Colorado exempted open-source operating systems from 2028 OS-level age-verification rules, shielding Linux installs from mandatory checks. 🔓
California may add similar language before rollout, while Linux OEMs warn account-age mandates could pressure smaller vendors and user privacy. 🐧🔗 https://fossforce.com/2026/05/the-quiet-clause-that-may-save-linux-from-age-verification-laws/

#System76 released COSMIC Epoch version 1.0.12 yesterday, adding several minor improvements to the burgeoning #Linux desktop environment.

As someone that regularly tests the Cosmic desktop, I have to agree, it's still just beta software and shouldn't be advertised as stable, even though the 1.0 version has been released.
I do like Cosmic, it has great potential, but misleading users just hurts the reputation of Cosmic, #popos and #system76

System76 Pangolin Pro is a 3.6 pound Linux laptop with a 16 inch screen and Ryzen AI 7 350
The new System76 Pangolin Pro is a Linux laptop with a 16 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel, 165 Hz matte LTPS display, an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 “Krackan Point” processor. Compared with the previous-gen Pangolin laptop, that processor upgrade along might be enough reason to call this a “pro” model. But it also has a few other improvements.
Among other things, the new model has a bigger battery, a 2.5 GbE […]

System76 founder Carl Richell says Colorado’s SB26-051 may be amended to exempt open source software, including OSs, repos, and containers. 🏛️
The change follows advocacy, but wider state and federal proposals still risk verification rules that could limit open access and user control. 🔐🔗 https://itsfoss.com/news/colorado-age-attestation-bill-open-source-exemption/

@komali_2 @ineemio @mttaggart Maybe we need to persuade Valve to do so.
Random, but anyone up to developing an inverse Kickstarter? (Maybe call it something like "Chip In," since "chip" is kinda like "pitch" backwards?) Imagine a non-profit service where members can pool funds for a federated RFP for something we want which the market is failing to offer, and if enough funds are authorized, vote on bids, and if a bid is elected, loan the winning bidder with a contract that forgives the loan upon fulfillment. Or something like that.
RFP: unbrickable owner-repairable and -upgradable laptops to compete with Framework models; no Nazi collaboration allowed. (Maybe #Valve or #System76 would win this bid.)
RFP: owner-repairable athletic earbuds with user-replaceable batteries and unbrickable flashable firmware. (Maybe #UNA or #Fairphone would win this bid.)
RFP: independently installable ICE-to-BEV conversion kits for rural drivers with large temperature ranges, mountain passes, and inadequate local transit; must be finance-able for less than the monthly cost of gas. (I have no idea who'd win this.)
And so on. But back on topic: anyone know anyone at Valve or System76?

I just noticed that #CosmicDE screenshots now save to a screenshots directory in the pictures directory rather than just in pictures.
A small but good change. I like it as it keeps the directory clean.

After nearly 2.5 years of daily use, the battery in my #system76 Lemur Pro (lemp12) was running about 50% capacity, so I decided it was time to replace. I ordered a replacement directly from System76, and while it cost a bit more, I'm more confident it's not a fake that will burn my house down, plus I'd rather support a small business than the billionaire corporations. The hardest part of installing was getting the old battery out - it had perhaps a bit too much foam tape holding it in - but their recommendation of using a credit card as a knife, plus using dental floss to cut the foam from both sides, worked pretty well. Otherwise it was easy, and now I'm back to 8-10 hours of battery life.

Wayland is pretty quick on @system76 's Cosmic desktop. Faster. I did lose a bunch of xdotool custom keyboard shortcuts, but wtype works fine as a substitute. If you update, screenshot and save your shortcuts first, so you can rebuild 'em.

System76, instead of worrying about how to comply with Age Verification laws on it's Linux system, is going to the source and fighting back against the laws, to urge Lawmakers to exclude open-source software from those mandates all-together!
-
#System76's Carl Richell laying out the realities of the new age verification laws in #Colorado and #California: https://blog.system76.com/post/system76-on-age-verification
"Most System76 employees installed operating systems and created accounts on their computer when they were under 18. They did this out of curiosity. Many started writing software. Some were already writing operating systems. [...] Limiting a child’s ability to explore what they can do with a computer limits their future."
