to be on guard to react and correct against the car doing something wrong, potentially very rapidly, is GREATER than the level of effort to just drive the car yourself. So, that high level of effort defeated the entire purpose of FSD.
Hopefully they'll eventually achieve safe autonomous driving in difficult environments like Boston, but it seemed to me they were pretty far off still despite a bunch of articles written by folks seemingly on the take from Tesla showing stellar results on clearly cherry picked driving scenarios.
This article detailing the results from AMCI testing more closely matches my FSD experience:

  14. #Trump tested the limits on using the military at home. If elected again, he plans to go further

“We have some very bad people. We have some sick people, radical left lunatics. And I think they’re the big — and it should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military, because they can’t let that happen.”

    By STEPHEN GROVES
    Updated 1:01 PM EDT, October 13, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — "During his first term as president, Donald Trump tested the limits of how he could use the military to achieve policy goals. If given a second term, the Republican and his allies are preparing to go much further, reimagining the military as an all-powerful tool to deploy on U.S. soil.

"He has pledged to recall thousands of American troops from overseas and station them at the U.S. border with Mexico. He has explored using troops for domestic policy priorities such as deportations and confronting civil unrest. He has talked of weeding out military officers who are ideologically opposed to him.

"Trump’s vision amounts to a potentially dramatic shift in the role of the military in U.S. society, carrying grave implications for both the country’s place in the world and the restraints that have traditionally been placed on domestic use of the military."

  17. CW: UR about families and death

I tested website content for people reporting details of a deceased family member.

One participant: "Just say 'died', don't use euphemisms." Another: "To show respect, make the text clear and the process easy."

The ethics review board adjusted my #research plan: Must provide participants with a list of counselling resources. (I chose to make this available to the #study's #observers too.)
