SWANSEA: #DogsAtPollingStations is trending — but spare a thought for the #DogsNotAtPollingStations who’d love a vote of confidence today
Across Wales today, social media is filling up with #DogsAtPollingStations – the much-loved trend where proud owners share photos of their canine companions accompanying them to vote.
But for every smiling pup pictured outside a polling station today, there’s another dog who isn’t there.
The #DogsNotAtPollingStations are the rescue dogs sitting in animal centres across Wales – many of whom have been waiting weeks, months or longer to find a new owner to one day vote alongside.
At RSPCA Cymru’s Llys Nini Branch in Swansea – based in the Senedd’s new Gŵyr Abertawe constituency – there are 11 dogs currently ready for adoption.
Many more will join them in the coming weeks once court proceedings conclude or rehabilitation programmes are completed.
The RSPCA is urging voters across Wales to consider adopting one of these dogs – so they can become part of next election’s #DogsAtPollingStations trend.
Among them is Bear, a two-year-old Chow Chow looking for what the charity describes as a loving forever home.
Bear is described by staff as a dog with “bags of character” who loves long walks and food.
The RSPCA notes that Chow Chows can have very long coats – something any potential new owner would need to consider.
Lady – based at RSPCA’s Newport centre – is a gentle and sensitive Patterdale terrier crossbreed who is looking for a calm, understanding home where she can truly blossom.
(Image: RSPCA)Across the RSPCA’s other Welsh centres, more dogs are also looking for homes.
At the charity’s Newport centre, Lady – a gentle Patterdale terrier crossbreed – is searching for a calm, understanding home.
The RSPCA describes her as a little shy when meeting new people, but says with patience and kindness her true personality shines through. She would do best as the only pet in the home.
Nine-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Reggie is looking for a new home after his owner passed away.
(Image: RSPCA)At the Bryn-Y-Maen centre in Upper Colwyn Bay, nine-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Reggie is also waiting for a new family after his previous owner passed away.
Tan and white Reggie loves to potter about outdoor spaces and is described by staff as full of love, knowing lots of commands and being a big fan of fuss and attention.
Dr Samantha Gaines from the charity’s Companion Animals Department said it was always heartwarming to see voters share photos of their dogs outside polling stations.
“With temperatures warming up, we’d always urge voters to keep their dogs nice and cool – or even consider taking them to vote in the evening depending on how hot it is outside,” she said.
She said many RSPCA centres were full to bursting. “We’d urge anyone looking to add a dog to their family to check out the RSPCA’s Find a Pet website,” she said. “You may find your paw-fect voting companion for next polling day.”
The RSPCA also published its own manifesto ahead of the 2026 Senedd election, and according to the charity’s Animal Kindness Index, Wales has the highest proportion of animal lovers of any UK nation.
Billie-Jade Thomas, Senior Public Affairs Manager at the RSPCA, said voters had welcomed hearing from political parties’ plans for animals. “We look forward to working with Wales’ 96 new Senedd Members to ensure animal welfare is a top priority,” she said.
For anyone in Swansea or across south-west Wales considering rehoming a dog, more information about Bear and the other dogs at Llys Nini is available on the Llys Nini Branch website.
Full details of all the dogs available for adoption across the RSPCA’s Welsh centres can be found on the RSPCA’s Find a Pet tool.

PEMBROKESHIRE: The seal pup who swam 120km from Cornwall to Pembrokeshire in four days — and lived to tell the tale
The pup, affectionately named Muse by staff at RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton, was found on the rocks at St Brides Bay in Pembrokeshire on December 11 last year. RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Ellie West said she had concerns about him immediately — he was dehydrated, in thin body condition, with obvious rolls of skin that should have been filled with fat and blubber, and was passing dark loose faeces.
But it was only when Ellie noticed unusual spray marks on his back — similar to those used to identify assessed seals — that the full story emerged. The colour was different from those typically used in the area, so she contacted British Divers Marine Life Rescue. They confirmed they had checked on the same pup just four days earlier — on December 7, at Port Gaverne in north Cornwall, some 120km away.
Ellie said: “Muse’s story is such a fascinating one. When I initially assessed him, little did I know that he had travelled such a long way in such a short time.”
At the time of the Cornwall sighting, Muse had been deemed a borderline case — feisty enough to be given another chance in the wild without intervention. But in those four days he had lost more weight, developed mouth ulcers, and made his way all along the south Wales coastline to Pembrokeshire.
Ellie removed him from the beach and gave him tube feeds of electrolyte fluids and fish before transporting him to RSPCA West Hatch, where he was found to have a possible respiratory infection and was given a course of antibiotics.
What followed was a remarkable recovery. Muse self-fed throughout his entire stay at the centre — a strong sign that he was fighting to survive. By Christmas Eve he had gone from 16kg on admission to 19kg, gaining weight consistently each week.

