  4. PEMBROKESHIRE: The seal pup who swam 120km from Cornwall to Pembrokeshire in four days — and lived to tell the tale

The pup, affectionately named Muse by staff at RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton, was found on the rocks at St Brides Bay in Pembrokeshire on December 11 last year. RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Ellie West said she had concerns about him immediately — he was dehydrated, in thin body condition, with obvious rolls of skin that should have been filled with fat and blubber, and was passing dark loose faeces.

But it was only when Ellie noticed unusual spray marks on his back — similar to those used to identify assessed seals — that the full story emerged. The colour was different from those typically used in the area, so she contacted British Divers Marine Life Rescue. They confirmed they had checked on the same pup just four days earlier — on December 7, at Port Gaverne in north Cornwall, some 120km away.

Ellie said: “Muse’s story is such a fascinating one. When I initially assessed him, little did I know that he had travelled such a long way in such a short time.”

At the time of the Cornwall sighting, Muse had been deemed a borderline case — feisty enough to be given another chance in the wild without intervention. But in those four days he had lost more weight, developed mouth ulcers, and made his way all along the south Wales coastline to Pembrokeshire.

Ellie removed him from the beach and gave him tube feeds of electrolyte fluids and fish before transporting him to RSPCA West Hatch, where he was found to have a possible respiratory infection and was given a course of antibiotics.

What followed was a remarkable recovery. Muse self-fed throughout his entire stay at the centre — a strong sign that he was fighting to survive. By Christmas Eve he had gone from 16kg on admission to 19kg, gaining weight consistently each week.

He paired with another seal and moved to shallow outdoor pools in early January, before graduating to the main pre-release pool with 11 other seals at the end of February — competing well for his share of the fish.

Wildlife Supervisor Ryan Walker said: “He’s consistently gained weight each week over the past few months showing he can compete well with the other seals for his share of the fish.” His final recorded weight before release was 41.5kg — nearly tripling in size since he was plucked from the Pembrokeshire beach.

Muse was released at a location in Devon on Wednesday 8 April alongside five other seals rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue — all named in keeping with this year’s musicians-and-bands theme at the centre: Jimi Hendrix, Lewis Capaldi, Run DMC, Kate Nash and Oxford Comma.

Ryan said: “It was absolutely wonderful to see Muse along with the group of seals going back to where they belong. They had all been admitted either with injuries, were unwell or were underweight and we have spent the time needed to get them back to full health.”

Each seal pup rehabilitated at West Hatch costs around £1,400 a week in fish and veterinary care during seal season, which typically runs from September to March — underscoring the significant resources required to give animals like Muse a second chance.

Ryan added that Muse’s success was down to a team effort from rescuers, vets, staff, volunteers and supporters. “Their success stories are down to a real team effort — and to our supporters who generously help us so we can continue what we do,” he said.

The RSPCA is urging anyone who spots a seal on a beach to observe from a distance and not to approach — seals have a nasty bite if threatened, and dog owners are advised to keep pets on leads on beaches with seal colonies. If a pup appears distressed, injured or unwell, or is on a busy public beach and the mother has not returned after 24 hours, the RSPCA emergency line should be called.

Ellie added that in west Wales, grey seals are the most commonly seen species, and that pups with a long white coat of fur are likely still dependent on their mother. Those who have lost this fur are at the weaned stage — and are the most common casualties the RSPCA receives calls about. “Our main message is if they look in distress or unwell please call it in,” she said.

  16. Pembrokeshire wins big as record UK offshore wind auction secures Erebus in Celtic Sea

The UK Government says the auction has delivered 8.4GW of new offshore wind, enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 12 million homes. Ministers say the result puts Britain “firmly on track” for clean power by 2030 and marks a major shift away from volatile global gas markets.

Erebus — backed by Great British Energy and the National Wealth Fund — is one of the first commercial‑scale floating wind farms in the world and a flagship project for the Celtic Sea. Awel y Môr, off the coast of North Wales, also secured a contract.

The government says the round will unlock £22 billion in private investment and support around 7,000 skilled jobs across the UK, with Pembrokeshire expected to benefit from port upgrades, fabrication work and long‑term maintenance roles.

Welsh Secretary: “Huge news for Pembrokeshire”

    Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said:

Today’s announcement is huge news for Pembrokeshire and North Wales. It is a massive vote of confidence in Wales’ clean energy industry which is already delivering the well‑paid, highly‑skilled jobs of the future with the potential to bring thousands more.

These new projects in the seas off Wales will help secure our energy supply and bring down bills for good.

Offshore wind “40% cheaper than gas”, says UK Government

The government says the strike price agreed for fixed offshore wind — £90.91 per megawatt hour — is around 40% cheaper than the cost of building and running a new gas power station.

Ministers say the auction is a dramatic turnaround after the previous round failed to secure a single offshore wind project.

Energy Secretary calls result a “historic win”

    Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:

With these results, Britain is taking back control of our energy sovereignty. This is a historic win for those who want Britain to stand on our own two feet, controlling our own energy rather than depending on markets controlled by petrostates and dictators.

It is a monumental step towards clean power by 2030 and the price secured in this auction is 40% lower than the alternative cost of building and operating a new gas plant.

