I'm standing soaking wet in the pouring rain in Cardigan, freezing miserably – and I get kicked out of the saving grace of a pub. "You're wearing rain gear," the waitress says to me, as Zuri and I have to head back out into the icy storm.

Wales 2021 on this day means: everyone is fleeing the constant rain, every restaurant is completely booked, and there's no room for a frozen cyclist with a wet dog. After a grueling battle against the wind to Fishguard, where we practically have to wolf down my food before being shown the door again, we retreat, exhausted, to our tent. My only wish: to see Pembrokeshire in the sunshine.

And the next morning, I can't believe my eyes. The weather completely changed, revealing the incredibly beautiful coastline, endless beaches, and gigantic cliffs under a brilliant blue sky! But Wales wouldn't be Wales if it didn't throw another wrench in the works: After two hours of charging in St. Davids (the smallest city in Great Britain), I discovered that my e-bike battery hadn't charged at all. A logistical nightmare ensued, turning this perfect sunny day into a massive ordeal all the way to Pembroke, as I constantly had to stop for charging attempts.

  6. MORRISONS DAILY: Supermarket giant announces 100 convenience store closures blaming government costs — we’ve identified the south-west Wales stores that could be affected

Five convenience stores in south-west Wales could be among 100 Morrisons Daily outlets set to close across the UK — with hundreds of jobs at risk nationally and communities in Trimsaran, Pontardawe, Neyland, Pembroke and Tenby potentially facing the loss of their local shop.

Morrisons confirmed the planned closures on Friday, saying the affected stores had been loss-making for years despite attempts to turn them around — and that rising costs driven by government policy had made the situation worse.

Morrisons has not confirmed which specific stores are proposed for closure. However, using Morrisons’ own store finder, Swansea Bay News has identified five wholly-owned Morrisons Daily stores in south-west Wales — meaning they are in the pool of around 1,000 company-owned stores from which the 100 closures will be drawn:

    Morrisons Daily, Heol Morlais, Trimsaran

    Morrisons Daily, Herbert Street, Pontardawe

    Morrisons Daily, High Street, Neyland

Morrisons Daily, Upper Lamphey Road, Pembroke

    Morrisons Daily, New Hedges, Tenby

With around 1,000 wholly-owned stores nationally and 100 proposed for closure, the vast majority will remain open. Other Morrisons Daily stores in south-west Wales run by franchisees are not affected by the announcement.

All five of the local wholly-owned stores were originally part of Morrisons’ £190 million rescue purchase of the McColl’s convenience chain from administration in 2022, and subsequently rebranded as Morrisons Daily.

The 100 proposed closures represent around one in ten of Morrisons’ wholly-owned convenience estate — a significant reduction in the company’s directly operated network, even as it pursues aggressive franchise growth.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “The performance of all company owned stores across our Convenience business is subject to continuous review. This process has identified a number of stores, which were part of the McColl’s acquisition, whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss making, despite remedial action.”

The policy choices Morrisons cited include increases to employer National Insurance contributions and rises to the national living wage — both of which came into force in April and have been blamed by retailers across the UK for pushing up operating costs.

Staff at the affected stores have been told they are at risk of redundancy, with a consultation set to begin shortly. Morrisons said it would try to find alternative roles for impacted workers elsewhere in the business — in supermarket, logistics and manufacturing operations.

The store closures are just the latest in a string of asset disposals and cutbacks. In 2024, Morrisons sold all 337 of its petrol stations to Motor Fuel Group in a £2.5 billion deal — a move specifically designed to reduce the debt pile built up since the chain’s £10 billion takeover by private equity firm Clayton Dubilier and Rice. The same firm owns both Morrisons and MFG.

Despite reducing its net debt by 46% from a 2022 peak to £3.2 billion, the chain still recorded annual losses of £318 million in the year to October.

The news also comes after Morrisons announced the closure of 52 cafés and 17 convenience stores last year, and just weeks after revealing that around 200 jobs were at risk at its Bradford headquarters.

Despite the closures, Morrisons insisted its convenience business remained a growth priority. It currently runs around 1,700 Morrisons Daily stores — including roughly 700 franchise locations — and opened more than 120 new franchise stores last year.

The company said it planned to open hundreds more franchise outlets in the coming years, with the vast majority of future openings set to be franchise-operated rather than company-owned.

