Thanks to Telekom #Malaysia screwing up again, the #reticulum transport has been down since yesterday.

I'm now forced to host the gateway on a foreign #megacorp VPS and VPN back to my servers. TM is the effective state monopoly internet provider, and it is practically impossible/illegal for the average citizen to #selfhost anything.

This from a country that beats its chest on how it's building the world's datacenters.

Damage to American small (and medium) businesses. Not the megacorps.

The dude with the mall kiosk selling phone cases and chargers? He's getting reamed by this, and will likely go out of business, because he brings all his stock in from China in small shipments that have always fallen under the de minimis exemption (which is now toast). He can't compete with having to pay five times as much for shipping and tariffs all of a sudden.

The independent phone-and-laptop repair place? He and his 3 techs are probably twiddling their thumbs a lot soon. Most of the parts they buy to fix your broken screen or charge port come in just like the mall kiosk dude's. A replacement screen that used to cost him $30 plus $5 shipping now suddenly costs $30 plus $15 tariffs plus $20 shipping-and-tariff-collection-and-remittance-and-brokerage-clearance charges. He'll have to double what he charges to replace that screen in your Samsung.

Amazon? Walmart? Best Buy? All the other corporate behemoths? They're not importing in dribs and drabs by post. It won't affect them much at all, except they'll probably increase prices a bit to cover the extra paperwork to clear their shipments at the border, plus a lot more to cover the tariffs.

(Yes, you already knew this. I just wanted to say it.)

You can run a moderately degraded (4bit or 8bit instead of native) Llama3-8b on a top of the line gaming rig, or a $800 ATX.

Just talked to a longtime (30yrs??) "face" of Shaw Community TV in #PortAlberni and Vancouver Island. ROGERS, after absorbing Shaw, eliminated her position and brought to an end 50 years of locally produced television and media in this City and the entire West Coast Vancouver Island region. The local office had plans for expansion... but now it's gone.

I hate the fact that #megacorp services like #GMail and #Microsoft #Outlook.com are blocking whole #email servers because of some spam emails.

Instead of fighting #spam by sharpening their filters they fight the infrastructure by blocking more and more small email servers.

This is killing email #federation.

And now, #Mastodon instance admins are blocking mastodon.social that serves as an important entry point to the #fediverse, killing Mastodon instead of fighting the spam accounts.
