  1. Llongyfarchiadau Caerffili!

#PlaidCymru has decisively won the #Caerphilly #Senedd by-election, with 47.4% of votes. It's a 27% swing from #WelshLabour and 11% margin over #ReformUK. The collapse of Welsh #Labour in its heartland is devastating, as is the wipeout of the #WelshConservatives.

Plaid is confurmed as the leading force to oust the disgraced so-called "Labour Party" in #Senedd26, and Labour has lost its majority in the Senedd.

100 years of Labour dominance in #Wales #Cymru is over

  2. #PlaidCymru’s victory in #Caerphilly points to a new kind of electorate | Welsh #politics | The Guardian

I’m glad to see that the people of Caerphilly rejected #DeformUK and instead voted for a progressive party instead.

  3. Our very own Mr Caerphilly. Here for the people of Caerphilly, fighting to keep Reform out.

  4. 50.4% turnout, blimey.

Some optimistic noises coming from Plaid, especially around youth turnout.

I'm still predicting disaster, but if it's one in which voters abandon my party for Plaid while rejecting Reform, I'd be content with it being a disaster merely for my party rather than for my country.

  5. Despite a massive electronic billboard in #Caerphilly declaring that “only Labour can stop Reform,” voters overwhelmingly threw their support behind #Plaid Although many framed the contest as a two-way battle between Labour and Reform – a potential preview of the next General Election – the public rejected BOTH the government’s message AND Reform’s toxic politics.

  7. in April 2017, Her Majesty's Opposition, the UK Labour Party, was polling around 26% under Jeremy #Corbyn, down from 31% when he took over party leadership in Feb 2016.

Corbyn's socialist policy platform was despised by the corporate class as representing a direct threat to their plutocratic stranglehold on power. So the UK press have a spent year alternating between ignoring and attacking Corbyn. Yet over that period #LabourUK membership ballooned, rising from around 200,000 to over 500,000, making it the largest political party in western Europe, as an increasing number of regular voters discovered via social media that Corbyn was in fact not owned by corporate lobbyists.

So by April 2017, much of the media are waging a relentless campaign to oust Corbyn as leader, interrupting his attempts to address policy matters with variations on "when will you step down?".

Now, fast-forward to today. Under Keir #Starmer, UK Labour are polling at an average of merely 20%, with one poll this week putting them on 15% and even behind the #Greens for the first time ever. In Thursday's #Caerphilly by-election for #Senedd (Welsh Parliament) in a seat Labour has held for a century and which it most recently won on 45%, Labour managed only 11%.

Where are the media calls for Starmer's resignation?

  11. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Deindustrialisation lead to massive job looses and loose of some identity, in a lot of Welsh towns like Caerphilly. Neoliberalism followed by Austerity, falling living standards and rising landlordism has since been hollowing out these towns. Listening to some of these reform votes I get the impression that they would be making Communist arguments and correctly blaming the bourgeoisie instead of migrants.
There are other Reform voters who are just racist or facebook-brain-broken like the reform campaigner interviewed earlier in this clip,, however there are reform voters who, perhaps, would be susceptible to a class analysis, if one was made to them. :marx: :gay_communism:

  13. When (if) NZ Labour wakes from their slumber, they might well take a lesson from last week's Caerphilly by-election in Wales. The seat has been a Labour stronghold for over 100 years. But like a dog with a stick, Starmer is chasing the Overton window, determined to compete with Farage. A right-of-centre Labour didn't sit well with core voters.

Plaid Cymru won with 47%, Farage's Reform numpties came second and Labour only picked up 11% of the vote. They came third in a formerly 100% safe Labour seat.

NZ Labour's own figures show their proposed CGT will only bring in $700m per year. Frankly that's pathetic. I'm sure NZ's billionaire class are already shaking in their boots.

The problem is not just Hipkins' lack of vision or ambition. The Labour Party's general malaise does not inspire confidence. It's time Kieran McAnulty made a run for the leadership because NZ deserves a Labour leader with fire in their belly. The timid centrist who's afraid of upsetting the status quo will not win the next election.

He gives a non answer and provides an example of what his NHS had been doing..

    Despicable

  16. The "They got the second most votes, so we should still take them very seriously and cater to what they want" takes r.e. Reform losing in #Caerphilly are extremely annoying, especially when you consider that Farage and his ilk have spent the last decade constantly saying the exact opposite.

  17. #caerphilly #lafour #cymraeg #welsh #labour Yes a blow, much re-appraisal needed but be careful, lots of Tory / Fascist spin and some appalling use of statistics. Drill down into the data, much closer than the propaganda would have you believe. ✊ #solidarity #resist

  18. One key lesson from the Caerphilly by-election is (or at least should be) that ReformUK can be defeated not by adopting some of its policies in an attempt to strip away their support via imitation, but by forthright opposition for what they stand for (and by an associated recognition that tactical voting in a FPTP system is the best current inoculation against the Right in elections).

    Will Labour learn that lesson?
    Seems unlikely!

  19. tiny detail on the guardian cartoon led me to this

Farage has said he was "stunned" his party's former leader in Wales took bribes to make statements in favour of #Russia while a Member of the European Parliament.
Nathan Gill, pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery between 6 December 2018 and 18 July 2019.
Farage said: "I didn't know anything about it, all I knew was that he'd been to #Ukraine."

  22. Gosh.

Resounding victory for Plaid on 47.4% to Reform's 36%. Labour crushed on a mere 11%, and Tories down to 2%.

Bitter pill to swallow seeing us lose Hefin's seat, but Reform represents an existential threat to our democracy and I am very glad that Plaid prevented them from taking it.
