I wrote an email to the #Supermicro support asking if it would be possible to get resizable BAR support for the H11DSi motherboard as that appears to be the only way to actually fix this hardware issue here at its root.

(solved) Can you start kwin on NixOS without the drm component?

It appears the H11DSi mainboard from super micro doesn't have resizable BAR support and therefore the xe and xedrmfb driver get unhappy.

When I "systemctl stop display-manager.service" I get the blinking curser in the top right. But as soon as it starts the monitor looses signal and the logs show:

I'm currently facing some troubles with my laptop, in which #kwin is causing some trip-ups in the #amdgpu driver with panel self refresh apparently.

The internal screen freezes, but the machine still responds to input — I'm just not seeing it on the machine itself. Inspecting processes via SSH shows it's still launching applications when I invoke certain key combinations. Connecting an external display and disconnecting it again restores normal operation. Only issue is that still leave the machine inoperable once I can't do that, which completely disqualifies it for on-the-go usage. A laptop I can't use on the go is pretty much useless.

Searching online for clues how to work around the issue has been fruitless. There's apparently some #linux kernel command line parameters to turn PSR off, but the issue persisted.

I replaced the #Arch install on my laptop with #Fedora for now, as it stopped the issue from occurring. My best guess at the moment is a regression somewhere in the 6.18 line. Fedora 43 ships with 6.17.1 and updates to 6.18.8. Arch currently ships 6.18.7, and the system was working properly before doing regular system upgrades. A complete reinstall of Arch also did not fix the issue, solidifying my belief it could be a kernel regression. So until Arch updates to a more recent kernel, Fedora it is, as I'd much prefer my laptop to not be a paper weight.

Reminds me of when I would configure #KWin to blur, and configure QT to have a transparent background. It was pretty, but not well-integated. I'm sure this could be better :)

Recently switched from an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT to a Gigabyte Radeon 9070 XT Gaming OC.
I’m observing this visual 'bug' when simply moving wobbly windows around in #KDE #Plasma #Kwin: In about 1/5 of my movings, there is a significant lag. Monitoring GPU frequency via #LACT shows a sudden *drop* in frequency, rather than an increase like in the cases when the moving is rendered without lag.

Is this an #AMDGPU scheduler bug? A firmware issue? A Kwin bug?

I received confirmation via the KWin IRC/Matrix that my understanding of the input event filters is correct, so I went ahead and hacked/debugged more. I'm pretty sure the reason 4 finger gestures weren't 'working' is because computers are fucking fast and the current logic in KWin basically ignores 'extra touches' when a swipe or gesture is already happening on the touchscreen. This makes sense, but the logic runs so quickly that I am accidentally starting a swipe gesture when my first 3 fingers hit the screen before the fourth finger can, so nothing happens. I played around with the logic a bit to confirm that was the case, and indeed, I can get it to cancel the existing swipe gesture and potentially start a new one once the fourth finger hits. Now I can pretty reliably do a four finger swipe on the touchscreen!

I hacked it such that the touchscreen and touchpad gestures are 1:1 so that's how I've been testing. It's not perfect logic and I suspect that if the distance parameter isn't satisfied, we won't want to cancel the existing swipe gesture, but now I'm asking in the chat what the best way to go about getting input and feedback on this is: make a PR? Make an issue, link to the (not yet uploaded) branch? Etc.

Wo ist "Fenster zeigen" / "Show windows" in #KDE #Plasma 6.4 hin? Es ist aus der Effekte-Liste von #Kwin verschwunden! Der manuell auf Maustasten gescriptete D-Bus-Befehl funktioniert noch, aber die Tastenkürzel nicht.

Ich brauche Tastenkürzel für
1) Alle Fenster
2) Fenster des aktiven virtuellen Desktops
3) Fenster der aktiven Anwendung

"Raster" fehlt auch! Funktioniert aber ebenfalls noch über D-Bus.

I mean, I appreciate that there's a DE tailored for people who've never used a COMPUTER before. I used to laugh at that and say that there's no such animal, but nowadays, plenty of young folks have been inculcated in iBrainrotOS and honestly do NOT know how to use a computer.

But when your apps force your narrow viewpoint on me when running in KDE (particularly CSDs), absolutely kindly go make love to thyself.

I'd much rather that #KWin forced a titlebar on top of the CSD apps. I don't care if that looks ridiculous; it SHOULD be ridiculous.

Notably #TinyDM #DisplayManager used by #PostMarketOS, doesn't appear to have any updates in the repository for a year. #EnlightenmentWM #WindowManager has activity in the repository, but no new release for a year. #KWin #WM has newer releases, hopefully #AlpineLinux 3.21 (in days/weeks) will have a newer version.

@hoergen not exposed as button on the desktop, but the work on #systemd user session units for all #KDEPlasma components and apps lays the groundwork for this kind of prioritization, where certain tasks will only get resources if they aren't needed by any other etc.,
This allows for foreground tasks like #kwin to be always snappy while background tasks like #Baloo only get what's left over etc.

#Kwin on #Wayland with Wayland clients is the smoothest UI experience I've ever had, except for #WindowsPhone . It's way faster than X. Before now I thought DWM.exe on destop #Windows was as smooth as a compositing desktop window manager server could be, but it's not. #Xwayland will have major issues on #Nvidia until next week, though. Driver 555 should fix the flickering since it adds explicit sync support, but there could be more stuff to do.

There were still problems running #kde #programs such as #konsole and #korganizer as some #qt #libraries were missing. Installing those allowed the programs to run. Also, no #audio devices were being detected and so I couldn’t play any clips, etc.

Today I found that #kwin was also lacking a library (#qtsensors) and so after that was installed and I rebooted the machine, I found that sddm was working again and so I could log in to the #kde session that I usually do.

Today was a bad day for Linux Gaming, at least for me.

1. I wanted to play DCS: World with head teacking like always
2. My system stopped recognising my Oculus Rift CV1 sensors, throwing all sorts of USB errors in dmesg
3. I switched to the linux-lts kernel, which caused even more problems with the GPU. The graphical environment never showed up.
4. Back on the regular linux kernel, I settled for a phone strapped to my head for head tracking.
5. After two hours of gameplay, KWin crashed and failed to restore my open applications including the game.

I'm done for tonight. 😩

Since the tilling projects on kde/plasma started, it's nice to see that bismuth is actually kinda nice nowadays. The Stair Layout is something I never expected to work so well for me. Borders being broken is an issue, but just change to the Oxygen borders and it works.
