Il vecchio desktop Unity di Ubuntu torna in una veste moderna grazie a Wayfire e Libadwaita. Un esperimento che riaccende la nostalgia Linux. #Ubuntu #Linux #Wayfire #GNOME #OpenSource

from the ubuntu discourse post where unity-team was looking for contributors: saw a comment suggesting the the idea of using wayfire as a wayland base, makes sense given how closely it mirrors what compiz did under the hood.
experimenting that this week using gtk4-layer-shell+libadwaita with some blur. first thing I tried: top panel and minimal dash/launcher
I'm impressed with how it looks but I think the team plans to move to lomiri with mir

Cool! Neue #wayfire Version. Bei Gelegenheit mal testen.
https://github.com/WayfireWM/wayfire/releases/tag/v0.10.0 -
Question for the #linux peeps around here: how hard would it be for someone to get a distro running with a presentable desktop running #wayfire?
Raspberry Pi had a x86 version, but that was back on the Debian 11 era...
It would be nice to have something like #alpinelinux with Wayfire on top, should make for a fairly small and lightweight option for older/simpler machines, no?

@MartinaNeumayer @Linux
From the little I've seen and heard, #Wayfire is basicly the wayland spiritual successor to #Compiz -
#LXQT apparently now has a #wayland session component that is able to choose between #Labwc, #KWin, #Wayfire, #Hyprland, #Sway, #River and #Niri as back-ends.
I have no idea how they made that work but it's super interesting.
It's somewhat of a reversal of how it was with #Xorg where there was one display server and many window managers while there are now many display servers with one meta-window manager.

Further experimentation with Wayfire: swaylock works if you enable the
session-lockplugin in wayfire.ini, and apps can pop other apps to the top (like clicking links in an e-mail app moving the web browser up) if you enable thexdg-activationplugin.Uh, good these are available, absolutely wild they are not defaults. Only found them by accident searching the Wayfire documentation trying to figure out how to get Wayland app ids for programs, a thing that of course has no consistent ways to do it across Wayland compositors because lol Wayland.

Raspberry Pi OS improves touchscreen support and now uses Wayland by default
Raspberry Pi OS is a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution that’s developed by the Raspberry Pi team and designed to run on the company’s single-board computers. The latest version brings a big change that causal users might not even notice: it uses the labwc Wayland compositor by default on all Raspberry Pi models rather than the wayfire compositor or X Window system.
There’s also a smaller […]

#Wayfire 0.9 is out and with it wf-shell 0.9 is also out. I think the menu size now gets set at runtime if you change it so you don't have to log out and back in, as there's a change that someone made to fix it. Glad it didn't get left in the state I left it in because I didn't know how to get it to update.

Just found out #Wayfire is in Alpine's Testing repo.
