When I was young, I wanted the truth passionately.

I read all the books.

I listened to all the teachers.

I really tried to meditate.

I tried to forgive, though it was traditional forgiveness rather than ACIM forgiveness.

I had tried hard to become peaceful.

Ha!

Sometimes I even became quite good at the practice.

Then pride would enter the field and ravage everything.

It was not real yet.

I was too busy being young.

Too hungry.

Too frightened.

Too unhappy.

Too caught in the body, the world, sex, food, ambition, approval, and the endless hope that something or someone outside me would finally make life feel complete.

Preferably by Friday.

Unbeknownst to me, I was trying to get out of life before I had properly lived it.

That was a mistake.

Young people are not supposed to spend all their time trying to escape the world.

They should be f**king each other.

Making new art.

Creating new music.

Building new things.

Making old mistakes.

Loving badly, then better.

Getting their hearts broken.

Buying furniture that they already know they will regret.

Learning what matters by wasting enormous amounts of time on what does not.

That is practically the entire curriculum.

The practice came later for me.

Much later.

Not because I finally became spiritually special.

Because I finally became ready.

The body changed.

Appetite changed.

The need to be someone began to loosen its grip.

Life had already had its way with me.

Repeatedly.

Profoundly.

Without asking anybody’s permission.

And now, near the end of this life, looking toward the exit does not feel dramatic or sad.

There is no white robe.

No celestial choir.

No soft lighting.

It feels simple.

I am already halfway there.

I may as well breathe consciously and enjoy the view.

FROM THE NECK UP💎

For more than forty years, A Course in Miracles remained a beautiful spiritual book.

I loved it, respected it, quoted it, and returned to it again and again.

But I could not enter its deeper meaning: Atonement.

The words felt true, but they remained words.

Forgiveness.

Peace.

The body is not the Self.

I need do nothing.

It all sounded right, but I was living almost entirely in my head.

The body was something I dragged around while pursuing spiritual understanding and enlightenment.

Then fasting changed my relationship with it.

Breathwork took me inside it.

Reflective writing showed me what the mind was doing while pretending to be wise.

Gradually, I discovered I actually had a body.

Quite a surprise after decades of unconsciously owning one.

The Course had not failed me.

I had been trying to understand it from the neck up.

Once the body became lived in rather than merely discussed, the teachings settled into place.

“I need do nothing” stopped sounding like a spiritual instruction.

It became something the body recognised.

Forgiveness stopped being moral effort.

It became the release of the argument carried in the nerves, breath, muscles, and story.

Peace was no longer an idea I agreed with.

It was what remained when I stopped feeding conflict.

The body did not become more spiritually important.

It became honest.

It showed me where fear lived, resistance tightened, thought became pain, and one conscious breath could interrupt the performance.

Reflective writing helped too.

On the page, I could see when I was explaining peace rather than living it.

I could see the little spiritual expert arranging the furniture while the house was still on fire.

That was useful.

Forty years after first opening the Course, I understood why I had not been able to enter it.

I had treated ACIM as a book about escaping the body.

It became alive when I stopped escaping the body and began listening through it.

Fasting cleared some heaviness.

Breathwork quietened the argument.

Writing made the evasions visible.

Then the Course was no longer sitting on the shelf waiting to be understood.

It was happening in the breath.

In the pause before reaction.

In the refusal to make conflict real.

In the ordinary discovery that peace need not be produced.

It was already there.

The book had not changed.

The reader had finally arrived.

But I could not enter its deeper meaning: Atonement.

The words felt true, but they remained words.

Forgiveness.

Peace.

The body is not the Self.

I need do nothing.

It all sounded right, but I was living almost entirely in my head.

The body was something I dragged around while pursuing spiritual understanding and enlightenment.

Then fasting changed my relationship with it.

Breathwork took me inside it.

Reflective writing showed me what the mind was doing while pretending to be wise.

Gradually, I discovered I actually had a body.

Quite a surprise after decades of unconsciously owning one.

The Course had not failed me.

I had been trying to understand it from the neck up.

Once the body became lived in rather than merely discussed, the teachings settled into place.

“I need do nothing” stopped sounding like a spiritual instruction.

It became something the body recognised.

Forgiveness stopped being moral effort.

It became the release of the argument carried in the nerves, breath, muscles, and story.

Peace was no longer an idea I agreed with.

It was what remained when I stopped feeding conflict.

The body did not become more spiritually important.

It became honest.

It showed me where fear lived, resistance tightened, thought became pain, and one conscious breath could interrupt the performance.

Reflective writing helped too.

On the page, I could see when I was explaining peace rather than living it.

I could see the little spiritual expert arranging the furniture while the house was still on fire.

That was useful.

Forty years after first opening the Course, I understood why I had not been able to enter it.

I had treated ACIM as a book about escaping the body.

It became alive when I stopped escaping the body and began listening through it.

Fasting cleared some heaviness.

Breathwork quietened the argument.

Writing made the evasions visible.

Then the Course was no longer sitting on the shelf waiting to be understood.

It was happening in the breath.

In the pause before reaction.

In the refusal to make conflict real.

In the ordinary discovery that peace need not be produced.

It was already there.

The book had not changed.

The reader had finally arrived.

Not ordinary breathing.

The body already manages that without requiring a committee meeting.

Conscious breathing.

The deliberate act of bringing attention into the body and remaining with the breath long enough for the noise to lose its authority.

A slow, full in-breath.

A long, unhurried out-breath.

Then another.

Nothing mystical has to happen.

There need be no visions, revelations, sacred music, or sudden purchase of white linen.

The breath does not have to produce bliss, wisdom, or a more impressive human being.

It asks only for attention.

In that way, conscious breathing has something of I need do nothing in it.

Not passivity.

Not collapse.

Not giving up.

