  1. When most people think of Apartheid, history of South #Africa comes to mind where people were #segregated according to colour of their skin, with White people having more rights than Black South Africans, or those of mixed race

In 21st century Israel runs an Apartheid system where Israeli #Jews have more rights than #Muslim or #Christian Palestinians

    - Even if they are #citizens of #Israel, equality they do not have. This #inequality extends into the legal system

    What can we do? ...

  2. #RESIST! #NAACP Sues #DepartmentOfEducation Over #DEI Rollbacks: Here's What To Know

The nation's oldest #CivilRights group says the Trump administration’s rollback of diversity and inclusion programs is unconstitutional and disproportionately harms #BlackStudents.

    April 19, 2025

"The NAACP is suing the U.S. Department of Education over recent efforts to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in schools. In a federal complaint filed in Washington, D.C., the organization alleges that the Department of Education’s recent directives are unconstitutional and discriminatory—particularly for Black students.

"The complaint faults the administration for targeting programs that offer '#truthful, #inclusive curricula,' as well as policies that expand access to selective educational opportunities for #BlackAmericans and foster belonging while addressing #racism in schools.

"The NAACP argues that the Department’s recent actions 'advance a misinterpretation' of federal civil rights laws and Supreme Court precedent—actions that, according to the group, violate its members’ rights to equal protection and to be free from viewpoint discrimination under the #USConstitution.

"NAACP President Derrick Johnson criticized the move, stating that the administration is 'effectively sanctioning' the very discrimination that U.S. civil rights laws were designed to prevent

" 'The Department of Education, tasked with a responsibility to protect the civil rights of all children, has instead claimed #SystemicRacism doesn’t exist — effectively sanctioning the very discrimination that our civil rights laws were designed to prevent while children of color consistently attend #segregated, chronically underfunded schools where they receive less educational opportunities and more discipline,' said Johnson."

  3. The two-part episode "Past Tense", which aired in the third season of #StarTrek: #DeepSpaceNine. In this episode, #Sisko, #Bashir, and #Dax are accidentally transported to #SanFrancisco in the year #2024, where they find a #dystopian #society where the #poor and #homeless are #segregated in walled-off #ghettos called #SanctuaryDistricts. Sisko and Bashir get trapped in one of these districts, while Dax is rescued by a wealthy businessman. Sisko realizes that they have arrived just before the Bell Riots, a violent uprising that will change the course of history and lead to social reforms. However, he also learns that the man who was supposed to lead the riots, Gabriel Bell, has been killed, and he decides to take his place to preserve the timeline.

This episode is widely regarded as one of the best and most relevant episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as it explores themes such as
#IncomeInequality, #homelessness, #SocialJustice, and #HumanRights. The episode also draws parallels between the 2020s and the 1990s, when it was produced, as well as the present day. The episode depicts a world where #technology has advanced but society has regressed, where people are divided by #class and #race, and where #violence and #oppression are rampant. The episode also shows how people can make a difference by #StandingUp for their #rights and #dignity, and how #history can be shaped by ordinary people.

  4. The #white #evangelical movement prior to 1980 was largely #supportive of #abortion #rights.

They were furious, however, when the Supreme Court #banned preacher-led #school #prayer and in the late 1970s Jimmy Carter pulled the #tax #exemptions of #segregated #schools run by white evangelicals.

Jerry #Falwell had started his “Moral Majority” in 1978 and uber-Christian Paul #Weyrich (co-founder of The Heritage Foundation and the guy who famously said, “I don’t want everybody to vote!”) signed up for the Reagan campaign.

As Donne Levy writes for George Washington University’s History News Network:

“Weyrich and Falwell realized that the tax exemption issue based on racial discrimination had limited value, but #opposing #abortion was a moral issue cutting across racial and religious lines. That was their thinking on the eve of the 1980 elections.”
