Yes it's hot in Europe, unusually hot. But unexpectedly hot? That's a no. I studied environmental science back in the 1990s and scientists then were predicting that Europe would regularly have heatwaves in the 35-40C range by the 2020s.
We didn't stop driving petrol cars, install aircon in public buildings or stop flying away for glamorous holidays - myself included. And yet we complain. Now I help to build windfarms, built of steel and plastics that all use fossil fuels, to harness something free and turn it into electricity. It feels like baby steps whilst the house burns around me :elmo_fire:
I'm flying to Madrid on Monday, then Mallorca, then back to Glasgow via Heathrow, all powered by kerosine. At least I'm taking a bus to the airport :earth_americas:

die Aussage, dass #OffshoreWind eigentlich nachteilig (teurer in Errichtung und Betrieb) und nur wegen unzureichender Potentiale/Akzeptanz für Wind an Land im Mix ist - kein Wort von stabilerer Erzeugung! Neben der Stornierung der großen Fossilisten-Projekte und derzeit mangelndem Interesse habe ich auch weitere Negativmeldungen gelesen - Verschattung und Auswirkungen auf das Wetter im küstennahen Land.
Die Flächenausweisung von Wind an Land wurde ja unter Habeck angeschoben, nur die Ausschreibungsmenge klemmt gerade - vielleicht brauchen wir weniger Wind auf See als angepeilt?

#Datacentre off #Shanghai coast is submerged 10m below the surface of the water and is powered by nearby #offshorewind and uses between 25% and 40% less electricity.
China was not the first country to experiment with building datacentres underwater to make them more efficient. In 2018, #Microsoft launched a pilot in the waters around Orkney in Scotland

@paka Offshore wind farms are how I earn my wages. The challenge with all tidal turbines is that anything in the sea gets covered with marine life with limits as a result to efficiency. Tidal turbine schemes such as Orbital, MeyGen, Hydrowing etc are just on the brink of realising commercial-scale deployment but a long way yet from making significant contributions to the grid.
Offshore wind farms, which are mostly above sea level technology with only foundations below the water-line, have a longer lifespan and a more reliable return on a very significant financial investment. Hopefully in future such new technology will be tried and tested and maybe even commercially viable co-location options, unfortunately I couldn't read the article in The National without subscribing.