  12. Out running errands this morning and stumbled across a dog adoption event. Of course, I parked and played with the puppies.

Henry, though, stole my heart! He's the sweetest good boy that I've ever met. If he did better with other dogs in the house, I would have immediately signed up to take him home.

Let's get this adorable #dog a forever home. He's currently being fostered in #Pembroke, #Massachusetts...

  31. #MaineTribes and Leading #Environmental Organizations Join Forces To Oppose Proposed #Mine in Shadow of #Katahdin

Proposed #ZincMine at #PickettMountain being pursued by virtually unknown Canadian company

    June 28, 2023

"Two Tribes in Maine today joined forces with leading environmental groups and a national public interest environmental law organization to oppose a proposed mine that would be located in the shadow of #BaxterStatePark and the #KatahdinWoods & Waters National Monument.

"The proposed zinc mine at Pickett Mountain is being pursued by a virtually unknown Canadian company, #WolfdenResources, that has never operated a mine before. A previous version of Wolfden’s request was widely opposed because the region holds enormous cultural and natural significance to #Wabanaki Tribes, outdoor recreation businesses, and Maine people.

"The #HoultonBandOfMaliseets, the #PenobscotNation, and the #NaturalResourcesCouncilOfMaine [#NRCM], represented by #Earthjustice and #Brann&Isaacson, joined the #ConservationLawFoundation in petitioning to intervene in the review of Wolfden’s permit application to the Land Use Planning Commission (#LUPC) to rezone the area for #industrial uses.

"'The Penobscot Nation strongly opposes the rezoning of this #ecologically important area. We share significant concerns over impacts to the #water quality and f#isheries of the area, which our members rely upon,' said #ChiefKirkFrancis of the Penobscot Nation. 'The West Branch of the #MattawamkeagRiver contains abundant, high-quality, cold-water fish habitat and Designated #CriticalHabitat for #endangered #AtlanticSalmon, identified as necessary for the recovery of Atlantic salmon in the Penobscot River. This mine would impact our traditional territories and forever alter our ability to maintain our relationship to this place.'

"The area Wolfden wants to mine is next to three State Heritage Fish Waters and is a centerpiece of the region’s growing outdoor economy. It contains the headwaters of the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River, which is sacred to the Penobscot Nation and provides key, federally designated critical habitat for endangered Atlantic salmon.

"'The Katahdin region’s wild beauty and clean water are extraordinary. One look at this landscape demonstrates that this is no place to put a mine,' said Nick Bennett, staff scientist at the Natural Resources Council of Maine. 'Wolfden’s claims that it will treat #wastewater more effectively than any mining company on earth are not credible. This is too big a risk for #Maine.'

"'The legacy of metallic mineral #mining in Maine is one of empty promises of economic development, acid mine drainage #polluting waters and killing fish, and multi-million dollar c#leanups funded by taxpayers and not the fly-by-night mining companies like Wolfden,' said #SeanMahoney, vice-president and senior counsel at the Conservation Law Foundation. 'Rezoning this area to allow mining would fail to recognize the cultural and spiritual importance of the land to the #WabanakiTribes and threaten the natural resources and experiences valued by generations of Maine citizens.'

"After withdrawing its initial request because it was riddled with errors, Wolfden submitted a second rezoning petition in January that sparked another review by the LUPC. Comments by Wolfden’s CEO disrespecting Maine tribes and #MininLlaws have prompted outrage from the Penobscot Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, and #conservationists. The company has lost tens of millions of dollars over the past decade.

"'This is one of the absolute worst areas to rezone for a mine,' said Aaron Bloom, a senior attorney with Earthjustice. 'The region is known for its vast contiguous forest, pristine streams, high-quality lakes, and aquatic species like wild brook trout and landlocked salmon. Why would we risk that, along with the outdoor economy that depends on it, on a half-baked proposal from an unproven mining company? The Commission must put Maine’s unique natural resources, and the well-being of the people of Maine and Maine’s Wabanaki Tribes, before short-term industry profits.'

"More than 700 hundred Mainers and local businesses, including Bradford Camps, Chandler Lakes Camps and Lodge, and the #MaineWildernessGuidesOrganization, have spoken out against Wolfden’s plans. In May 2022, residents of #Pembroke voted overwhelmingly to ban industrial-scale metallic mineral mining in their town in response to Wolfden’s plans to develop a mine there."
