River is a Wayland compositor written in Zig that defines a window manager protocol so that, like with X11, write your own window management software. As with X11, the protocol is language-agnostic, so you can define your window manager using any programming language at all.
I have been gradually becoming more interested in Zig as a potential replacement for C in systems programming. Rust is another interesting potential replacement.

@oxcust @survey: Yeah, but IMHO it's still a valid answer (which I ticked) because IMHO there is no real hard border between a #DesktopEnvironment and an X11 #WindowManager or #WaylandCompositor.
For me, my #i3 configuration plus my .xsession/.xinitrc is my desktop environment: https://github.com/xtaran/ratpoison-desktop (Initially written for and still works with #Ratpoison in case the screen is less than 1024 pixels wide, e.g. on some 7" screens, be it an EeePC 701 or a tiny screen for a Single Board Computer.)
