KDE celebrates its 30th year anniversary with the release of Plasma 6.8!

Starting from today, KDE celebrates its 30th year anniversary, which marks the long journey of the desktop environment that started with the very first version of KDE in 1996. With the release of Plasma 6.8, it brings lots of new features, as well as enhancements to your overall desktop experience.

To celebrate this huge milestone, the KDE team has also hinted at a documentary about this celebration, called The Story of Free Software Underdogs, which would be out on October 14th at 5:00 PM GMT.

This version of KDE Plasma brings the following features:

• Dwell clicking for better accessibility
• Bilram Sambat calendar in the digital clock
• Amharic language in the on-screen keyboard
• Assigning CPU affinity to different processes
• Easier monitoring of the video RAM usage
• Much better performance and quality for remote desktop connections
• Bi-directional clipboard synchronization for remote desktop connections
• Screen casting now allows you to use both your microphone and the system audio
• Third-party app Windows now look nicer, such as Steam
• Theming system has also been improved with the beta release of Union
• Wayland has been fully adopted
• Plasma now loads faster while using less memory
• …and so much more to come

To upgrade KDE Plasma, use your package manager that comes with your distribution to install the latest versions of KDE packages, such as sudo pacman -Syu for Arch Linux or sudo apt update ; sudo apt dist-upgrade for Debian and its derivatives. Please note that some distributions may take a long time to provide KDE Plasma 6.8 packages, depending on the update policy, so you’ll have to be patient.