Clean, homegrown power is the right choice for this country to bring down bills for good and this auction will create thousands of jobs throughout Britain.

‘Vital for jobs’ says Swansea MP

Torsten Bell, MP for Swansea West, said:

“This is huge news for South West Wales, vital for jobs from Port Talbot right across to Pembrokeshire. It comes straight after the confirmation that Wylfa will house the UK’s first nuclear SMRs – two Labour government’s delivering the biggest industrial investment in North Wales for a generation.

He added that there was “clearly huge potential for Wales to enter a new era of green energy jobs/investment”.

Industry welcomes the result — but warns the job isn’t done

While the scale of the auction has been widely praised, industry figures say the sector is “relieved rather than triumphant”.

Analysts warn that rising costs, supply‑chain bottlenecks and grid delays still pose risks for future projects.

One senior renewables consultant said the auction was a “big step forward” but stressed that developers “need long‑term certainty” to keep investment flowing into the Celtic Sea.

Celtic Sea tipped as “the next big frontier”

Energy experts say the Celtic Sea could become one of the UK’s most important clean‑power hubs, with floating wind expected to expand rapidly over the next decade.

Pembrokeshire’s deep‑water port facilities, fabrication yards and existing energy infrastructure are seen as key advantages as the region positions itself at the centre of the UK’s next offshore wind boom.

The government says today’s auction marks a major step towards reducing reliance on global gas markets, which have driven up household bills in recent years.

  17. Swansea escapes Storm Goretti snow – but Wales still hit by thundersnow, travel chaos and power cuts

While South West Wales’ main urban centres saw rain instead of the heavy snow forecast, conditions elsewhere deteriorated sharply, with parts of Pembrokeshire even experiencing rare thundersnow as schools shut, rail lines suspended, mountain roads closed and hundreds of homes left without power.

Mountain routes shut as blizzards hit higher ground

The Bwlch mountain road (A4107) was closed at 7pm on Thursday after conditions became unsafe. The joint decision by Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf councils followed reports of drifting snow and falling temperatures. The route reopened shortly after 8am today.

Pembrokeshire saw some of the worst conditions, with heavy snow, sleet and strong winds creating hazardous driving on higher ground. The B4329 between Haverfordwest and Cardigan, which crosses the Preseli Hills, remained closed for long periods as blizzards hit the route.

Issues were also reported on the B4313 between Fishguard and Narberth, where drifting snow made conditions treacherous across the northern foothills.

Further south, the A478 from Clunderwen to Cardigan saw significant snow in places, with drivers warned to avoid higher ground as accumulations built up.

Council teams worked through the night to clear fallen trees, deal with surface water flooding and keep primary routes open.

Thundersnow caught on camera in Pembrokeshire

A dramatic burst of thundersnow was captured in Pembrokeshire overnight, with lightning illuminating heavy snowfall as Storm Goretti swept across the county.

Local resident Harvey Harbour filmed the moment and shared it on X, showing bright flashes lighting up the sky as snow fell across the area.

You can watch the video here:

    What is thundersnow?

Thundersnow is a rare weather phenomenon where a thunderstorm produces snow instead of rain.

It happens when a strong, unstable weather system forms above very cold air at ground level. The storm still generates lightning and thunder, but the precipitation falls as snow.

The lightning often appears brighter because it reflects off the snowflakes, while the thunder sounds quieter because the snow absorbs the sound.

Thundersnow can bring sudden heavy downpours of snow, reduced visibility and rapidly worsening road conditions.

    Rail disruption continues across Wales

Transport for Wales services remain heavily affected, with suspensions and reduced timetables on several lines following snow, ice and fallen trees.

    Routes impacted include:

    • Craven Arms to Swansea (Heart of Wales Line)
    • West of Carmarthen
    • Maesteg to Ebbw
    • Wrexham to Bidston
    • Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog

CrossCountry services between Cardiff and Birmingham are not running, and passengers are being urged to check before travelling.

Your earlier Swansea Bay News reporting highlighted “do not travel” warnings issued yesterday as rail operators shut lines ahead of the storm.

Schools shut and power cuts reported

Across Wales, at least 150 schools are closed today, with Powys, Blaenau Gwent and Wrexham among the worst affected.

Around 600 homes were without power this morning, with further outages reported in north and mid Wales. Pembrokeshire also saw power cuts around Clunderwen and Bridell, alongside burst water mains in Haverfordwest.

Emergency services across Ceredigion and Powys reported “numerous incidents” overnight, with police urging people to avoid all but essential travel.

Swansea spared – but warnings remain in force

Despite fears of thundersnow and blizzard conditions reaching Swansea Bay, the city avoided the worst of the storm, with rain and sleet falling instead of snow.

However, Amber and Yellow warnings for snow, rain and wind remain in place across much of Wales, and forecasters say conditions may continue to change through the day.

Bridgend Council said all routes in the county borough remain open after crews dealt with fallen trees and blocked drains overnight.

    What happens next

The Met Office says Storm Goretti remains a “multi‑hazard event”, with snow, strong winds and heavy rain still expected to bring disruption in parts of Wales.

Gusts of up to 70mph are forecast along the south coast, while higher ground in mid and north Wales may see further snow and ice as temperatures fluctuate.

Swansea Bay News will continue to update readers as the situation develops.