Image credit: RSPCA.He paired with another seal and moved to shallow outdoor pools in early January, before graduating to the main pre-release pool with 11 other seals at the end of February — competing well for his share of the fish.
Wildlife Supervisor Ryan Walker said: “He’s consistently gained weight each week over the past few months showing he can compete well with the other seals for his share of the fish.” His final recorded weight before release was 41.5kg — nearly tripling in size since he was plucked from the Pembrokeshire beach.
Muse was released at a location in Devon on Wednesday 8 April alongside five other seals rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue — all named in keeping with this year’s musicians-and-bands theme at the centre: Jimi Hendrix, Lewis Capaldi, Run DMC, Kate Nash and Oxford Comma.
Muse and five other seals are released in Devon on 8 April, all rehabilitated by the RSPCA and British Divers Marine Life Rescue. Image credit: RSPCA.Ryan said: “It was absolutely wonderful to see Muse along with the group of seals going back to where they belong. They had all been admitted either with injuries, were unwell or were underweight and we have spent the time needed to get them back to full health.”
Each seal pup rehabilitated at West Hatch costs around £1,400 a week in fish and veterinary care during seal season, which typically runs from September to March — underscoring the significant resources required to give animals like Muse a second chance.
Ryan added that Muse’s success was down to a team effort from rescuers, vets, staff, volunteers and supporters. “Their success stories are down to a real team effort — and to our supporters who generously help us so we can continue what we do,” he said.
Muse races into the water at the moment of his release in Devon on 8 April. Image credit: RSPCA.The RSPCA is urging anyone who spots a seal on a beach to observe from a distance and not to approach — seals have a nasty bite if threatened, and dog owners are advised to keep pets on leads on beaches with seal colonies. If a pup appears distressed, injured or unwell, or is on a busy public beach and the mother has not returned after 24 hours, the RSPCA emergency line should be called.
Ellie added that in west Wales, grey seals are the most commonly seen species, and that pups with a long white coat of fur are likely still dependent on their mother. Those who have lost this fur are at the weaned stage — and are the most common casualties the RSPCA receives calls about. “Our main message is if they look in distress or unwell please call it in,” she said.

HEARTBREAK: Swansea man banned for life after ‘threats to kill’ his own dog
52-year-old Andrew Matthews from Ravenhill was sentenced at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on February 24 after pleading guilty to two offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The “extremely lame” dog, a tan and black crossbreed named Lola, was found to be suffering from severe swelling in her front legs, with her owner admitting he hadn’t taken her to a vet in seven years.
Neighbors raised the alarm after reporting that Matthews had behaved “aggressively” towards the animal at his home last July.
Witnesses told the court they heard “smacking sounds” followed by the heartbreaking cries of a dog, with Matthews even heard making “threats to kill” the animal.
When RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Paula Milton arrived with police, she found Lola was unable to bear any weight on her right front leg due to “significant swelling” on the wrist.
The severe swelling on Lola’s front leg was “obvious” to anyone, according to vets who examined her. (Image: RSPCA)A vet who examined Lola found both her wrists were affected by degenerative joint disease, with multiple scars over her muzzle, elbow, and wrists.
X-rays showed bony changes around the dog’s right wrist joint which indicated an ongoing arthritis-related issue that would have taken “weeks to months” to reach that stage.
Despite being put on an extensive course of three different pain relief medications by the RSPCA, Lola was still unable to bear weight on her legs more than a month later.
Vets eventually made the “kindest” decision to put the dog to sleep, ruling that she would never be able to lead a life free from pain or fulfill her physical needs.
The court heard that Matthews struggled with alcoholism and was drunk at the time of the incident, with his defence stating he was remorseful for his actions.
As well as the lifetime ban, Matthews was handed a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to undertake an alcohol treatment programme and 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days.
RSPCA Inspector Gemma Cooper slammed the neglect, stating: “Poor Lola’s lameness was obvious and was prolonged, but the defendant failed to get her seen by a vet.”
Matthews was also ordered to pay court costs of £400 following the prosecution by the animal charity.
