Looked up some old videos of Compiz and the infamous desktop cube running on very old versions of Ubuntu. Wobbly windows, burn, ice, so many cool effects! I think this was back in Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, and 10.04.

Whatever happened to all of that? It rocked. Here we are 16+ years later...why don't we have it anymore?

What a useless feature.

Visual effects like this aren't simply eye candy, they're mentally beneficial.

For instance, this "burning" effect of closing a desktop window gives a satisfying feeling of finality (closure) with whatever task I was handling in it, freeing up my mind and allowing more focus to the next thing.

Emulating a physical action (such as burning) ties in the real world to a digital action, which Apple for instance knows very well is extremely valuable to the experience of the user, who happens to be meatware (READ: a human).

There are a plethora of newer DE, windows manager, Wayland etc...

But nothing compare with #Gnome2 + #Compiz, for this reason I use #Xfce and #WindowMaker; all the rest is boring...

I remember how Canonical's Unity (despite its flaws) had a feature (maybe it was just part of #compiz (oh compiz! I forgot! So much fun!)?) where the titlebar would turn into a menubar when you hovered over it (IIRC). Unity was so pretty. If only it wasn't so buggy. (It was so bad it was the reason I [temporarily] left Linux as a kid.)

(I wish parentheses worked in spoken language like they do in text lol)

I know this is stupid, and I know this is simple, and I know that #Compiz had this over a decade ago, but to have a #KDE #window I'm working in #explode into a bajillion pieces when I close/ exit the window is just so damn satisfying. I've missed shit like this. Yes it's superficial. I don't care. I like eye candy!

Desktop environment #Cinnamon is the perfect compromise between Xfce, KDE Plasma, Gnome, and Budgie. It's fast, user friendly for both ex Windows/Mac users, while still offering a wide variety of immediately useful features without being overwhelming. It doesn't come with bloat software as well. Intuitive, clean, remarkably satisfying to use.

#Budgie comes second as the #hotcorner feature doesn't work by default on #ArchLinux.

Had to find a #Compiz alternative; latest update was in Aug 2022.

Oh man, I used to use urxvt back in the day (circa 2020-2) because it had a great classic "fake transparency*" mode that I was missing with other terminals.

* Fake transparency just reproduces the part of the root window (wallpaper) directly underneath the terminal window as its own background and applies a tint. It's how we did transparent windows back in 2000 a few years before compositors like #Compiz. It's "fake" transparency because as soon as there was another window underneath the terminal window, the illusion melted away.

Там не всё показано. Куб можно сделать полупрозрачным: через ближайшую грань будут видны другие грани под соответствующими углами. Куб можно наклонять вверх-вниз: и видеть все грани с обратной стороны. Видеокарта у меня слабенькая (GeForce GT 710 954Mhz 1024Mb), а памяти, когда я использовал #Compiz, было 4 ГБ (сейчас 16).

@akaremii Рабочий стол выбирают по ощущениям. IMHO, #KDE нравится любителям украшательств. Вы видели #Compiz и #Beryl? Я когда-то давно поставил, посмотрел на сгорающие окна и куб рабочего стола, а через несколько дней снёс — день-два восхищает, дальше приедается, продолжая неслабо потреблять оперативную память.

IMHO, в технике полезно применять принцип «конструкции вместо стилей, расчёт суровый гаек и стали» (#Маяковский).

AFAIK, название среды рабочего стола #MATE не английское, а испанское.

I wish KDE’s Desktop Cube actually had feature parity with Compiz’s, but KDE’s isn’t useful at all for more than just looking fun in front of friends…

I desperately need to move to wayland but of course no existing WM/DEs fit my needs and I keep procrastinating making my own…

So I think it was the windows manager and #compiz causing the issue. I switched back to metacity+compositing and that seemed to fix the issue I was having.

I'm not sure what I changed in compiz to cause the problem.

Anyway, All seems good now.

Is it just me, or did #Brave browser change how it pops up things like save file, or browse to upload a file.
I have to minimize the brave window, then open it back up to see either now.
There was a Brave update yesterday, I think, I didn't notice the change then.
I also changed my windows manager to #compiz
I played around with a few settings there, so I'm not sure if that has caused an issue, I guess the way to check would be go back to the old manager...

if you're wondering btw, GNOME 2 + Compiz lives on! MATE is apparently planning to implement Wayland support using Wayfire, which is essentially the Compiz successor for Wayland. I believe LxQt is also going for Wayfire as well?

Sure, you have hundreds of compositor effects and settings and stuff… But you can’t even choose the panel’s background opacity?

If you use window rules for that you’ll change not only the background opacity but also all the icons and stuff, AND you’ll also do that to all panels instead of just one. And you can’t keep the panel always floating either.

Still WAY better than #Gnome, sure, but not good enough for me to ditch #XFCE plus #Compiz

e niente mi è successo nuovamente!! mi sembra di essere tornato ai tempi di #compiz e #gnome2 un viaggio nel tempo, ho installato una #endevouros senza desktop manager con #hyprland su un vecchio laptop e il risultato è stato fantastico, non solo mi sono ritrovato un ambiente fluido e gradevole agli occhi, ma mi sta regalando anche un piacere che avevo dimenticato, lo scoprire nuove cose. Poveri utenti windows non sapete che vi perdete