Simply the end of interference.

The breath is already moving.

Life is already happening.

The body is already here.

For a few moments, nothing has to be improved, solved, defended, explained, or spiritually upgraded.

When the body is cold, tight, tired, painful, or restless, there is the breath.

When the mind begins manufacturing a grievance, rehearsing an argument, predicting disaster, or reopening a case that was never going to court, there is the breath.

When nothing is wrong, there is the breath then too.

That may be the most important part.

Breathwork is not merely an emergency service called when the building is on fire.

It can become the place one lives from.

Over time, conscious breath creates a space where striving begins to look unnecessary.

No philosophy is required.

No spiritual costume.

No certificate.

No audience.

No carefully arranged photograph beside a candle with a caption about surrender.

Just the body as it is.

Just the breath as it moves.

Just the next slow in-breath and the next long out-breath.

The mind may continue talking for a while.

It usually does.

It has concerns.

It has evidence.

It has brought supporting documents.

But conscious breathing does not argue with the mind.

It simply stops giving it the whole room.

Thought becomes background weather.

The body softens where it can.

Time becomes less urgent.

The need to control the moment begins to loosen.

This is where breathwork and forgiveness begin to resemble one another.

Neither changes what is real.

Neither fights the appearance.

Neither demands that the world behave properly before peace is allowed.

They remove some of the interference.

The cold remains.

The ageing body remains.

The noise remains.

The ordinary morning remains.

Nothing needs to be excluded.

Sanctuary does not mean hiding from experience.

It means finding the place within experience where the fight can stop.

The world can keep shouting.

The door has been found.

It opens inward.

The Last Exchange: A Mythic Parable

After months of grueling war, the Gavaun leaders welcomed the Oshkin leaders to their tent to entertain conversations of peace. Hearts among the two nations were as hard as could be, and no civilian expected that this would be the moment that would curve things in a better direction.

As the Oshkin leaders approached the entrance, the Gavaun soldiers at the door demanded that they surrender all their belongings. Though insulted by these demands, the Oshkin reluctantly submitted to the rules. They removed their priceless rings and sacred necklaces, emptied their pockets into the hands of the smirking soldiers, and entered the tent. With the Oshkin out of sight, the soldiers chuckled and threw the objects into the trash. 

As you can imagine, peace was not found that day.

Months went by, and the tides of war shifted. It was now the Oshkin that welcomed the Gavaun leaders to their tent to discuss the possibilities of peace. As the Gavaun approached the tent door, they were met by Oshkin soldiers demanding that they surrender all of their belongings before entering. The faces of the Gavaun fell. They had heard the stories of what their soldiers had done. At the time, they had even gotten a laugh out of it. But now they knew their retribution had come. They sighed heavily and removed their priceless rings and sacred necklaces, and emptied their pockets into their enemies’ hands. 

Hours later, the Gavaun leaders left the tent quickly, their pace fueled by their anger. As they reached the gate, they heard one of the soldiers call out for them. “Sirs! Your belongings?”

The Gavauns stopped in their tracks. Surely this was a trick. Would they not be mocked when they turned around? They whispered to each other for a moment, and then one of them turned around and walked up to the soldier. He quickly grabbed their things from the soldier’s hand, and then they swiftly made their exit.

Peace was not found that day either.

Months went by, and the tides of war shifted once again. As the Oshkin approached the gate, they were surprised to find the Gavaun leaders outside the tent, one of them standing in front of a table holding what appeared to be a wrapped gift.

“You were humane with us when we were inhumane with you,” said the leader. “We cannot recover your priceless rings and your sacred necklaces, nor the items you kept in your pockets. While we do not know if peace will be found today, we would like to offer you this gift to make reparations for our behavior.”

The Gavaun pulled the bow as the box walls fell over to reveal an ornate sand timer.

“The sand timer is one of the greatest symbols among the Gavaun people, and this one was carved by our most acclaimed craftsman. Our most sacred lessons and stories are tied to this symbol, and it carries many meanings. In this case, it represents our desire to turn back time to better honor your first visit. But just as time moves forward no matter how you turn the timer, so can we only do our best to do better with the time ahead of us.”

As you can imagine, hearts began to soften. But peace was not found that day.

As the months went by, the tides of war shifted, and the Gavaun came to discuss peace at the Oshkin tent. The Oshkin leaders were found outside their tent, one of them standing behind a table holding a cylindrical box. The leader confessed that the Gavaun’s previous gift should have softened their hearts more than it did and that peace should have been found sooner. They now wished to reciprocate by giving a gift of their own. As the Oshkin began to slowly pull the tall cylindrical top off the gift, the brightest, golden glow you could ever imagine blinded the eyes of all who looked upon it. The solid orb that was revealed must have been made of the most refined gold in the world.

Peace was found that day. 

Peace Day became a holiday, and a new tradition was established. Every year, the Gavauns and the Oshkins would gather for a new kind of war: a “gift-off,” I suppose you might call it. Each nation would present a gift to the other to see whose might be better. It became an intriguing display of craftsmanship and culture, as each nation would explain the significance of what they had offered the other. 

This tradition continued for about a century, until one particular exchange between an Oshkin man and a Gavaun woman brought it to a sudden end. The man and the woman unveiled their nation’s gift at the same time, revealing the exact same gift: a large crystal glass with a small amount of gleaming white wine at the bottom. Both the glass and the liquid shone in the sun as all who gathered for the exchange looked at it with mouths agape. Neither nation had to explain the gift, for both realized in that moment that they had the same story. No greater gift could have possibly been given, and for that reason, the tradition no longer needed to continue.

“Do you hear that?” the woman said to the man.

The man looked around, listening closely, but heard nothing. He shook his head.

“It’s as though the beat of every sacred song ever written is contained in that cup.”
