Największe kontrowersje budzą obecnie okulary produkowane przez firmę Meta we współpracy z marką EssilorLuxottica (Ray-Ban), które odpowiadają za ponad 80 procent rynku. Filmy te trafiają następnie do sieci, często stając się obiektem drwin i hejtu. Ofiary mają ograniczone pole manewru prawnego, ponieważ nagrywanie w przestrzeni publicznej jest w wielu krajach w pełni legalne.

Osobnym problemem jest wykorzystywanie okularów w przestrzeniach prywatnych. Głośnym echem odbiła się sprawa influencerki Aniessy Navarro, która podczas zabiegu depilacji woskiem zorientowała się, że kosmetyczka ma na nosie inteligentne okulary Mety. Choć pracownica zarzekała się, że urządzenie jest rozładowane, a ona nosi je wyłącznie dla szkieł korekcyjnych, sytuacja wywołała powszechne oburzenie.

Eksperci prawni i badacze AI ostrzegają, że masowe upowszechnienie okularów z kamerami uniemożliwi egzekwowanie zakazów fotografowania w miejscach takich jak szpitale, sądy czy kina. David Harris, były badacz AI w firmie Meta, uważa, że obecna generacja inteligentnych okularów nieuchronnie zderzy się z tymi samymi problemami społecznymi, które ponad dekadę temu pogrzebały projekt Google Glass.
