Kubernetes (and k3s) is a damn headache.

So many moving parts and pitfalls.
So easy and quick to seriously mess up.
So difficult and time-consuming to repair.

Thousands of hours of my life spent babying a kubernetes homelab. Little actual usefulness produced. I don't want this kind of life.
Instead I want to put less time and effort towards tending digital infra, and more time towards organizing community around that digital infra; so our communities can move away from big tech.

Do y'all have suggestions for FLOSS k3s alternatives?

For my use case, it needs to:
- run distributed on a cluster of old linux computers
- run linux containers
- be able to schedule workloads to specific nodes, and reschedule if the node drops off
- be resilient to nodes dropping off and rejoining (both cluster, apps and databases should be fine)
- have deterministic configuration / use git as a source of truth for cluster config and app config. I like the nix method (compute derivation in isolation, only deploy if it will work, immutable) better than the ansible method (commit changes directly to the live system, try to roll back if something breaks. Mutable)
- be easier than k3s
- be more resilient to cluster admin screwups than k3s

Nice to have:
- self-healing
- simple disaster recovery
- geo-distribution
- delay-tolerance
- tolerance towards low inter-node bandwidth
- ability to use transport-agnostic p2p networking (like reticulum)

Отличное программное обеспечение для #mesh #p2p , но в моём случае всё работает не очень стабильно, подозреваю, что дело в совместимости с железом, OS, или что то вроде этого. Очень функциональный и перспективный универсальный проект, кажется ему немного не хватает зрелости и это исправимо , по этому слежу за каждым обновлением.

Stupid or genius: Because radio frequencies are heavily regulated, why not use sound waves above human hearing range for wireless communications? Consumer sound interfaces go up to 192 kilohertz, providing 20-96 kHz inaudible transmission band. Software like #GGwave exists.
Transmitting high-power radio waves is usually illegal. But what about ultrasound?. Could we run a mesh network like #reticulum over audio?

Habe einen karoo ii (glaub). Was wäre 3. Generation?
- Akkulaufzeit: Ohne Nabendyno wäre ich aufgeschmissen. Bin wenig begeistert.
- sideload von Android apps: geht tatsächlich brauchbar. Aber ich habe nur Dinge im Hintergrund laufen gehabt (zB phonetrack). Bringt aber nix, weil per BT unterwegs kein Internet zur Verfügung steht. Nur das proprietäre live tracking funktioniert. nächster test diesbezüglich wird mit #columba #reticulum gemacht ;))
- bei einem BRM1000 bei bis zu 38 Grad hat das Displayglas sich angefangen an den Rändern zu lösen. Bekomme jetzt - immerhin - nach 2 Jahren ein ersatztgerät.
- 100% cloud Abhängigkeit! _Kein_ upload eines gpx files via Bluetooth

Fazit: Android machts recht offen. Ach ja und die Kartendarstellung ist verglichen mit anderen super. Sogar Trinkwasser ist mitunter verzeichnet.

Heute wäre mein nächstes Testgerät ein Coros Dura. Weil der Stromhunger nervt auf Dauer.

@benjamin ie. lora is fun but by no mean it is consubstantial to RNS. #lora is a cool toy for nerds (that can quickly turn into an obsession...), and many may be used to meshtasticore that is lora-only.

here with #reticulum, lora is _one of the many ways to be connected_. one of the many radios even.

check modem73 as a cool free/libre modem software capable of using about _any_ #radio frequency.

lora doesn't cut it for you? maybe escalate to UHF, VHF, HF, FM, or some weird 6MHz ISM...

(NB: i write this regardless of what regulation applies where, yadda yadda...)

@benjamin By all means the course of action i recommend for experimenting is:

1/ Install nomadnet (pipx install nomadnet), that comes with the entire RNS stack and tools, by #reticulum author (or meshchatX if you're into graphical interfaces, vibe-coded and impressive...)

2/ add a "local interface" and start playing with devices sharing the same ethernet/wifi network;

3/ add a "tcp server interface" (pick one from https://directory.rns.recipes/) and check what it looks like when internet is up ;)

4/ add a "rnode interface" when you have a lora device turned into an rnode, deactivate the other interfaces and get into radio (once you got the concepts of RNS).

@benjamin so far my recommendations are:

- HeltecV4 for its versatility (ESP32, so wifi, bluetooth, a screen, an embedded solar and cahrge controller)

- Seeed Studio Xiao (nRF52) + Wio, cheap-as-can be and super-frugal power wise

- RAK Wisblock 19007+4631 (also nRF52 so lower than ESP32 in power use) apparently more reliable and super-hackable with many onboard extensions available (PoE, 1W LoRa, microSDcard reader, 32MB flash, etc, etc.)

In all cases: pick a decent antenna.

Ask me more about solar enclosures. :)

My technical skills are not so high and "The Mesh Networking Handbook" (ISBN 979-8253846810) written by Zachary A. Perlman could help me a lot.
I didnt use Amazon d'or several years and wouldn't like to have to.
Could you please tell me about a way to buy it somewhere else, on th net or in a library ?

Got my first LoRa "local" network up and running with Ratspeak on my Mac and T-Lora Pager and NomadNet on my fixed access station.

Not enough nodes yet to connect to the Chicago network via LoRa alone, but it its enough to give LoRa-only devices access to NomadNet at my home and office.
