Are there any mycologists out there that can confirm that these are puff balls and I can eat them for tea this evening? The tree they are growing on is a mature oak. They are between 40 and 60 centimetres above ground level.
The thing that most confuses me is that I'm used to seeing puff balls on the ground, not on trees, but apparently they can grow there too?

The Devil's Bridge, #Ceredigion, painted by Rev Charles Annesley in the early 1800s. The lowest of the bridges is the one in question - #folklore states it was built by You-Know-Who in a single night but ironically it was actually the work of monks - in the 12th Century! Extraordinary.
