  1. On this week’s Full Scottish, Brian Liddy and guest, Huw Marshall from Talking Wales discuss the weeks top Scottish and international news, including Ukraine, Gaza, Caerphilly, Labour Deputy Leader and Press Freedom.

  2. in April 2017, Her Majesty's Opposition, the UK Labour Party, was polling around 26% under Jeremy #Corbyn, down from 31% when he took over party leadership in Feb 2016.

Corbyn's socialist policy platform was despised by the corporate class as representing a direct threat to their plutocratic stranglehold on power. So the UK press have a spent year alternating between ignoring and attacking Corbyn. Yet over that period #LabourUK membership ballooned, rising from around 200,000 to over 500,000, making it the largest political party in western Europe, as an increasing number of regular voters discovered via social media that Corbyn was in fact not owned by corporate lobbyists.

So by April 2017, much of the media are waging a relentless campaign to oust Corbyn as leader, interrupting his attempts to address policy matters with variations on "when will you step down?".

Now, fast-forward to today. Under Keir #Starmer, UK Labour are polling at an average of merely 20%, with one poll this week putting them on 15% and even behind the #Greens for the first time ever. In Thursday's #Caerphilly by-election for #Senedd (Welsh Parliament) in a seat Labour has held for a century and which it most recently won on 45%, Labour managed only 11%.

Where are the media calls for Starmer's resignation?

  3. Despite a massive electronic billboard in #Caerphilly declaring that “only Labour can stop Reform,” voters overwhelmingly threw their support behind #Plaid Although many framed the contest as a two-way battle between Labour and Reform – a potential preview of the next General Election – the public rejected BOTH the government’s message AND Reform’s toxic politics.

  5. #PlaidCymru’s victory in #Caerphilly points to a new kind of electorate | Welsh #politics | The Guardian

I’m glad to see that the people of Caerphilly rejected #DeformUK and instead voted for a progressive party instead.

  6. Llongyfarchiadau Caerffili!

#PlaidCymru has decisively won the #Caerphilly #Senedd by-election, with 47.4% of votes. It's a 27% swing from #WelshLabour and 11% margin over #ReformUK. The collapse of Welsh #Labour in its heartland is devastating, as is the wipeout of the #WelshConservatives.

Plaid is confurmed as the leading force to oust the disgraced so-called "Labour Party" in #Senedd26, and Labour has lost its majority in the Senedd.

  7. 50.4% turnout, blimey.

Some optimistic noises coming from Plaid, especially around youth turnout.

I'm still predicting disaster, but if it's one in which voters abandon my party for Plaid while rejecting Reform, I'd be content with it being a disaster merely for my party rather than for my country.
